Consisting of more than 30 original essays by leading scholars in the field, this companion provides a broad introduction to Colonial American literatures. The volume situates texts in their various historical and cultural contexts, including colonialism, imperialism, diaspora, and nation formation. In particular, it brings out the comparative, hemispheric and transatlantic nature of the writing of this period, and highlights the interactions between non-scribal native groups and Europeans that helped to shape early American writing. The companion is divided into four main sections: the opening section on issues and methods covers a wide range of approaches to defining and reading early American writing; the second section, entitled "New World Encounters", considers the interactions between cultural groups during the early centuries of exploration; the third section on identities looks at the development of regional spheres of influence in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; while the final section considers major genres and writers of the period in a series of "Cross-Cultural Conversations".; The companion is designed to be used alongside Castillo and Schweitzer's "The Literatures of Colonial America: An Anthology" (Blackwell Publishing, 2001)

Emerging from the ruins of the former Soviet Union, the literature of the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia is analyzed from the fruitful perspective of postcolonialism, a theoretical approach whose application to former second-world countries is in its initial stages. This groundbreaking volume brings scholars working in the West together with those who were previously muffled behind the Iron Curtain. They gauge the impact of colonization on the culture of the Baltic states and demonstrate the relevance of concepts first elaborated by a wide range of critics from Frantz Fanon to Introduction: Baltic postcolonialism and its critics /Violeta Kelertas --Is the post- in postcolonial the post- in post-Soviet?: towards a global postcolonial critique /David Chioni Moore --Fusions of discourse: postcolonial/postmodern horizons in Baltic culture /Karl E. Jirgens --A Soviet experience of our own: comprehension and the surrounding silence /Vytautas Rubavičius --Postcolonial change: power, Peru and Estonian literature /Piret Peiker --Nazi and Soviet dysphemism and euphemism in Latvian /Andrejs Veisbergs --Toward a postcolonial perspective on the Baltic States /Kārlis Račevskis --Learning to curse in Russian: mimicry in Siberian exile /Jūra Avižienis --Estonia's time and monumental time /Maire Jaanus --The sieve and the honeycomb: features of contemporary Lithuanian cultural time and space /Arūnas Sverdiolas --Perceptions of the self and the other in Lithuanian postcolonial fiction /Violeta Kelertas --Viivi Luik's "The beauty of history": aestheticized violence and the postcolonial in the contemporary Estonian novel /Tiina Kirss --Searching for national allegories in Lithuanian prose: Saulius Tomas Kondrotas's "The slow birth of nation" / Dalia Cidzikaitė --Estonia and pain: Jaan Kross's "The czar's madman" /Maire Jaanus --Postcolonial subjectivity in Latvia: some signs in literature /Inta Ezergailis --Labyrinths of meaning in Aleksandrs Pelēcis' "Siberia book" and Agate Nesaule's "Woman in Amber": a postmodern/postcolonial reading /Karl E. The orientation of academic institutions has in recent years been moving away from highly specialized area studies in the classical sense towards broader regional and comparative studies. Cultural studies points to the limitation of Western approaches to non-Western cultures – a development not yet reflected in actual research and data collections. Bringing together scholars from all over the world with specialized knowledge in both Western and non-Western languages, literatures, and cultures, this collection of essays provides new insights into the agency of non-Western literatures in relation to the West – a term used with critical caution and, like other common binary dualisms, challenged here. Inter-cultural expertise, seldom applied in the combination of Asian, African, and ‘oriental’ perspectives, makes this compilation of essays an important contribution to the study of colonialism and postcoloniality. Topics covered include postcolonial Arabic writing; T.S. Eliot in contemporary Arabic poetry; Algerian (and Berber) literature; the English language and narratives in Kenyan art; characterization, dialogism, gender and Western infuence in modern Hindi fiction; Naya drama in India; modern Burmese theatre and literature under Western influence; Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front and the Vietnamese Novel Without a Name ; Western Marxism and vernacular literature in colonial Indonesia; hybridity in Komedi Stambul ; and Sherlock Holmes in/and the crime fiction of Siam and Indonesia Contributors: Amina Azza Bekkat; Thomas de Bruijn; Matthew Isaac Cohen; Rasheed El-Enany; Keith Foulcher; Saddik M.
