    From Columbus onward, the discourse of European-American expansion has been characterized by a poetics of imperialism, Eric Cheyfitz contends, a poetics that has set the conventions for translating the languages of the inhabitants of the New World into the language of empire, a discourse that has conquered by translating the inhabitants themselves into "natives, "savages," "cannibals," or "Indians." Cheyfitz charts the course of American imperialism from the arrival of Renaissance Europeans in a New World open for material and rhetorical cultivation to the violent foreign ventures of twentieth-century America in a Third World judged equally in need of cultural translation. Passionately and provocatively, he reads James Fenimore Cooper and Leslie Marmon Silko, Frederick Douglass and Edgar Rice Burroughs within and against the imperial framework. At the center of the book is Shakespeare's Tempest, at once transfiguring the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown and figuring much of American literature. In a final chapter completely new to this edition, Cheyfitz extends the argument of The Poetics of Imperialism by reaching back to the visual and verbal representations of Native Americans produced by the English of the Roanoke Voyages, two decades before the establishment of the Jamestown colony.

    In recent decades, Wordsworth's poetry has been a focus for many of the theoretical schools of criticism that comprise modern literary studies. Don Bialostosky here proposes to adjudicate the diverse claims of these numerous schools and to trace their implications for teaching. Bialostosky draws on the work of Bakhtin and his followers to create a "dialogic" critical synthesis of what Wordsworth's readers--from Coleridge to de Man--have made of his poetry. He reveals Wordsworth's poetry as itself "dialogically" responding to its various contexts, and opens up fruitful possibilities for current criticism and teaching of Wordsworth. This challenging book uses the case of Wordsworth studies to make a far-reaching survey of modern literary theory and its implications for the practice of criticism and teaching today.

    Though central to contemporary debates over identity, politics, and culture, the concept of tradition often remains unexamined. In a series of readings that transgress cultural and disciplinary boundaries, Daniel Cottom subjects this concept to close scrutiny. He calls into question conventional accounts of tradition, with their reliance on standard oppositions between dogma and reason, animality and humanity, community and society, religion and science, and modernity and its predecessors. Tradition, as Cottom envisions it, is a complex of cultural forces that moves, divides, and undoes those it touches; it ravishes, is ravished, and is centrally etched with acts of ravishment. Engaging writers from William Shakespeare to John Ashbery and from Phillis Wheatley to Antonin Artaud, Cottom examines literary history within the contexts of war, rape, and slavery; education, technology, and sexuality; repetition, imitation, stereotypy, and travesty; censorship, grief, and ecstacy. He also evaluates the work of various theorists who address questions of tradition, such as Sigmund Freud, Walter Benjamin, Jacques Derrida, and Adrienne Rich. Cottom draws on works in social and cultural history as well as on literary texts from different eras, nations, and genres. At once using and critiquing contemporary literary and cultural theory, this eloquent book shows why tradition continues to be of compelling interest and importance.
