Julia Pauli explores the meaning of marriage when only few marry. Although marriage rates have dropped sharply, the value of weddings and marriages has not. To marry has become an indicator of upper-class status that less affluent people aspire to. Using the appropriation of marriage by a rural Namibian elite as a case study, the book tells the entwined stories of class formation and marriage decline in post-apartheid Namibia.

Kaya de Wolff hat die deutschsprachige Presseberichterstattung in den Jahren 2001 bis 2016 über den Umgang mit den Verbrechen deutscher Kolonialtruppen untersucht. Sie zeigt, aufgrund welcher Anlässe und auf welche Weisen medial an die historischen Ereignisse erinnert wird, welche Stimmen dabei (nicht) gehört werden und welche gesellschaftlichen Machtverhältnisse und Normen den Anerkennungskampf der Nachfahr*innen der Opfer bedingen.

    The study examines cultural effects of various colonial systems of government in the Spanish- and French-speaking Caribbean in a little investigated period of transition: from the French Revolution to the abolition of slavery in Cuba (1789–1886). The comparison of cultural transfer processes by means of literary production from and about the Caribbean, embedded in a broader context of the circulation of culture and knowledge deciphers the different transculturations of European discourses in the colonies as well as the repercussions of these transculturations on the motherland’s ideas of the colonial other: The loss of a culturally binding centre in the case of the Spanish colonies – in contrast to France’s strong presence and binding force – is accompanied by a multirelationality which increasingly shapes hispanophone Caribbean literature and promotes the pursuit for political independence. The book provides necessary revision to the idea that the 19th-century Caribbean can only be understood as an outpost of the European metropolises. Examining the kaleidoscope of the colonial Caribbean opens new insights into the early processes of cultural globalisation and questions our established concept of a genuine western modernity.     "The Truth about the Desert explores the living conditions under which Tuareg refugees from northern Mali rebuild their lives in the Nigerien diaspora and how these conditions affect their self-understandings and cultural practices, established status hierarchies, and religious identity formation. The book counterbalances an earlier scholarly preoccupation with Tuareg nobility by zoning in on two inferior social status groups, the Bellah-Iklan and free-born vassals, which have been neglected in conventional accounts of Tuareg society. By offering a multi-layered analysis of social status and identity formation in the diaspora, it pleads for a more dynamic understanding of Tuareg socio-political hierarchies. Analyzing in detail how both status groups rely on moralizing labels and racial stereotyping to reformulate their own social and ethnic identity, the study highlights refugees’ aspirations and capacities to remake their imaginary and material worlds in the face of adverse and often deeply humiliating living conditions. The book provides vital insights for refugee studies and for scholarly debates on ethnicity, social identity formation, and memory politics. Souleymane Diallo earned his PhD in socio-cultural anthropology from the University of Cologne. His research interests include forceful migrations and memory politics; Islam, spiritual authority, and power in the Sahara; and the theory and practice of anthropological filmmaking."

    Central Peripheries explores post-Soviet Central Asia through the prism of nation-building. Although relative latecomers on the international scene, the Central Asian states see themselves as globalized, and yet in spite of – or perhaps precisely because of – this, they hold a very classical vision of the nation-state, rejecting the abolition of boundaries and the theory of the ‘death of the nation’. Their unabashed celebration of very classical nationhoods built on post-modern premises challenges the Western view of nationalism as a dying ideology that ought to have been transcended by post-national cosmopolitanism. Marlene Laruelle looks at how states in the region have been navigating the construction of a nation in a post-imperial context where Russia remains the dominant power and cultural reference. She takes into consideration the ways in which the Soviet past has influenced the construction of national storylines, as well as the diversity of each state’s narratives and use of symbolic politics. Exploring state discourses, academic narratives and different forms of popular nationalist storytelling allows Laruelle to depict the complex construction of the national pantheon in the three decades since independence. The second half of the book focuses on Kazakhstan as the most hybrid national construction and a unique case study of nationhood in Eurasia. Based on the principle that only multidisciplinarity can help us to untangle the puzzle of nationhood, Central Peripheries uses mixed methods, combining political science, intellectual history, sociology and cultural anthropology. Die Inspiration für diese neue linguistische Teildisziplin stammt aus der Missionarslinguistik und der rezenten Diskussion über die Zusammenhänge zwischen Sprache, Linguistik und Kolonialismus. Die Zusammenführung dieser beiden Perspektiven zeichnet die "Koloniale und Postkoloniale Linguistik" besonders aus.KPL/CPL macht in erster Linie solche Texte der interessierten Öffentlichkeit (Linguisten, Historiker, Muttersprachler der Objektsprachen usw.) in kommentierter Form zugänglich, die über die Sprachen der ehemaligen europäischen Überseebesitzungen handeln und während der Kolonialepoche abgefasst wurden. Spezielles Augenmerk wird auf bisher unveröffentlichte oder heute nur schwer zugängliche Texte gelegt. However, a unified approach to languages from different colonial areas is still missing.The present volume studies postcolonial varieties that emerged due to changing linguistic and sociolinguistic conditions in different settings across the Americas. The studies cover indigenous languages that are undergoing lexical and grammatical change due to the presence of colonial languages and the emergence of new dialects and creoles due to contact. The contributions showcase the diversity of approaches to tackle fundamental questions regarding the processes triggered by language contact as well as the wide range of outcomes contact has had in postcolonial settings.The volume adds to the documentation of the linguistic properties of postcolonial language varieties in a socio-historically informed framework.     Kolonialismus ist ein historisches Thema, ein Gegenwartsthema und ein geographisches Thema. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes verbinden diese drei Perspektiven und zeigen die Relevanz räumlicher und sozialer Machtverhältnisse des Kolonialismus in der Gegenwart auf. Diese "Kolonialität" genannte Kontinuität zeigt sich in der Wissensproduktion, in öffentlichen Debatten, in der Gestalt europäischer Städte, in lokalen Kämpfen sowie internationalen Politikfeldern. Der Sammelband vereint Beiträge aus der Geographie und Stadtforschung, die sich auf Forschungsansätze der Black Studies, Postcolonial Studies und Decolonial Studies beziehen.

    Postkoloniale Perspektiven im Kunstbetrieb und in der Kulturellen Bildung haben Hochkonjunktur, etwa in der Debatte um das Humboldt Forum Berlin. Doch handelt es sich hierbei meist um eine Rezitations- und weniger um eine Rezeptionspraxis. Dabei wären tiefergehende Debatten um und mit Theorien der Postkolonialität dringend notwendig, um etwa die Zumutungen der dominanten eurozentrischen Ausstellungs- und Vermittlungspraxen aufzudecken. Die Beiträge des Bandes evaluieren diesbezüglich die Verantwortung der Kunst aus einer explizit postkolonialen Perspektive, wobei der Fokus auf den "Double Binds" liegt, die das Feld durchziehen. Dabei werden sowohl diskriminierende Praxen im Feld entlarvt, als auch eine (auto-)kritische Theorieentwicklung vorangetrieben

    Sri Lanka has been regarded as a model democracy among former British colonies. It was lauded for its impressive achievement in terms of human development indicators. However, Sri Lanka's modern history can also be read as a tragic story of inter-ethnic inequalities and tensions, resulting in years of violent conflicts. Two long spells of anti-state youth uprisings were followed by nearly three decades of civil war, and most recently a renewed upsurge of events are examples of the on-going uneasy project of state-building. This book discusses that state-building in Sri Lanka is centred on the struggle for hegemony amidst a kind of politics that rejects individual and group equality, opposes the social integration of marginalised groups and appeals to narrow, fearful and xenophobic tendencies among the majority population and minorities alike. It answers the pressing questions of - How do the dynamics of intra-Sinhalese class relations and Sinhalese politics influence the trajectories of post-colonial state-building? What tensions emerge over time, between Sinhalese hegemony-building and wider state-building? How did these tensions manifest in majority and minority relationships?

Seit 2018 ist sie vergriffen und seitdem stark nachgefragt. Anlässlich des 10-jährigen Jubiläums von Park Books erscheint nun eine Neuausgabe dieses wegweisenden Buches.In den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren erlangten die meisten afrikanischen Länder die Unabhängigkeit von ihrer jeweiligen Kolonialmacht. Die Architektur wurde zu einem der wichtigsten Mittel, mit dem die neu entstandenen Länder ihre nationale Identität zum Ausdruck brachten.     Mediale Diskurse über Asyl sind häufig emotional, polarisiert und erzeugen Bedrohungsgefühle. Außerdem bilden sie einen wesentlichen Raum für die Aushandlung des eigenen Selbstverständnisses und berühren Fragen von Humanität, Solidarität und Zugehörigkeit. Aus einer postkolonialen Perspektive sagen die meist binären Konstruktionen über die echten und unechten Flüchtlinge mehr über das Eigene als über die Ankommenden aus. Über den Zeitraum von 1977-1999 betrachtet Nadine Sylla, wie der Asyldiskurs der Bundesrepublik Konstruktionen des Eigenen hervorbringt. Sie untersucht, welche Beziehungsverhältnisse, Deutungsmuster und Wissensordnungen über Migration vorherrschen und wie sich diese über die Zeit verändern

    "Known for his most famous works, such as The Myth of the Lazy Native (1977) and The Problem of Corruption (1986), as well as his concept of the "captive mind," Syed Hussein Alatas (1928-2007) has made significant contributions to decolonization theory, social theory, and other forms of thought critical of the current neo-colonial and neoliberal world. Although Edward Said acknowledged his debt to Syed Hussein Alatas' work, especially its influence on Edward W. Said's most famous book, Orientalism, Syed Hussein Alatas' work has long been overlooked by Western academia, trapped in its Eurocentric perspective. Spurred by the commitment to continue the development of Syed Hussein Alatas' work, this edited volume attempts to demonstrate the relevance of Syed Hussein Alatas to numerous academic fields, and the potential for his thought to be transformative in the international socio-political realm. Twenty-one authors from various disciplines and countries have contributed to Syed Hussein Alatas and Critical Social Theory: Decolonizing the Captive Mind, in the hopes of bringing his work to the forefront of social and political theory.     The 1978 publication of Edward Said's Orientalism unsettled the world. Over two decades earlier Aime Cesaire had famously spoken of the boomerang effect of colonization, which dehumanized both the colonizer and the colonized. Over time, Said and his 1978 book took Cesaire's anti-imperial critique one step further by enabling the boomerang effect of decolonization.Inspired by that intellectual trajectory, The Boomerang Effect of Decolonization redefines post-Orientalism in a relational and integrative way. This volume draws on the reception and critique of Said's ideas as well as his own attempts to appropriate the boomerang's recursive nature and empower decolonial processes that aimed to transform everyone, regardless of differences both imagined and real, for the betterment of all. Reflecting upon Orientalism, its legacies, and the myriad conversations it has generated, scholars from various disciplines examine acts of anti-racism and liberation through the lens of critical race theory. Covering topics including Said's anti-Orientalist world, Metis/Michif consciousness, writing by the French scholar Jacques Berque, the politics of allyship in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the convergence between healthcare and settler-colonialism in Northwestern Ontario, contributors explore the different paths critiques of imperial cultures and their politics of difference have travelled in Canada and abroad. Said's Orientalism reoriented both decolonization itself and his readers' imaginations. By redefining post-Orientalism as a relational and inclusive mode of liberation, this volume offers tools to think about difference differently, centring its anti-racist framework on the relationship between misrepresented people and their rewritten histories.
