    Der Begriff der Beriebsform im Einzelhandel ist traditionell auf die Art der Marktbearbeitung und den damit verbundenen Einsatz der marketingpolitischen Instrumente fokussiert. Die Marktbearbeitungssysteme des Handels gehen jedoch mit spezifischen Kosten- und Leistungsstrukturen einher, von denen ein entscheidender Einfluss auf die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Betriebsformenkonzepten ausgeht. Die Frage des Verhältnisses zwischen den Marktbearbeitungsformen und den damit verbundenen Kosten- und Leistungsstrukturen wird anhand ausgewählter Betriebstypen des stationären Lebensmitteleinzelhandels untersucht. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die Form der Marktbearbeitung nicht nur die Kosten- und Leistungsstrukturen dieser Betriebstypen bestimmt, sondern dass die differenzierten Kosten- und Leistungsstrukturen und ihre Dynamik auch ihrerseits die Möglichkeiten der Handelsbetriebe bei der Gestaltung der spezifischen Handelsleistung determinieren und dadurch die Potenzialentwicklung beeinflussen. -- Betriebsformen des Einzelhandels (Formate) ; Lebensmittel-Einzelhandel ; Kostenstrukturen im Handel ; Produktivität im Einzelhandel The notion of the retail format focuses traditionally on the strategic marketing aspect and the specific configurations of the retail marketing mix. Retail marketing concepts are however a concomitant of specific operating cost and return on capital structures as well as of specific labour and selling space productivity levels which has a decisive impact on the competitiveness of retail formats. The relationship between retail marketing concepts and the connected cost and return structures is discussed on the basis of selected grocery store retailing formats in Germany. As it is shown the retail marketing concepts do not only determine the cost and return structures of these retail formats, but the differentiated cost and return structures also have a significant impact on the potential scope of retail companies in the configuration of merchandise assortment and retail service and on the general growth prospects of specific retail formats. -- Retail Formats , Grocery Retailing , Retail cost structure , Retail productivity

    This paper investigates the factors that explain the level and dynamics of manufacturing firm productive efficiency. In our empirical analysis, we use a unique sample of about 39,000 firms in 256 industries from the German Cost Structure Census over the years 1992-2005. We estimate the efficiencies of the firms and relate them to firm-specific and environmental factors. We find that (1) about half the model's explanatory power is due to industry effects, (2) firm size accounts for another 20 percent, and (3) location of headquarters explains approximately 15 percent. Interestingly, most other firm characteristics, such as R&D intensity, outsourcing activities, or the number of owners, have extremely little explanatory power. Surprisingly, our findings suggest that higher R&D intensity is associated with being less efficient, though higher R&D spending increases a firm's efficiency over time. -- Frontier analysis ; determinants of efficiency ; firm performance ; industry effects ; regional effects ; firm size

    We apply and extend the cost-based approach to bundling and tying under competition developed in Evans and Salinger (2004) to over-the-counter pain relievers and cold medicines. We document that consumers pay much less for tablets with multiple ingredients than they would if they bought tablets with each ingredient separately. We then decompose the sources of these savings into marginal cost savings and a component that reflects fixed costs of product offerings. The analysis both documents substantial economies of bundling and illustrates the sort of cost analysis that is necessary for understanding tying.

    The stochastic frontier analysis (Aigner et al., 1977, Meeusen and van de Broeck, 1977) is widely used to estimate individual efficiency scores. The basic idea lies in the introduction of an additive error term consisting of a noise and an inefficiency term. Most often the assumption of a half-normal distributed inefficiency term is applied, but other distributions are also discussed in relevant literature. The natural estimation method seems to be Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation because of the parametric assumptions. But simulation results obtained for the half normal model indicate that a method of moments approach (MOM) (Olson et al., 1980) is superior for small and medium sized samples in combination with inefficiency not strongly dominating noise (Coelli, 1995). In this paper we provide detailed simulation results comparing the two estimation approaches for both the half-normal and the exponential approach to inefficiency. Based on the simulation results we obtain decision rules for the choice of the superior estimation approach. Both estimation methods, ML and MOM, are applied to a sample of German commercial banks based on the Bankscope database for estimation of cost efficiency scores.

    Using micro-level panel data of about 35,000 firms from the German Cost Structure Census, we analyze the differences of technical efficiency across industries. Technical efficiency is estimated by firms' fixed effects. One striking result is that the distribution of technical efficiency across industries is positively skewed. This is because the efficiency distribution is truncated at the lower end due to the least efficient firms which exit the market. We investigate the causes of technical efficiency differences across industries. Our econometric analyses provide evidence that capital and human capital intensity, the degree of vertical specialization as well as new firm formation rate are important for explaining the average technical efficiency of an industry.

    This paper shows the strategic aspects of international outsourcing in an oligopolistic market, if outsourcing is attractive because of fixed cost savings. We show that outsourcing decisions are strategic substitutes. Furthermore, we demonstrate that due to decreasing individual output, intensified competition increases the incentive to save fixed costs of integrated production and thus leads to more outsourcing. Additionally, we analyse how domestic costs and taxation affect the equilibrium level of outsourcing and employment. Here, we find that lower domestic costs decrease the proportion of outsourcing and therefore, increase employment. Concerning the impact of taxation, we find that a lower consumption tax on output decreases outsourcing. In case of a reversed outsourcing motivation, where outsourcing is associated with lower marginal costs but higher fixed costs than the domestic production, we show that the opposite effects concerning competition and taxation occur. -- outsourcing ; cost structure ; Cournot-competition ; taxation
