    The popularity of theodicy over the past several decades has given rise to a countermovement, “anti-theodicy”, which admonishes attempts at theodicy for various reasons. This paper examines one prominent anti-theodical objection: that it is hubristic, and attempts to form an approach to theodicy which evades this objection. To do so I draw from the work of Eleonore Stump, who provides a framework by which we can glean second-personal knowledge of God. From this knowledge, I argue that we can derive a theodicy which does not utilise the kind of analytic theorising anti-theodicists accuse of intellectual hubris.

    Job compares himself time and again to defeated and trapped animals in the poetic core of the Book of Job. God, in responding to Job, describes in loving detail, as would a proud parent her children, the animals that populate creation. This paper argues that the Joban Poet uses animal imagery to allow Job to express an evolving sense of his traumatized self and the world and God to affirm the beauty and vitality of creation and, indirectly, also of Job who has come to think of himself as a trapped and hunted animal.

    This article examines the Hebrew divine אֱלוֹהַּ in Job without a counterpart in the LXX in order to contribute to a deeper understanding of the theology and translation technique of LXX Job. Interest in the theology of the different Septuagint (LXX) books is vastly growing. In order to examine whether the LXX books reflect a different theology than the Masoretic Text (MT), I have recently analysed the additional attestations of ὁ θεός and ὁ κύριος in LXX Job and Proverbs without counterpart in MT (see Revue Biblique 128/4 [2021]; Louvain Studies 43/4 [2021] and Vetus Testamentum [forthcoming]). These studies, which focus on explicit differences between the Hebrew and the Greek text, have proven to be successful in describing (1) the (more nuanced) theology and (2) translation technique of both books.

    A review of Coen criticism, specifically attending to Elijah Siegler’s recent, significant collection of essays, indicates that Coen brothers’ films frame characters in harsh, amoral worlds. This esthetic "framing" is similar not only to Camus’ analysis of the absurd, but also to the "feel" of some biblical narratives. Where Camus urges one to move beyond the absurd to absurd creation and biblical narratives press on to faith - at least, in most religious readings of them - the Coens laugh. A selective overview of the use of bibles in Coen brothers’ films demonstrates that the Coens’ biblical hermeneutic is risible. Their films frame bibles in amoral worlds, displace the Holy Bible, deploy popular bibles, twist and subvert bibles, reduce bibles to implicit backgrounds, and use bibles to laugh at characters, stories, and the human condition. In this, the Coens are also laughing at themselves. The article concludes by asking whether the Coens’ hermeneutic can help academics read biblical narratives differently and, perhaps, even learn to laugh at themselves as they read.

    Often described as the documentary version of Clerks, The Parking Lot Movie follows a select group of parking lot attendants who work at The Corner Parking Lot in Charlottesville, Virginia. The eccentric brotherhood of attendants consist of grad students, overeducated philosophers, surly artists, middle-age slackers and more. Located nearby the University of Virginia and tucked in behind a number of bars, the assortment of overeducated attendants who work at The Corner Parking Lot have to deal with throngs of drunken frat boys, vandals, and SUV-driving jerks who either take off without paying or fight them over sums as low as $0.40. Fortunately in this establishment the normally agreed upon rules of customer service don't exist. Disrespect the staff and face the consequences. In what becomes a discourse on American life, these overeducated parking attendants wax profoundly about car culture and capitalism, seek vengeance against entitled patrons and thieves, and make fun of drunken jerks. If the intersection between the status quo and the quest for freedom is their ultimate challenge, could a slab of asphalt be an emotional way station for The American Dream? (Covertext)

    This book sets out to correct the usual portrayal of Tanzania's agriculture as being primarily or solely based on peasant farming. The significant contribution of the private and the public sectors during and after the colonial period is examined, along with its growing importance of women's labour as unpaid family labour in peasant household production and as waged labour in peasant and largescale capitalist farming. She also traces the crisis of the so-called 'shortage of casual labour' in the estate sector during the 1970s and early 1980s to women's resistances and the mushrooming of 'off-the-books' activities organised by women in urban and rural areas.     Since the early 2000s, several scholars have explored the use of trauma theory as an interpretive lens to understand some of the most difficult and painful texts in the Bible. The use of trauma theory does not constitute a method of interpretation but a frame of reference that, when coupled with other methodologies (e.g., psychology, post-structuralism, post-colonialism, refugee studies, etc.), can yield innovative results. While trauma theory has proven useful in the study of exilic texts in particular, scholars have ventured beyond the narrower concern of exilic literature, investigating the use of trauma theory for other portions of the Hebrew Bible and New Testament. The impact of trauma is a significant component of the human condition that lies beneath the production of a wide variety of biblical texts.
