"Life in the United States today is shot through with uncertainty: about our jobs, our mortgaged houses, our retirement accounts, our health, our marriages, and the future that awaits our children. For many, our lives, public and private, have come to feel like the discomfort and unease you experience the day or two before you get really sick. Our life is a scratchy throat. John Marsh offers an unlikely remedy for this widespread malaise: the poetry of Walt Whitman. Mired in personal and political depression, Marsh turned to Whitman--and it saved his life. In Walt We Trust: How a Queer Socialist Poet Can Save America from Itself is a book about how Walt Whitman can save America's life, too. Marsh identifies four sources for our contemporary malaise (death, money, sex, democracy) and then looks to a particular Whitman poem for relief from it. He makes plain what, exactly, Whitman wrote and what he believed by showing how they emerged from Whitman's life and times, and by recreating the places and incidents (crossing Brooklyn ferry, visiting wounded soldiers in hospitals) that inspired Whitman to write the poems. Whitman, Marsh argues, can show us how to die, how to accept and even celebrate our (relatively speaking) imminent death. Just as important, though, he can show us how to live: how to have better sex, what to do about money, and, best of all, how to survive our fetid democracy without coming away stinking ourselves. The result is a mix of biography, literary criticism, manifesto, and a kind of self-help you're unlikely to encounter anywhere else"--

In Reveille, a man suffers fits of super-natural coughing, flytraps attack a child, a moray haunts a waterbed, poltergeists revise a church's furnishings, an interview is conducted through a man-eater's throat, and the prodigal son stalks his local brothel in a pair of lion hide pajamas. The copious invention in these poems renders a host of holy objects and exotic creatures, surveying them the way one might the emblems in a dream: curious of their meanings but reluctant to interpret them and simplify their mystery. Theologically playful, rhetorically sophisticated, and formally ambitious, Reveille is rooted in imaginative awe and driven by the impulse to praise. At its heart this is a book of love poems, though its loves are varied and complicated by terrible threats: that the cradle will break, that we will cry out and not be answered, and that we will fall asleep and never wake. Against such jeopardy these poems fix our attention on the horizon: "Listen: that's your singular name / unfurling through the whisper-weight trumpets of light." Morning comes and Reveille calls forth a team of baton twirlers on roller skates, pamphlets announcing new flavors of ice cream, caravans of camels hauling bolts of velvet, fragrant monuments to rapture."--Inside front cover Machine generated contents note:Reveille on a Silent Whistle --Jellyfish --Past as a Public Swimming Pool --Python in a Grand Piano --Cradles --Heimlich for a Heavenly Windpipe --Love Parade --Cigarettes --Reveille with Kazoo --Interview Conducted through the Man-Eater's Throat --Stipulation --Prodigalia --White Noise --Picture of Little G.C. in a Prospect of Flowers --Denouement in a Wooden Dollhouse --Reveille with Reimbursement --Born Blind, Discipled by the Blue --Variations on Her Bed in Shadows --Whatever Burn This Be --Matches --Past a Sanctuary Staffed by Poltergeists --Lullaby with Bourbon --Reveille with Lullabies.

In her collection Incarnate Grace, poet Moira Linehan explores, questions, and ultimately celebrates her attempt to live in the temple of the present. After learning she has breast cancer, the poet struggles to live an examined life. Alienated and estranged from her own body, she turns her cancer into "these binoculars, / this new way of looking," and uses it as a way of fixing herself firmly within the moment. As she travels Ireland and the Pacific Northwest, her busy mind moves from the knot in her breast to the knots in her knitting to the illuminated knots of The Book of Kells to the tossing, knotted surface of the sea; from the margins of her surgery - clean but not ideal - to the margins of illuminated manuscripts. She links the mundane to the mythic, intertwining connections between scripture and nature, storms and loss, winter and light, breast cancer and embroidery. As she returns to her home on a small pond in Massachusetts, she takes with her the fruits of her travels: the incarnate grace of the ordinary. Vivid and compelling, Incarnate Grace finds beauty in the worst of circumstances and redemption in the fabric of daily life Sounding It OutKnitting at Annaghmakerrig; The Monks Who Made the Book of Kells; The Art of Manuscript Illumination; The Theology of Manuscript Illumination; Crossing Over; Cill Rialaig Elemental; L'Heure Bleue at Ballinskelligs Bay; Journey to Skellig Michael; To Elijah, at Ballinskelligs; The Sea Here, Teaching Me, ; III; Brushes; Japanese Wall Hanging; The Space Between; Predestination; Vocation; At Sainte-Chapelle; Forty Years Ago; Waiting Room; Woman Ironing; Knitting Lace; For the Men Who Fish along Horn Pond; Our Nature; On Notice; My Great Blue; For the One Who Still Lives inside Me- Winged Woman Walking, After the Storm; Last Wishes; A Deep Wound; Notes; Other Books in the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry; Back Cover.

"In The Surface of the Lit World, Shane Seely draws on a wide range of sources -- from personal memory to biblical narrative -- to explore the stories that we tell ourselves about ourselves, the ways in which we make meaning of our lives. Seely delves into the ways in which family and environment shape us. Poems ranging from terse, meditative lyrics to more direct narratives examine the relationship between what lies visible on the lit surface and what lies just beneath. In addition to first-person autobiographical narratives, there are ekphrastic poems; poems that explore narratives from mythology and religion; and poems based on news reports, radio stories, and audio recordings. Regardless of the approach, the central questions are the same: How do we sense the world we live in? What do the institutions to which we turn for meaning -- family, religion, art, literature, science -- offer us, and in what ways do they fail us? The answers may depend on where we dare to look"--

From ancient times, China's remote and exotic South-a shifting and expanding region beyond the Yangtze River-has been an enduring theme in Chinese literature. For poets and scholar-officials in medieval China, the South was a barbaric frontier region of alienation and disease. But it was also a place of richness and fascination, and for some a site of cultural triumph over exile. The eight essays in this collection explore how tensions between pride in southern culture and anxiety over the alien qualities of the southern frontier were behind many of the distinctive features of medieval Chinese

In this collection of poems Nsah Mala casts a critical compassionate gaze at the predicaments in the lives of present day Cameroonians. The poet lambasts power abuse in Cameroon and Africa. He decries the lost glory of traditional values sacrificed at the altar of ingratiation and materialism. Insalubrities are condemned, ignorance and its ramifications satirised, and wanton destruction of the environment indicted. With a fascinating richness of imagery, Mala conveys the disillusionment, bitterness and traumas of ordinary Cameroonians - young and old - debased with impunity by the lethal and sterile grip on power of the high and might. The moral depravity and human frailties mused about in this exceptionally compelling collection have no room in Mala's paradise of Cameroon
