    Trotz seines geringen Umfangs und des aporetischen Endes ist Platons Hippias minor beachtenswert, da er von wichtigen Themen handelt, und zwar von der Lüge, ihrer Beziehung zu Unrechttun und von der schwierigen Frage nach der freiwilligen und unfreiwilligen Handlung. Darüber hinaus bietet der zentrale Abschnitt des Dialogs eine ausgedehnte Homerinterpretation, die einen Vergleich zwischen den homerischen Helden Achilles und Odysseus in der Ilias zum Inhalt hat und das frühe Interesse Platons an der Dichtung beweist. Ziel der vorliegenden Ausgabe ist, eine neue kritische Edition des griechischen Texts mit italienischer Übersetzung anzubieten, im Zusammenhang mit einer allgemeinen Einleitung und einem vollständigen lemmatischen Kommentar, der den Dialog in jeder Hinsicht ausführlich erläutert. In spite of its brevity and its aporetical ending, Plato’s Hippias minor is worth considering, for it deals with relevant questions such as falsehood, its relationship to wrongdoing and the more complex problem of voluntary and involuntary action. Moreover, the central section of the dialogue is devoted to the exegesis of the Homeric poems and in particular of the Iliad, developing a comparison between Achilles and Odysseus and thus offering important evidence of Plato’s early interest in poetic production. The aim of the present work is to give a new critical edition of the Greek text with Italian translation, preceded by a general introduction and followed by a continuous lemmatic commentary in order to provide a systematic analysis of the dialogue in every aspect.

    The Philology of Life retraces the outlines of the philological project developed by Walter Benjamin in his early essays on Hölderlin, the Romantics, and Goethe. This philological program, McLaughlin shows, provides the methodological key to Benjamin’s work as a whole. According to Benjamin, German literary history in the period roughly following the first World War was part of a wider “crisis of historical experience”—a life crisis to which Lebensphilosophie (philosophy of life) had instructively but insufficiently responded. Benjamin’s literary critical struggle during these years consisted in developing a philology of literary historical experience and of life that is rooted in an encounter with a written image.The fundamental importance of this “philological” method in Benjamin’s work seems not to have been recognized by his contemporary readers, including Theodor Adorno who considered the approach to be lacking in dialectical rigor. This facet of Benjamin’s work was also elided in the postwar publications of his writings, both in German and English. In recent decades, the publication of a wider range of Benjamin’s writings has made it possible to retrace the outlines of a distinctive philological project that starts to develop in his early literary criticism and that extends into the late studies of Baudelaire and Paris. By bringing this innovative method to light this study proposes “the philology of life” as the key to the critical program of one of the most influential intellectual figures in the humanities

The muscular precision of images that mark Pound’s translations helped establish a modern style for American literature, at the same time creating a thirst for classical Chinese poetry in English. Pound’s dynamic free-verse translations in a modern idiom formed the basis for T.S. Eliot’s famous claim that Pound was the "inventor of Chinese poetry for our time." Yet Pound achieved this feat without knowing any Chinese, relying instead on word-for-word "cribs" left by the Orientalist Ernest Fenollosa, whose notebooks reveal a remarkable story of sustained cultural exchange.This fully annotated critical edition focuses on Pound’s astonishing translations without forgetting that the original Chinese poems are masterpieces in their own right. On the one hand, the presentation of all that went into the final Cathay makes it possible for the first time to appreciate the magnitude and the nuances of Pound’s poetic art. At the same time, by bringing the final text together with the Chinese and Old English poems it claims to translate, as well as the manuscript traces of Pound's Japanese and American interlocutors, the volume also recovers practices of poetic circulation, resituating a Modernist classic as a work of world literature.The Pound text and its intertexts are presented with care, clarity, and visual elegance. By providing the first accurate and unabridged transcriptions of Fenollosa’s notebooks, along with carefully edited Chinese texts, the volume makes it possible to trace the movements of poetic ideas and poetic expression as they veer toward and away from Pound’s creations. In supplying the full Fenollosa texts, the volume overturns decades of scholarship that has mystified Pound’s translation process as a kind of "clairvoyance," displaying instead the impressive amount of sinological learning preserved in Fenollosa’s hard-to-read notebooks and by detailing every deviation from the probable sense of the originals. The edition also supplies exhaustive historical, critical, and textual notes, clarifying points that have sometimes lent obscurity to Pound’s poems and making the process of translation visible even for readers with no knowledge of Chinese. Cathay: A Critical Edition includes the original fourteen Chinese translations as well as Pound’s unique version of "The Seafarer," which is fully annotated alongside its Anglo-Saxon source.

    In a series of exquisite close readings of Arabic and Arab Jewish writing, Jeffrey Sacks considers the relation of poetic statement to individual and collective loss, the dispossession of peoples and languages, and singular events of destruction in the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. Addressing the work of Mahmoud Darwish, Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq, Elias Khoury, Edmond Amran El Maleh, Shimon Ballas, and Taha Husayn, Sacks demonstrates the reiterated incursion of loss into the time of life—losses that language declines to mourn. Language occurs as the iteration of loss, confounding its domestication in the form of the monolingual state in the Arabic nineteenth century’s fallout.Reading the late lyric poetry of the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish in relation to the destruction of Palestine in 1948, Sacks reconsiders the nineteenth century Arabic nahda and its relation to colonialism, philology, and the European Enlightenment. He argues that this event is one of catastrophic loss, wherein the past suddenly appears as if it belonged to another time. Reading al-Shidyaq’s al-Saq ‘ala al-saq (1855) and the legacies to which it points in post-1948 writing in Arabic, Hebrew, and French, Sacks underlines a displacement and relocation of the Arabic word adab and its practice, offering a novel contribution to Arabic and Middle East Studies, critical theory, poetics, aesthetics, and comparative literature.Drawing on writings of Jacques Derrida, Walter Benjamin, Avital Ronell, Judith Butler, Theodor Adorno, and Edward W. Said, Iterations of Loss shows that language interrupts its pacification as an event of aesthetic coherency, to suggest that literary comparison does not privilege a renewed giving of sense but gives place to a new sense of relation

Ausgehend von dem 1846 noch weiter verstandenen Begriff des "Germanisten", unter dem Rechtshistoriker, Historiker und Sprachforscher gefaßt wurden, wird die Spezialisierung der Germanistik zu einer Nationalphilologie und in komparatistischer Perspektive das seit den Anfängen problematische Verhältnis von Nation und Philologie in Europa bis zur Gegenwart reflektiert. Fragen der Traditionsbildung, des Wissens- und des Kulturtransfers sowie der politischen Implikationen philologischer Arbeit werden in systematischen und biographischen Ansätzen exemplarisch untersucht. This volume brings together the papers held at an international conference in Frankfurt am Main (September 1996) commemorating the First Assembly of German Studies Scholars in 1846 in the same city. Proceeding from an earlier understanding of the term Germanist, which in 1846 was extensive enough to embrace law historians, historians and language scholars, the authors reflect on the specialization of German Studies in the form of a 'national philology', proceeding from there to take a comparative focus on what has always been a problematic relation between nation and philology in Europe. Systematic and biographic approaches are taken to issues associated with the development of tradition, the transfer of knowledge and culture, and the political implications of philological work.
