As humanity begins to grapple with the urgency imposed by climate change, reconsidering human/plant relationships becomes essential to grant a sustainable future on this planet. It is in this context that a multifaceted approach to plant-life can reveal the importance of ecological interconnectedness and lead to a more nuanced consideration of the variety of living organisms and ecosystems with which we share the planet. In Botanical Speculations, researchers, artists, art historians, and activists collaboratively map the uncharted territories of new forms of botanical knowledge. This book emerges from a symposium held at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in September 2017, and capitalizes on contemporary arts ability to productively unhinge scientific theories and certainties in order to help us reconsider unquestioned beliefs about this living world

    A book that debunks the popular myth that William Wordsworth was, first and foremost, a poet of daffodils, 'Wordsworth's Gardens and Flowers' provides a vivid account of Wordsworth as a gardening poet who not only wrote about gardens and flowers but also designed - and physically worked in - his gardens. The first section focuses on the gardens that Wordsworth made at Grasmere and Rydal in the English Lake District, and also in Leicestershire, at Coleorton. The gardens are explored via his poetry and prose and the journals of his sister, Dorothy Wordsworth. In the second half of the book, the reader learns more of Wordsworth's use of flowers in his poetry, exploring the vital importance of British flowers and other 'unassuming things' to his work, as well as their wider cultural, religious and political meaning. Throughout, the text is woven around illustrations that bring Wordsworth's gardens and flowers to life, including rare botanical prints, many reproduced here for the first time in several decades

    Der vierte Band der Bibliothek der Esoterik feiert die Magie der Natur und taucht in die Welt des Symbolismus und der Riten in unsereren Beziehungen zur Pflanzenwelt ein. Indem es uns auf eine visuelle Reise durch unsere Entwicklung in Beziehung zur Natur führt, präsentiert Plant Magick das Pflanzenreich auch als kreative Muse – von antiken griechischen Skulpturen bis hin zu visionärer Kunst, die durch psychoaktive Pflanzen, Kakteen und Pilze inspiriert ist. Unsere Mythen, Überzeugungen und unser kollektives Bewusstsein werden ständig auch mit der Natur abgebildet; Reinheit wird von einer weißen Lilie repräsentiert und spirituelles Erwachen von blühendem Lotus. Unsere Wonnen und Klagen werden im Naturkreislauf versinnbildlicht, etwa in dem aus einem Samen geborenen Sprössling oder den abgestorbenen Blättern, die sanft vom herbstlichen Ast fallen. Pflanzen, Bäume und Blumen als Symbole der Veränderung finden sich auch in den Übergangsriten vieler Kulturen auf der ganzen Welt wieder. Rosenblätter in Hochzeitszeremonien markieren die Passage zum Frausein und zur Ehe. Ein Kranz aus Lilien bewacht das offene Grab. Der Strauß des Liebhabers liegt auf der Türschwelle. Der Stamm des Maibaums wird von jungen Mädchen umtanzt, die mit Gänseblümchenkränzen den Beginn des Frühlings feiern. Geburten, Feste und Beerdigungen, fröhliche oder traurige Anlässe – alle werden symbolisch von Kräutern, Blumen oder Zweigen begleitet. Das Einbinden der Natur in unsere Rituale ist unsere Art, Gefühle und Katharsis anzudeuten. Seit jeher fungieren Pflanzen auch als machtvolle Symbole in den Weltreligionen (...)
