    Dubbed "a Columbus of new poetic continents" because of his search for a poetics as diverse as the universe itself, Velimir Khlebnikov is the creator of some of the most extraordinary poems in the Russian language. Sometimes surreal, sometimes esoteric, but always dazzlingly innovative, the 192 poems in this volume range broadly from the lyrical to the epic. One of the founders of Russian Futurism, Khlebnikov spent his entire brief life searching for a new poetic language to express his convictions about the rhythm of history and the connection between the truth of a poet's language and the cosmic truth about the universe. His poetry is characterized by often radical experimentation with language and words, a forceful utopian vision, complex theories of time and history, and multiple poetic personae: from an infantry commander to a Carthaginian war hero, from Cleopatra's paramour to the letters of the alphabet.     In this pioneering study of contemporary Greek poetry, Karen Van Dyck investigates modernist and postmodernist poetics at the edge of Europe. She traces the influential role of Greek women writers back to the sexual politics of censorship under the dictatorship (1967-1974). Reading the effects of censorship—in cartoons, the dictator's speeches, the poetry of the Nobel Laureate George Seferis, and the younger generation of poets—she shows how women poets use strategies which, although initiated in response to the regime's press law, prove useful in articulating a feminist critique. In poetry collections by Rhea Galanaki, Jenny Mastoraki and Maria Laina, among others, she analyzes how the censors'tactics for stabilizing signification are redeployed to disrupt fixed meanings and gender roles.As much a literary analysis of culture as a cultural analysis of literature, her book explores how censorship, consumerism, and feminism influence contemporary Greek women's poetry as well as how the resistance to clarity in this poetry trains readers to rethink these cultural practices. Only with greater attention to the cultural and formal specificity of writing, Van Dyck argues, is it possible to theorize the lessons of censorship and women's writing

    James Biester sees the shift in late Elizabethan England toward a witty, rough, and obscure lyric style-metaphysical wit and strong lines-as a response to the heightened cultural prestige of wonder. That same prestige was demonstrated in the search for strange artifacts and animals to display in the wonder-cabinets of the period.By embracing the genres of satire and epigram, poets of the Elizabethan court risked their chances for political advancement, exposing themselves to the danger of being classified either as malcontents or as jesters who lacked the gravitas required of those in power. John Donne himself recognized both the risks and benefits of adopting the'admirable'style, as Biester shows in his close readings of the First and Fourth Satyres.Why did courtier-poets adopt such a dangerous form of self-representation? The answer, Biester maintains, lies in an extraordinary confluence of developments in both poetics and the interpenetrating spheres of the culture at large, which made the pursuit of wonder through style unusually attractive, even necessary. In a postfeudal but still aristocratic culture, he says, the ability to astound through language performed the validating function that was once supplied by the ability to fight. Combining the insights of the new historicism with traditional literary scholarship, Biester perceives the rise of metaphysical style as a social as well as aesthetic event

    n the summer of 1903, just before he turned twenty-four, Wallace Stevens joined a six-week hunting expedition to the wilderness of British Columbia. The adventure profoundly influenced his conceptions of language and silence, his symbolic geography, and his sensibilities toward wild nature as nonhuman "other." The rugged western mountains came to represent that promontory of experience-"green's green apogee"-against which Stevens would measure the reality of all his later perceptions and conceptions and by which he would judge the purpose and value of works of the human imagination. Notations of the Wild views his poetry as a radical reimagining of the nature/culture dialectic and a reinstatement of its forgotten term-Nature.

    Milton's 1645 Poems is a double volume, containing not only Milton's major English lyric poems - the Nativity ode, "L'Allegro" and "Il Penseroso," "Lycidas," and the mask Comusbut also his youthful elegiac poetry and his mature Latin poems, which were written in the late 1630s after his major English lyrics had already been composed. In Milton and the Tangles of Neaera's Hair, Stella P. Revard traces the development of the 1645 Poems as a double book and investigates the debt of both English and Latin poetry to the neo-Latin and vernacular traditions of the Continental Renaissance. Too often critics simply ignore the presence of the Latin poems in the 1645 volume. Revard claims that to do so is to miss Milton's implicit intention to balance English and Latin works. She shows that the Latin poems complement the English works and reveal even more than the English poems the personal, political, and cultural crises that Milton was undergoing in the late 1630s, supplementing what the earlier English poems and particularly "Lycidas" tell us about Milton's shift of direction as poet. The Latin poems also announce Milton's intention to write an epic in his native tongue rather than in Latin. Yet even as Milton renounced Latin as the language for poetical expression, he resolved to carry into his English poems the ideals of the Continental humanistic tradition. Milton and the Tangles of Neaera's Hair provides a balanced view of Milton's first book of poetry and also looks at poetry from the Continental Renaissance tradition hitherto neglected. The reader is better able to understand how this tradition shaped both the English and the Latin poetry of Milton's 1645 Poems, as well as how Milton became the poet who went on to write the greatest epic in the English language, Paradise Lost
