    "The sublime - that elusive encounter with overwhelming height, power or limits - has had a long relationship with music, from the early-modern rise of interest in the Longinian sublime to its saturation of European culture in the later nineteenth century and beyond. Music sits in productive tension with the sublime in many foundational texts. Yet sustained attention to this relationship has been relatively uncommon. Scholars in other fields have called for a moratorium on studies of the sublime, yet there are remarkably few books dedicated to the sublime and music. Drawing together perspectives from musicology, sound studies, literary studies, intellectual history and theology, this collection offers a perspective on music that responds to current understandings of the sublime as a pre-disciplinary category traversing the arts, sciences and humanities"--

    Irish Rebel Songs and Their Origins -- The Red and the Green : Socialism and Nationalism in Early Twentieth-Century Ireland -- Irish Rebel Songs and the Onset of the Troubles -- Music from the Blocks : Long Kesh to the Present -- Sounding Dissent : The Rebel Music Scene in Belfast -- Performing Pre-Agreement Narratives in a "Post-Conflict" Era. "The signing of the Good Friday Agreement on April 10, 1998, marked the beginning of a new era of peace and stability in Northern Ireland. As the public has overwhelmingly rejected a return to the violence of the Troubles (1968-1998), loyalist and republican groups have sought other outlets to continue their struggle. Music has long been used to celebrate cultural identity in the North of Ireland: from street parades to football chants, and from folk festivals to YouTube videos, music facilitates the continuation of pre-Agreement identity narratives in a "post-conflict" era. Sounding Dissent draws on original in-depth interviews with Irish republican musicians, contemporary audiences, and former paramilitaries, as well as diverse historical and archival material, including songbooks, prison records, and newspaper articles, to understand the history of political violence in Ireland. The book examines the hagiographic potential of rebel songs to memorialize a pantheon of republican martyrs, and demonstrates how musical performance and political song not only articulate experiences and memories of oppression and violence, but play a central role in the reproduction of conflict and exclusion in times of peace"--

    Popular Music and the Poetics of Self in Fiction explores the various links between the self and popular music in contemporary fiction. In the novels discussed in this volume, musical references go far beyond creating a tapestry of sound, they make literary characters come alive by giving an account of the physiological and psychological effects of their musical experiences and of their ways of life in different (sub)cultural and social groups. With plots revolving around songs and albums, musicians and bands, and fans and scenes, the thematic focus on the self encompasses the relation of musical taste and identity construction, popular music's function as a medium of individual and collective memory, and its uses in everyday life across decades, spaces, and genres
