Benito Perez Galdos (1843-1920) was a prolific Spanish realist novelist, who through a lack of good translations is virtually unknown outside Spain, though he has been compared as second only to Cervantes in Spanish literature and whose work is considered to give the deepest, truest, most comprehensive realities of Spain. Dona Perfecta (1876) was Galdos' first novel delving into the social world of middle-class Spain in the 19th century; a young liberal arrives in an imaginary cathedral city, with the intention of marrying his cousin. However the church interferes and obstructs the marriage, leading to a tragic clash between the traditional, provincial outlook and modern, liberal outlook of Madrid. Graham Whittaker's edition with Spanish text, English translation and substantial introduction aims to make this important novel widely available in English and the introduction and notes provide a comprehensive overview of the novel and Galdos' work. Spanish text with facing-page translation, commentary and notes

In an imaginary interview with Beckmann, a figure from Borchert's drama „The Man Outside“, the question of the definition of a ‘problem' in a biblical sense is posed against the background of a theology of the cross. In other words: how can people, in their post-paradisiacal situation, recognize problems as problems and then deal with them? The key words ‘communism' and ‘liberalism' are introduced in the conversation in the interview by Beckmann as being simultaneuously criteria for the identification of problems as well as the parameters within which reactions to problems can be found.

Feudalism and liberalism in the U.S. imaginary -- Plantation romance and southern medievalim in Poe's magazine fiction -- Melodrama of primitive accumulation : Cooper's feudal claims -- Marriage, chivalry, and feudal law : Harriet Jacobs and E. D. E. N. Southworth -- Resistance to the feudal-liberal alliance : Ridge's The life and adventures of Joaquín Murieta and Melville's Benito Cereno -- Feudalism, individualism, and authority in Emerson's later works -- Conclusion: The Kentucky castle. "Medieval America analyzes literary, legal, and historical archives that help tell a new story about the formation of American culture. Against Cold War-era studies of U.S. culture that argued, following political scientist Louis Hartz's "liberal consensus" model, that the United States emerged from the Revolutionary era free from Europe's feudal institutions and uninterested in the production of its medieval culture productions, Robert Yusef Rabiee contends that feudal law and medieval literature were structural components of the American cultural imaginary in the nineteenth century. The racial, gender, and class formations that emerged in the first era of U.S. nation building were deeply indebted to medieval social, political, and religious thought-an observation that challenges the liberal consensus model and allows us to better grasp how American social roles developed. Far from casting off feudal tradition, the early United States folded feudalism into its emerging liberal order, creating a knotted system of values and practices that continue to structure the American experience. Sometimes, the feudal residuum contradicted the liberal values of the Unites States. Other times, the feudal residuum bolstered those values, revealing deep sympathies between so-called "modern" and "premodern" political thought. Medieval America thus aims to reorient our discussions about American cultural and political development in terms of the long arc of European history"--

"In America and in England, faltering economies at home and failed wars abroad have generated a political and intellectual hysteria. It is a derangement manifested in a number of ways: nostalgia for imperialism, xenophobic paranoia, and denunciations of an allegedly intolerant left. These symptoms can be found even among the most informed of Anglo-America.... Pankaj Mishra examines the politics and culture of this hysteria, challenging the dominant establishment discourses of our times. In essays that grapple with the meaning and content of Anglo-American liberalism and its relations with colonialism, the global South, Islam, and "humanitarian" war, Mishra confronts writers such as Jordan Peterson, Niall Ferguson, and Salman Rushdie. He describes the doubling down of an intelligentsia against a background of weakening Anglo-American hegemony, and he explores the commitments of Ta-Nehisi Coates and the ideological determinations of The Economist. These essays provide a vantage point from which to understand the current crisis and its deep origins."--

The four axioms of existence -- Toxic late liberalism -- Atomic ends, the whole Earth, and the conquered Earth -- Toxic ends, the biosphere, the colonial sphere -- Conceptual ends, solidarity, and stubbornness. "Between Gaia and Ground examines four axioms of existence that have emerged in recent years across a significant segment of critical theory: the entanglement of existence; the unequal distribution of power to affect the local and transversal terrains of this entanglement; the multiplicity and collapse of the event as the sine qua non of political thought; and the racial and colonial history that informed modern western ontologies and epistemologies and the concept of the west as such. Beyond these axioms, Between Gaia and Ground is interested in the broader anticolonial struggles from which they emerged and a reactionary formation, late liberalism, which has attempted to remold, blunt, and redirect these struggles in the context of contemporary climatic, environmental, viral and social collapse. Elizabeth Povinelli treats these axioms as distinct theoretical statements, demonstrating that they are part of much broader discursive surfaces reflecting opposing currents in the direction of political thought and action in the wake of geontopower. Between Gaia and Ground seeks to show how a seemingly casual syntactic arrangement of theoretical statements results in dramatically differing paradigms for figuring the present as a coming catastrophe (l'catastrophe à venir) and as an ancestral one (l'catastrophe ancestral/histoire)"--

Liberalism is the constitutional philosophy of Western societies. Liberal principles constitut(ionaliz)e the competitive arenas of modern society, so that competition for cooperation is put into service for cooperation: in science, in the economy and politics.

What was the modernist response to the global crisis of liberal world order after 1919? This book tells the story of the origins of liberal world governance in Cambridge modernist circles, the literary response to the Versailles Peace of 1919, and the contestation of that institutional moment across a range of world literary modernities. Challenging standard accounts of reactionary postwar politics, Interwar Modernism and the Liberal World Order articulates a modernism animated by the contradictions of liberal governance between the wars. The book develops a new materialist reading of modernist politics hinged on the official figures that traverse both modernist texts and liberal order. This official liberal world shapes interwar arts and letters from wartime Cambridge to revolutionary Shanghai.

Building a National Literature boldly takes issue with traditional literary criticism for its failure to explain how literature as a body is created and shaped by institutional forces. Peter Uwe Hohendahl approaches literary history by focusing on the material and ideological structures that determine the canonical status of writers and works. He examines important elements in the making of a national literature, including the political and literary public sphere, the theory and practice of literary criticism, and the emergence of academic criticism as literary history. Hohendahl considers such key aspects of the process in Germany as the rise of liberalism and nationalism, the delineation of the borders of German literature, the idea of its history, the understanding of its cultural function, and the notion of a canon of major and minor authors.

Duncan Ivison's book considers how these states can accommodate indigenous populations today, and contends that we need to move towards a historically and theoretically nuanced liberalism better suited to our times"--

The promise of prosperity: transplanting the 'new realities' -- Communicating the 'practical faith ': the historical neoliberal and PR nexus -- 'We need a new narrative': neoliberalism and PR language practice -- Happiness, plastic truth, and the story of climate -- 'Borderlands': PR and the broken moorings of language -- Airborne: PR, plasticity and pandemic politics. "This book is about public relations. But it is also about how, a whole generation, has learned to think, to speak and to live within a market-driven neoliberal logic, using the distinctive language practices and vocabularies of 'PR'. To chart this cultural shift, a detailed historical analysis of the little-known Mont Pelerin Society and its followers in the twentieth century shows how the relationships that joined money, power and an ideological agenda impelled a partnership with public relations that led to its wider propagation and proliferation in society. Today, these conditions not only determine what or whose voices are heard but they form an iron grip on the public imagination, deafening us to the cries of those marginalized individuals and groups entrapped by circumstance and subject to fear, vulnerability, and hardship, or to the science that is critical to the planet's survival. As such, the book focuses on two of the most pressing global issues and public debates of present time: climate change denial and the elision of the human rights of people seeking to become members of a nation-state through, refugee status, political asylum, and immigration. Public debate determines politics, but all too often politics lags, or stumbles and falls, as the many voices jostling for attention in the contest of ideas become caught up in conflict and language games and fail to make any real mark at all. The distinctive language practices of PR organized around an all-encompassing, free-market based view of the world, make this new reality happen in ways that are sometimes counter-intuitive. In engaging with an original and integrated analysis of everyday language, its harnessing and its totalizing neoliberal effects, the book provides a panoramic critique of PR that will be essential reading for scholars and students of communication, culture, and politics"--

"The first detailed treatment of Switzerland in British literature and culture from Joseph Addison to John Ruskin, this book analyzes the aesthetic and political uses of what is commonly called the 'Swiss myth' in the parallel development of Romanticism and liberalism. The myth merged the country's legends going back to the Middle Ages with the Enlightenment image of a happy, free nation of alpine shepherds. Its unique combination of conservative, progressive, and radical associations enabled writers before the French Revolution to call for democratic reforms, whereas those coming after could refigure it as a conservative alternative to French liberté. Integrating intellectual history with literary studies, and addressing a wide range of Romantic-period texts and authors, among them Byron, the Shelleys, Hemans, Scott, Coleridge, and, above all, Wordsworth, the book argues that the myth contributed to the liberal idea of the people as a sublime yet sleeping sovereign"--

In the mid-Victorian era, liberalism was a practical politics it had a party, it informed legislation, and it had adherents who identified with and expressed it as opinion. But how would these subjects of liberal politics actually live liberalism? To answer this question, Hadley focuses on the key concept of individuation Liberal formalism in an informal world -- A body of thought: the form of liberal individualism -- A frame of mind: signature liberalism at the Fortnightly review -- Thinking inside the box: the ballot and the politics of liberal citizenship -- Occupational hazards: the Irishness of liberal opinion -- A body of opinion: Gladstonian liberalism.

Lyrical subjects and liberal publics -- The poetess and the politics of profession -- Elizabeth Oakes Smith's lyrical activism -- Frances Ellen Watkins Harper's two-body problem -- Making the modernist poetess: Edna St. Vincent Millay -- E. Pauline Johnson's poetics acts. "In this book, Elissa Zellinger analyzes both political philosophy and poetic theory in order to chronicle the consolidation of the modern lyric and the liberal subject across the long nineteenth century. In the nineteenth-century United States, both liberalism and lyric sought self-definition by practicing techniques of exclusion. Liberalism was a political philosophy whose supposed universals were limited to white men and created by omitting women, the enslaved, and Native peoples. The conventions of poetic reception only redoubled the sense that liberal selfhood defined its boundaries by refusing raced and gendered others. Yet Zellinger argues that it is precisely the poetics of the excluded that offer insights into the dynamic processes that came to form the modern liberal and lyric subjects"--

In ‘On Governmentality’, Michel Foucault linked the emergence of the science of political economy to a new kind of power unique to the modern order. Departing from this observation, but integrating the wider imperial context of this historical shift by examining developments in the British Empire, the first part of this study analyses how the science of political economy was linked to the emergence of new identities, social practices as well as forms of political intervention and resistance in not only metropolises and colonies, but also the wider context of the Pax Britannica. The second part of the study analyses how these global entanglements shaped the conditions which made the emergence of anti- and postcolonial counter discourses and practices in India possible. By tracing how Indian imaginings of postcolonial modernity and concomitant practices of resistance emerged from engagements with globally circulating discourses on political economy, it shows the mutual entanglement between Western modernity and its postcolonial alternatives.

Reassesses American elitisms of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Brings together the insights of recent Victorianist and Americanist scholarship in order to show how Adams, James, and Wharton engage with liberal thinking about whiteness, democracy, and citizenship. Locates these authors in disciplinary history, revealing that their critical responses to Bostonian liberalism feed into the ideas that structure the study of US literary history during the twentieth century. Offers a rich portrait of the Harvard intellectual milieu to which these authors respond, bringing fresh attention to their connections with thinkers such as and W.E.B. Du Bois, Charles William Eliot, Charles Eliot Norton, and Barrett Wendell. Arguing that Henry Adams, Henry James and Edith Wharton articulated their political thought in response to the liberalism that reigned in Boston and, more specifically, at Harvard University, this book shows how each of these authors interrogated that liberalism's arguments for education, democracy and the political duties of the cultivated elite. Coit shows that the works of these authors contributed to a realist critique of a liberal New England idealism that fed into the narrative about 'the genteel tradition', which shaped the study of US literature during the twentieth century

F.A Hayek is one of the most important and influential advocates of liberalism in the 20th century. His theory is famously based on the concept of spontaneous order, an order emerging from the interaction of individuals without central control and appears critical of every form of interventionism. At the same time Hayek also defends the necessity to improve or even to constitute a liberal order. This seminal tension, between an evolutionary strand and a designing strand in Hayek's political theory, gave birth to a set of debates regarding the consistency of Hayek's thinking. In this article I argue, against several commentators and critics, that the theory of spontaneous order, which draws on complexity theory and cultural evolution, does not clash with Hayek's defense of liberalism, but allow for a better understanding of it. My analysis puts forward the importance of a liberal design of a framework enhancing spontaneity, a radical liberalism, which goes beyond a whiggish liberalism defending the slow piecemeal evolution of social norms and institutions. I thus defend that Hayek provides a theory of a liberal design of spontaneity. Since Hayek is concerned by the liberal framework allowing for the growth of a beneficial spontaneous order, his liberalism should not be defended on evolutionary grounds, which are flawed, but on normative grounds, which are debatable.
