This monograph presents a fresh and detailed treatment of the problems posed by the Nehemiah-Memoir. Starting from the pre-critical interpretations of Ezra-Neh, the study demonstrates that the use of the first-person does not suffice as a criterion for distinguishing between the verba Neemiae and the additions of later authors. The earliest edition of the Memoir isconfined to a building report, which was expanded as early generations of readers developed the implications of Nehemiah's accomplishments for the consolidation and centralization of Judah. The expansions occasioned in turn the composition of the history of the 'Restoration' in Ezra-Neh. Abridged edition of a Dr. theol. dissertation completed at the Georg-August-University of Göttingen, 2003. Jacob L. Wright is now lecturer at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, Germany.

"Hegel's Lectures on Aesthetics present a systematic and historical overview of the nature and development of art in light of its meaning and philosophical significance. This book considers Hegel's aesthetics from a variety of perspectives. With an introduction by William Maker, the individual essays address Hegel's treatment of music, painting, comedy, and architecture, as well as his earlier writings on art, his relations to Schiller and to Schlegel, his treatment of romanticism, the place of aesthetics in the system, and his controversial claims about the overcoming of art. Several perspectives focus specifically on the contemporary relevance of Hegel's aesthetics in light of developments in art since his time, and especially in connection with modernism, postmodernism, and deconstruction."--Jacket

The Book of Job has held a central role in defining the project of modernity from the age of Enlightenment until today. Why has Job's response to disaster become a touchstone for modern reflections on catastrophic events? This volume engages this question and offers new perspectives on the tragic bent of the Book of Job, on its dramatic irony, on Job's position as mourner, and the unique representation of the Joban body in pain.

An expanded edition of the standard work in the field. Simon Critchley's The Ethics of Deconstruction, was originally published to great acclaim in 1992. It was his first book and the first to argue for the ethical turn in Derrida's work and to show as powerfully as possible how deconstruction has persuasive ethical consequences that are vital to our thinking through of questions of politics and democracy. Rather than being concerned with deconstruction in terms of the contradictions inherent in any text, an approach typical of the early Derrida and those in literary criticism aiming to extract a critical method for an application to literature, Critchley concerns himself with the philosophical context necessary for an understanding of deconstruction. Far from being some sort of value-free nihilism or textual free-play, Critchley showed the ethical demand that was driving Derrida's work. His claim was that Derrida's understanding of ethics has to be understood in relation to his lifelong engagement with the work of Emmanuel Levinas and the book lays out the fascinating details of their philosophical confrontation. A second expanded edition was published in 1999 by Edinburgh University Press. This third edition contains three new texts, and a new preface where Critchley reflects upon the origins, motivation and reception of The Ethics of Deconstruction.--Back cover

What Is an Image? raises the stakes for writing in art history, visual studies, art theory, and art criticism by questioning one of the most fundamental terms of all, the image or picture. This innovative collection gathers some of the most influential historians and theorists working on images to discuss what the visual has come to mean. Topics include concepts such as image and picture in the West and outside it; the reception and rejection of semiotics; the question of what is outside the image; the question of whether images have a distinct nature or are products of discourse, like language; the relationship between images and religious meanings; and the study of non-art images in medicine, science, and technology. Among the major writers represented in this book are Gottfried Boehm, Michael Ann Holly, Jacqueline Lichtenstein, W. J. T. Mitchell, Marie-Jos ̌Mondzain, Keith Moxey, Parul Dave Mukherji, Wolfram Pichler, Alex Potts, and Adrian Rifkin
