    Mandevilles Reisen (um 1370) stehen für eine Vielzahl handschriftlicher und gedruckter Überlieferungen in nahezu allen europäischen Volkssprachen und sind ein für die europäische Wahrnehmung des Fremden grundlegendes Narrativ. Aus dezidiert christlicher Perspektive beschreiben sie die Welt des späten Mittelalters und bedienen sich dabei in einer raffinierten Zusammenlesung anderer Texte des tradierten Wissens über fremde Länder, Völker, Sitten und Religionen. Die Untersuchung widmet sich der Darstellung des fremden Religiösen und analysiert, unter Berücksichtigung der Relationen zwischen der Topographie und der in ihr situierten Religionen und Rituale, die Semantisierungs-, Wertungs- und Reflexionsprozesse, über die in Handschriften und Frühdrucken das Verhältnis zwischen Fremdem und Eigenem unterschiedliche Akzente erfährt. Dabei zeigt sich erstens, dass je nach Entstehungskontext und Überlieferungsform die Textlogiken der einzelnen Versionen stark variieren, und zweitens, dass die Reisen bei weitem nicht so tolerant dem fremden Religiösen gegenüber sind, wie bisher von der Forschung angenommen wurde. Vielmehr setzen sie sich kritisch mit dem Glauben der Fremden und den Praktiken und Institutionen der eigenen Kirche auseinander.

    The scene is Rome in the fifteenth century, Golden Rome, a magnet drawing pilgrims by its architectural attractions and the magnitude of its religious importance as the mother of faith. The Austin friar John Capgrave attended Rome for the Jubilee in 1450, including the Lenten stations, and his 'Solace of Pilgrimes', intended as a guide for subsequent pilgrims, was written up following the author's own pilgrimage. In three parts it covers the ancient monuments, the seven principal churches and the Lenten stations, and other churches of note, especially those dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The work has been described as the most ambitious description of Rome in Middle English. The present edition offers a new Text based on a transcription of the author's holograph manuscript. Parallel with the Text there is a modern English Translation. The illustrations, mostly from a period slightly later than the 1450 Jubilee, aim to give some visual clue as to what Capgrave saw. There is a full account of the multiple sources that he used, most of which is the product of new research. Following the Text there is a Commentary that aims to provide some background information about the buildings and monuments that Capgrave focuses on, and to explain and illuminate any difficulties or points of interest in the Text. Capgrave is an omni-present guide leading us towards what he considered an appropriate interpretation of the classical past as a foundation for the Christian present, which built on it and surpassed it

    Loren L. Johns untersucht die symbolische Bedeutung von arnion ( Lamm) in der Johannesapokalypse. Er geht symbolischen Vorläufern von arnion in der hebräischen Bibel nach und zieht literarische Texte aus dem Nahen Osten und der Griechisch-Römischen Zeit ebenso heran, wie Homer und die Fabeln des Aesop. Es zeigt sich, daß die Bedeutung von arnion weder auf einen aggressiven, kriegerischen Bock in der griechischen Literatur vor der Apokalypse zurückzuführen ist, noch, daß es normalerweise mit Opferlamm assoziiert wurde. Vielmehr symbolisiert der Begriff Verletzlichkeit.Der Autor widerlegt die These der Existenz einer militanten Lamm-Retter-Figur in den frühjüdischen apokalyptischen Texten, indem er nachweist, daß all diese Texte, die vor der Johannesapokalypse entstanden sind, von christlicher Seite ediert wurden. Die Christologie der Apokalypse ist also nicht militant: Das Blut auf dem Lamm in Off 19 stammt nicht von den erschlagenen Feinden Gottes, sondern von der Schlachtung des Lammes. This is a study of the symbolic meaning of arnion (lamb) in the Apocalypse of John as the central feature of the Christology of Revelation. Loren L. Johns argues that arnion did not refer to an aggressive, militant ram in extant Greek literature prior to the Apocalypse, nor did it normally denote the expiatory sacrificial lamb. Rather, it symbolized vulnerability in the extant literature.The author examines the symbolic antecedents of arnion in the Hebrew Bible, while ranging throughout the literary evidence from the ancient Near East and the Greco-Roman era, even touching on the evidence from Homer and Aesop's Fables traditions. He analyzes closely the evidence that has been offered in support of a militant lamb-redeemer figure in the apocalyptic traditions of Early Judaism and concludes that none of the writings that predate the Apocalypse and that are cited in support of this tradition is free from Christian editorializing. Furthermore, the Christology of the Apocalypse is not militant. The blood on the lamb in Rev. 19 is not from the defeated enemies of God; it is from the slaughter of the lamb.Loren L. Johns concludes that the Lamb Christology of the Apocalypse has an ethical force – that the author develops his Lamb Christology specifically to encourage his audience to the kind of faithful witness that he was convinced would result in their death as innocent lambs in much the same way that Jesus' witness did.
