In the context of the Holocaust, Technology, and Culture, my interest in digital artifacts led me to recognize three key factors that mutually influence aspects of knowledge and understanding across each of those area: access, agency, and action. In today's technology-driven era, 'books' are no longer a 'fixed' form. Studying Holocaust Literature as an artifact is one way to bring together enabling technologies for scholarly exploration and civic engagement about the Holocaust. To catalyze interest in Holocaust Literature, I examined contemporary authors' initial responses to the Holocaust as they relate to Holocaust-related Literature. My case study methodology details relationships within and across three independent and interlinked pairs of selected books: Miklos Radnoti's Tajtekos eg and Zsuzsanna Ozsvath's In the Footsteps of Orpheus: The Life and Times of Miklos Radnoti; Anne Frank's Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, and David Barnouw's The Phenomenon of Anne Frank; the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, and Steven Jacobs and Mark Weitzman's Dismantling the Big Lie: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. The results demonstrate how an educational framework can be used to effect change by fostering a shift in how we see images, how we read words, and in computational representation.

The success of the Israeli vampire-crime-comedy series Juda is not at all trivial, to say the least. It dared to adopt a controversial subgenre that is associated with antisemitism and blood libels. Moreover, it deals with social traumas and the ethnic conflict between the Zionist Ashkenazi hegemony and the Mizrahi sector, which accuses the hegemony of oppression and discrimination. Juda expresses a critical agenda: a dissolution of Zionist values as the only solution and chance for redemption, both for the hero and for society. Thus, despite emerging at a time when the horror genre had experienced a late blooming on Israeli screens, its appearance is connected to two other central processes in contemporary Israeli film and television: the incorporation of religion and the ascendancy of the Mizrahi hero. Juda overcomes the inherent problem in the image of the Jewish vampire—first by creating a distinction between a Jewish vampire and a gentile vampire, and second by having a protagonist who is a Mizrahi Jew.

This book offers intimate readings of a diverse range of global autobiographical literature with an emphasis on the (re)presentation of the physical body. The twelve texts discussed here include philosophical autobiography (Nietzsche), autobiographies of self-experimentation (Gandhi, Mishima, Warhol), literary autobiography (Hemingway, Das) as well as other genres of autobiography, including the graphic novel (Spiegelman, Satrapi), as also documentations of tragedy and injustice and subsequent spiritual overcoming (Ambedkar, Pawar, Angelou, Wiesel). In exploring different literary forms and orientations of the autobiographies, the work remains constantly attuned to the physical body, a focus generally absent from literary criticism and philosophy or study of leading historical personages, with the exception of patches within phenomenological philosophy and feminism. The book delves into how the authors treated here deal with the flesh through their autobiographical writing and in what way they embody the essential relationship between flesh, spirit and word. It analyses some seminal texts such as Ecce Homo, The Story of My Experiments with Truth, Waiting for a Visa, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, A Moveable Feast, Night, Baluta, My Story, Sun and Steel, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, MAUS and Persepolis. Lucid, bold and authoritative, this book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of philosophy, literature, gender studies, political philosophy, media and popular culture, social exclusion, and race and discrimination studies.

This paper begins with a brief definition of allusion. The majority of the paper investigates the ways that memory language was used by ancient authors (Jewish, Greek, and Latin) as a literary technique to signal overt intertextual and intratextual allusions. I argue that this is a recognized, intentional, and cross-cultural phenomenon with varied practices and that scholars need to consider this in future studies of intertextuality.

Lamed Shapiro (1878-1948) was the author of groundbreaking and controversial short stories, novellas, and essays. Himself a tragic figure, Shapiro led a life marked by frequent ocean crossing, alcoholism, and failed ventures, yet his writings are models of precision, psychological insight, and daring. Shapiro focuses intently on the nature of violence: the mob violence of pogroms committed against Jews; the traumatic after-effects of rape, murder, and powerlessness; and, the murderous event that transforms the innocent child into witness and the rabbi's son into agitator. Within a society on the move, Shapiro's refugees from the shtetl and the traditional way of life are in desperate search of food, shelter, love, and things of beauty. Remarkably, and against all odds, they sometimes find what they are looking for. More often than not, the climax of their lives is an experience of ineffable terror. This collection also reveals Lamed Shapiro as an American master. His writings depict the Old World struggling with the New, extremes of human behaviour combined with the pursuit of normal happiness. Through the perceptions of a remarkable gallery of men, women, children - even of animals and plants - Shapiro successfully reclaimed the lost world of the shtetl as he negotiated East Broadway and the Bronx, Union Square, and vaudeville Pogrom tales -- The cross -- Pour out thy wrath -- In the dead town -- The kiss -- White challah -- The Jewish regime -- The old world -- Smoke -- Tiger -- Eating days -- The rebbe and the rebbetsin -- The man and his servant -- Between the fields -- Myrtle -- The new world -- At sea -- The chair -- New Yorkish.

This article presents motifs shared exclusively by Slavonic minor pseudepigrapha and early rabbinic writings. It is suggested that these cases bear evidence of common early Jewish sources behind both rabbinic and East Christian traditions. This, it is argued, enables a much earlier dating of these rabbinic traditions (otherwise being dated to the period from the third to the twelfth centuries).

The Book of Judith has aroused a great deal of scholarly interest in the last few decades. This volume, the first full length commentary on Judith to appear in over 25 years, includes a new translation and a detailed verse-by-verse commentary, which touches upon philological, literary, and historical questions. The extensive introduction discusses the work's date and historical background, and looks closely at the controversial question of the book's original language. Biblical influences on the book's setting, characters, plot, and language are investigated, and the heroine, Judith is viewed against the background of biblical women (and men). The influence of classical Greek writers such as Herodotus and Ctesias on the work is noted, as are the interesting differences between the Septuagint and Vulgate versions of Judith
