    Main description: Die Verfasserin untersucht Celans Übersetzungspoetik und deren Wandel ausgehend von seinen Übertragungen französischer Lyrik. Neben den bereits sehr bekannten Übertragungen von Rimbauds »Bateau ivre« (1958) und Valérys »Jeune Parque« (1960) kommen auch die bislang kaum beachteten Übersetzungen von Benjamin Péret (1950), Guillaume Apollinaire (1951–1959), Jules Supervielle (1958–1968) und André du Bouchet (1968) zur Sprache. Während Celan bis etwa 1960 in den Übertragungen die gleichen Stilmittel wie in der Poetik seiner eigenen Lyrik entwickelte, gehen beide ab den sechziger Jahren getrennte Wege. Die Übertragungen emanzipieren sich von der eigenen dichterischen Sprache, werden ›wörtlicher‹, ›treuer‹. Diese Änderung im übersetzerischen Verfahren wird als Konsequenz eines immanenten Widerspruchs in Celans Poetik des Dialogs interpretiert

    Main description: With reference to Celan’s renderings of French poetry, the author discusses the poetics underlying Paul Celan’s translations and the changes it underwent in the course of time. The study concentrates not only on the well-known translations of Rimbaud's »Bateau ivre« (1958) and Valéry’s »Jeune Parque« (1960) but also pays close attention to the hitherto neglected translations of Benjamin Péret (1950), Guillaume Apollinaire (1951–1959), Jules Supervielle (1958–1968), and André du Bouchet (1968). Up to about 1960 Celan employed largely the same stylistic resources in his translations as in his own poetry. In the 1960s, however, we find a parting of the ways. The translations emancipate themselves from Celan’s personal poetic diction, becoming more ›literal‹ and ›faithful‹. This change in translation procedure is interpreted here as a consequence of an immanent contradiction in Celan’s poetics of dialogue

    The "Carmina XII sapientum" is a corpus of inscriptions from late classical antiquity which was widely received in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; it consists of twelve cycles of twelve poems, each cycle with a different theme. The titles of the manuscripts name twelve scholars as the authors. The present study provides the first detailed critical commentary on the individual elements of the corpus, dealing with all its textual, linguistic, stylistic and content-related aspects. The commentary on each cycle is preceded by a historical treatment of the motifs. In the process, the author reaches a completely new interpretation of this collection of epigrams. She presents it as a jocular work in the ancient literary tradition of the symposium; it was produced at the turn of the 4th century AD by a rhetorically skilled author already versed in Christian discourses, probably by the rhetor and later Christian apologist Lactantius

    Die 'Poetik der Sinne' ist für Rilkes Spätwerk zentral und unterstreicht seine Bedeutung für die Lyrik der Moderne. Ausgehend vom Bild der 'fünffingrigen Hand' der Sinne im Aufsatz "Ur-Geräusch" (1919) erschließt die Arbeit erstmals die poetologische Argumentation des Autors und weist sie in der dichterischen Praxis nach. Rilkes Poetik folgt weder einer Hierarchie der Sinne noch synästhetischen Konzepten; vielmehr halten alle fünf Sinne auf eine Grenze des sinnlich Erfahrbaren zu. Das Sehen, werkgeschichtlich bislang leitend, wird im Spätwerk nicht durch das Hören als neuem Leitsinn abgelöst, sondern bleibt in umgewerteter Weise für das poetische Raumkonzept unabdingbar.     Main description: Ernst Jandl (1925–2000) is a spectacular phenomenon. For an avant-garde experimental lyric poet he achieved a completely unusual level of popularity. Poems such as ottos mops (‘fritz’s bitch’) have long been in common currency. It is not the case, as is often argued, that laughing at Jandl’s poems is not a coincidental effect of hisunusual use of language. There are multiple varieties of humour which Jandl transforms anew in his language. Despite this, the comic aspects of Jandl’s work have hardly been researched.     Main description: When Crusader armies on their way to the Holy Land attacked Jewish communities in the Rhine Valley, many Jews chose suicide over death at the hands of Christian mobs. With their defiant deaths, the medieval Jewish martyr was born. With the literary commemoration of the victims, Jewish martyrology followed. Beautiful Death examines the evolution of a long-neglected corpus of Hebrew poetry, the laments reflecting the specific conditions of Jewish life in northern France. The poems offer insight into everyday life and into the ways medieval French Jews responded to persecution. They also suggest that poetry was used to encourage resistance to intensifying pressures to convert. The educated Jewish elite in northern France was highly acculturated. Their poetry--particularly that emerging from the innovative Tosafist schools--reflects their engagement with the vernacular renaissance unfolding around them, as well as conscious and unconscious absorption of Christian popular beliefs and hagiographical conventions. At the same time, their extraordinary poems signal an increasingly harsh repudiation of Christianity's sacred symbols and beliefs. They reveal a complex relationship to Christian culture as Jews internalized elements of medieval culture even while expressing a powerful revulsion against the forms and beliefs of Christian life. This gracefully written study crosses traditional boundaries of history and literature and of Jewish and general medieval scholarship. Focusing on specific incidents of persecution and the literary commemorations they produced, it offers unique insights into the historical conditions in which these poems were written and performed

Der vorliegende Band stellt die Traditionslinien und die meisten wichtigeren Dichtungsschulen von William Carlos Williams bis in die 90er Jahre (u.a. Objektivismus, Beat-, San Francisco-, Black Mountain-, New York-, Deep Image- und Language-Lyrik sowie ethnische Dichtung) anhand der Selbstäußerungen von 23 Lyrikerinnen und Lyrikern und einer kleineren Auswahl repräsentativer Gedichte vor. Erkennbar wird dabei die Vielfalt und auch die Dynamik der poetischen Produktion und Reflexion in den Vereinigten Staaten.

    Der älteste der in dieser Anthologie vereinten portugiesischen Lyriker, Al Berto, beginnt in der Mitte der siebziger Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts zu publizieren, der jüngste, Ruy Ventura, im Jahr 2000. Mit Ausnahme von Al Berto, der 1997 starb, setzen alle Autoren ihr Werk bis in die Gegenwart fort. Die siebziger Jahre stellen in der Tat einen wichtigen Einschnitt in der Geschichte Portugals dar. Die Nelkenrevolution vom 25. April 1974, die einer 48-jährigen Diktatur ein Ende bereitete, bedeutete einen Bruch im nationalen Leben, mit tief greifenden Konsequenzen auf politischer, wirtschaftlicher, sozialer und kultureller Ebene. Die Literaturkritik ist sich deshalb einig, dass das Jahr 1974 auch eine grundlegende Neuorientierung der portugiesischen Literatur mit sich brachte, deren verschiedene lyrische Tendenzen in den von Eberhard Geisler für diesen Band übertragenen Texten sichtbar werden.
