    This book presents for the first time a thorough study of the imagery in Wallace Stevens's poetry and the patterns which these images form. Heretofore, most discussions of Stevens's work presupposed an understanding of the difficult and bizarre surface imagery and dealt mainly with broad generalizations which often left the student of Stevens's poems unsatisfied. The brilliant surface of the poems, the detailed imagery of specific passages, is here examined clearly and systematically. The images, indexed at the back of the book, are examined in four natural groups: Figures of the Mind, of Disorder, of Order, and of Change. The last half of the book is concerned with close analyses of some longer poems of Stevens's using the information gleaned from the "anatomy" of the first half

    One of Japan’s most renowned intellectuals, Motoori Norinaga (1730–1801) is perhaps best known for his notion of mono no aware, a detailed description of the workings of emotions as the precondition for the poetic act. As a poet and a theoretician of poetry, Norinaga had a keen eye for etymologies and other archaeological practices aimed at recovering the depth and richness of the Japanese language. This volume contains his major works on the Yamato region—the heartland of Japanese culture—including one of his most famous poetic diaries, The Sedge Hat Diary (Sugagasa no Nikki), translated into English here for the first time.Written in 1772 while Norinaga journeyed through Yamato and the Yoshino area, The Sedge Hat Diary was composed in the style of Heian prose and is interspersed with fifty-five poems. It offers important insights into Norinaga the poet, the scholar of ancient texts, the devout believer in Shinto deities, and the archaeologist searching for traces of ancient capitals, palaces, shrines, and imperial tombs of the pre-Nara period. In this piece Norinaga presents Yoshino as a "common poetic space" that readers must inhabit to develop the "common sense" that makes them live ethically in the poet’s ideal society.Norinaga’s ideal society is deeply imbued with the knowledge of poetry and the understanding of emotions as evidenced in the translation of Norinaga’s twenty-six songs on aware (pathos) also included here. The rest of the volume offers translations of several essays by the poet that shed further light on the places he visited in Yoshino and on the main topic of his scholarly interests: the sound of the uta (songs) from his beloved Yamato. An introductory essay on Norinaga’s poetics serves as a guide through the dense arguments he developed both practically in his poems and theoretically in his essays

    Main description: Die Verfasserin untersucht Celans Übersetzungspoetik und deren Wandel ausgehend von seinen Übertragungen französischer Lyrik. Neben den bereits sehr bekannten Übertragungen von Rimbauds »Bateau ivre« (1958) und Valérys »Jeune Parque« (1960) kommen auch die bislang kaum beachteten Übersetzungen von Benjamin Péret (1950), Guillaume Apollinaire (1951–1959), Jules Supervielle (1958–1968) und André du Bouchet (1968) zur Sprache. Während Celan bis etwa 1960 in den Übertragungen die gleichen Stilmittel wie in der Poetik seiner eigenen Lyrik entwickelte, gehen beide ab den sechziger Jahren getrennte Wege. Die Übertragungen emanzipieren sich von der eigenen dichterischen Sprache, werden ›wörtlicher‹, ›treuer‹. Diese Änderung im übersetzerischen Verfahren wird als Konsequenz eines immanenten Widerspruchs in Celans Poetik des Dialogs interpretiert

    Main description: With reference to Celan’s renderings of French poetry, the author discusses the poetics underlying Paul Celan’s translations and the changes it underwent in the course of time. The study concentrates not only on the well-known translations of Rimbaud's »Bateau ivre« (1958) and Valéry’s »Jeune Parque« (1960) but also pays close attention to the hitherto neglected translations of Benjamin Péret (1950), Guillaume Apollinaire (1951–1959), Jules Supervielle (1958–1968), and André du Bouchet (1968). Up to about 1960 Celan employed largely the same stylistic resources in his translations as in his own poetry. In the 1960s, however, we find a parting of the ways. The translations emancipate themselves from Celan’s personal poetic diction, becoming more ›literal‹ and ›faithful‹. This change in translation procedure is interpreted here as a consequence of an immanent contradiction in Celan’s poetics of dialogue

    Main description: Ernst Jandl (1925–2000) is a spectacular phenomenon. For an avant-garde experimental lyric poet he achieved a completely unusual level of popularity. Poems such as ottos mops (‘fritz’s bitch’) have long been in common currency. It is not the case, as is often argued, that laughing at Jandl’s poems is not a coincidental effect of hisunusual use of language. There are multiple varieties of humour which Jandl transforms anew in his language. Despite this, the comic aspects of Jandl’s work have hardly been researched. But what impels poets to leap across time and space to speak to invisible listeners, seeking an ideal intimacy--George Herbert with God, Walt Whitman with a reader in the future, John Ashbery with the Renaissance painter Francesco Parmigianino? In Invisible Listeners, Helen Vendler argues that such poets must invent the language that will enact, on the page, an intimacy they lack in life. Through brilliantly insightful and gracefully written readings of these three great poets over three different centuries, Vendler maps out their relationships with their chosen listeners. For his part, Herbert revises the usual "vertical" address to God in favor of a "horizontal" one-addressing God as a friend. Whitman hovers in a sometimes erotic, sometimes quasi-religious language in conceiving the democratic camerado, who will, following Whitman's example, find his true self. And yet the camerado will be replaced, in Whitman's verse, by the ultimate invisible listener, Death. Ashbery, seeking a fellow artist who believes that art always distorts what it represents, finds he must travel to the remote past. In tones both tender and skeptical he addresses Parmigianino, whose extraordinary self-portrait in a convex mirror furnishes the poet with both a theory and a precedent for his own inventions.
