Her multisensorial approach opened up new spaces for the female experience to be expressed. Although she worked with some of the best French visual technicians and musicians of her time, critiques have often neglected the visual and sonic aesthetics of her films, and their effects on spectators.     Près de trente ans après sa disparition, la RDA est toujours présente au cinéma et à la télévision, notamment grâce à Good Bye, Lenin ! et La Vie des autres qui ont profondément marqué l'image que l'on se fait de la chute du mur de Berlin et de l'Allemagne communiste. Et pourtant ces succès internationaux n'ont jamais fait l'unanimité auprès de la population de l'ex-RDA. Comment alors expliquer qu'ils aient cristallisé la mémoire filmique et conduit à occulter une production tout aussi importante que variée ? Que nous disent aujourd'hui ces fictions, documentaires ou séries à propos des débats identitaires et mémoriels qui animent l'Allemagne depuis l'unification ? Comment certains films échappent-ils aux images figées et quasi iconiques de la RDA et de la société postsocialiste ?     Introduction: Scholars and Students as Fans -- Chapter 1: Fans of Shakespeare, Fans in Shakespeare -- Chapter 2: Shakespeare, Legitimacy, and the Gift Economy -- Chapter 3: Shakespeare and Fan Fiction -- Chapter 4: Parody and Anti-Fandom: Shakespeare Meets Star Wars (and Other Fan Communities) -- Conclusion. This book examines Shakespearean adaptations through the critical lens of fan studies and asks what it means to be a fan of Shakespeare in the context of contemporary media fandom. Although Shakespeare studies and fan studies have remained largely separate from one another for the past thirty years, this book establishes a sustained dialogue between the two fields. In the process, it reveals and seeks to overcome the problematic assumptions about the history of fan cultures, Shakespeare’s place in that history, and how fan works are defined. While fandom is normally perceived as a recent phenomenon focused primarily on science fiction and fantasy, this book traces fans’ practices back to the eighteenth century, particularly David Garrick’s Shakespeare Jubilee in 1769. Shakespeare’s Fans connects historical and scholarly debates over who owns Shakespeare and what constitutes an appropriate adaptation of his work to online fan fiction and commercially available fan works.

    Picturing home examines the depiction of domestic life in British feature films made and released in the 1940s. It explores how pictorial representations of home onscreen in this period re-imagined modes of address that had been used during the interwar years to promote ideas about domestic modernity. Picturing home provides a close analysis of domestic life as constructed in eight films, contextualising them in relation to a broader, offscreen culture surrounding the suburban home, including magazines, advertisements, furniture catalogues and displays at the Daily Mail Ideal Home Exhibition. In doing so, it offers a new reading of British 1940s films, which demonstrates how they trod a delicate path balancing prewar and postwar, traditional and modern, private and public concerns--

The works probed most fully are ones by Theo Angelopoulos, Ingmar Bergman, Harun Farocki, Theodor Fontane, Henry James, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Chang-dong Lee, Roman Polanski, Thomas Pynchon, and Paul Schrader, while the key recurrent motifs are those of dusk, the horizon, the labyrinth, and the ruin

While the idea of women who stay at home and men who dominate the streets may seem outdated, binary considerations of gender, space, and power still proliferate in contemporary cinema. This open access book adopts a fluid approach to space designed to accommodate wilful, affirmative, and imaginative perspectives of gender on screen. Through close analysis, or micro-analysis, of Messidor (Alain Tanner, 1979), Vendredi Soir (Claire Denis, 2002), Wadjda (Haifaa Al-Mansour, 2012), and Head-On (Fatih Akin, 2004), this book looks for light, textures, rhythms, movement, and sound that give shape to affirmative forms, forms that contribute to rewriting bodies and spaces--such as cars, homes, and city streets--that reject traditional gender and power structures. How does the patient perceive the world outside of coma, if at all? The simple answer to these questions is that we don't know. Yet the sheer volume of literary and media texts would have us believe that we do. This book examines representations of coma and brain injury across a range of texts, exploring common tropes and linguistic devices used to portray this medical condition and which help shape universal mythologies of coma. It looks at how these texts represent, or fail to represent, long-term brain injury, drawing on narratives of coma survivors that have been produced and curated through writing groups that the author has run over the last 7 years. Discussing a diverse range of cultural works, including novels by Irvine Welsh, Stephen King, Tom McCarthy and Douglas Coupland, as well as film and media texts such as The Sopranos, Kill Bill, Coma and The Walking Dead, this study provides an explanation for our fascination with coma. With a proliferation of overly positive stories of survival in the media and in literature, this book explores the potential impact these have upon our own understanding of coma and its victims."--
