    The article analyzes the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on commercial real estate prices. We start by highlighting caveats to bear in mind when referring to direct real estate indices. We then analyze the behavior of commercial real estate prices during the pandemic, emphasizing differences across property types. For that purpose, we use data for both direct and listed real estate. We further discuss changes in the main factors affecting commercial real estate pricing. The article then turns to discussing the likely trajectory of commercial real estate prices in the future. We report that retail and hospitality properties and to a lesser extent office buildings have been affected the most by COVID-19. The other sectors, in particular the residential and industrial sectors, have shown more resilience. We maintain that the future trajectory of real estate prices will vary across sectors and that the type and location of assets will become increasingly important in their valuation

    Developing countries will face more complex challenges as infectious disease patterns transform due to climate change and climate variability. These challenges include how to reduce the incidence of malaria (including the significant challenge of resistant malaria), dengue, and other vector-borne and water-borne diseases that are likely to experience alterations in geographical range and lengthening of the transmission seasons due to changing temperatures and rain patterns. Climate extremes, e.g., heat and floods, are implicating the spread of climate-sensitive infectious diseases such as dengue and malaria transmitted by vectors like mosquitoes. In the context of growing financial pressure on governments due to COVID-19, the ensuing fiscal challenges may severely limit the capacity to effectively respond to health challenges in countries already affected by malaria and dengue. Other countries that have made gains in controlling vector-borne infections could also be vulnerable to rising disease burden. This research paper aims to analyze how changes in malaria and dengue pose a challenge for developing countries as they prepare mitigation and adaptation strategies for climate health. The paper will also provide some general recommendations on the importance of integration of health in national climate change strategies.

    Die globale COVID-19 Pandemie rückt nicht nur gesundheitliche und soziale Aspekte in den Fokus, sondern auch die Thematik der Digitalisierung. Universitäten mussten hier schnell (re)agieren und ihre Anpassungsfähigkeit unter Beweis stellen: So wurde innerhalb kürzester Zeit der Universitätsbetrieb auf ein Minimum heruntergefahren und gleichzeitig die Lehrveranstaltungen in digitale Formate überführt. Wie diese Umstellung wahrgenommen wurde, welche Vor- und Nachteile damit einhergehen, wie es um die Nachhaltigkeit gestellt ist und wie die Zukunft der universitären Lehre aussehen kann, wurde im Rahmen dieser Umfrage an der Technischen Universität Chemnitz zwischen Mitte Juli und Ende September 2020 erhoben. Die Umfrage adressierte sowohl Hochschulmitarbeiterinnen und Hochschulmitarbeiter als auch Studierende. Ungefähr 370 vollständige Rückmeldungen von Studierenden und Mitarbeitenden wurden qualitativ und mittels deskriptiver Statistik ausgewertet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen eine hohe Vielfalt hinsichtlich Verhaltens und Reaktionen auf das Pandemie-bedingte digitale Lehren und Lernen. Digitale Lehre sowie Arbeiten und Lernen von Zuhause bieten vielfältige Vorteile und zugleich Herausforderungen - wie auch das Lernen und Arbeiten am Universitätscampus. Arbeiten und Lernen von Zuhause wird einerseits als bereichernd, andererseits als überfordernd empfunden - und dies nicht nur von Person zu Person, sondern auch zeitgleich innerhalb eines Individuums. Die Flexibilität, welche mit digitaler Lehre einhergeht, wird geschätzt - simultan ist digitale Lehre zugleich mit viel Selbstorganisation und wenig sozialen Kontakten verknüpft, was in Teilen seitens der Studierenden als Überforderung wahrgenommen wird. In der Verknüpfung von Nachhaltigkeit und Digitalisierung zeigen sich eklatante Wissens- und Handlungslücken. Die Ergebnisse zeigen auch Aspekte auf, welche konstruktiv zur weiteren Ausgestaltung digitaler Lehre aufgegriffen werden können. The global COVID-19 pandemic does not only focus on health and social issues, but the topic of digitalization as well. Universities have to (re)act very fast and demonstrate their adaptability: Within shortest time, the university life was reduced to a minimum. Simultaneously, the courses were transferred into digital formats. The following questions were surveyed by this questionnaire at the Chemnitz University of Technology between mid-July and the end of September 2020: How was this transformation done, by which advantages and disadvantages were they accompanied, how sustainable are these processes and how the future of higher education can look like. The survey addressed both university staff and students. Approximately 370 complete responses were analysed qualitatively and with the help of descriptive statistics. The results show a high degree of diversity in terms of behaviours and responses to pandemic digital teaching and learning. Digital teaching and working as well as learning from home offer multiple benefits and at the same time challenges - as does learning and working at the university campus. On the one hand, working and learning from home is perceived as enriching and overwhelming on the other - and this does not only differ from person to person, but also simultaneously within an individual. The flexibility associated with digital teaching is appreciated - at the same time, digital teaching is linked with a great deal of self-organization and few social contacts, which is perceived by some students as excessive demands. There are striking gaps in knowledge and action when it comes to linking sustainability and digitization. The results also reveal aspects for the further development of digital teaching.

    The COVID-19 pandemic has upended health and living standards around the world. This article provides an interim overview of these effects, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Economists have explained how the pandemic is likely to have differential consequences for LMICs, and demand distinct policy responses, compared to rich countries. We survey the rapidly expanding body of empirical research that documents its many adverse economic and non-economic effects in terms of living standards, education, health, and gender equality, which appear to be unprecedented in depth and scale. We also review research on successful and failed policy responses, including the failure to ensure widespread vaccine coverage in LMICs, which is needed to end the pandemic. We close with a discussion of implications for public policy in LMICs, and for the institutions of international governance, given the likelihood of future pandemics and other major shocks (e.g., climate).

    This paper examines the impact of the SARS epidemic in 2003 on intergenerational mobility in China. Using large cross-city variation in SARS cases, our triple difference-in-differences estimates suggest that the SARS epidemic significantly increases the intergenerational transmission of education. Our results show that a one percent increase in the number of SARS cases leads to a 9.3 percent increase in the maternal intergeneration transmission coefficient. The effect of the SARS epidemic is stronger for admission to 4-year bachelor programmes and more concentrated in female students and students in large cities. This paper also investigates the potential mechanisms and finds that more highly educated mothers tend to be more engaged in children's studies during the epidemic period when teachers are absent. These results convey the warning message that pandemics may reduce intergenerational mobility of education
