"Years Like Water is a decade-long look at a small Russian village, its inhabitants, ramshackle institutions, nature, and mythology. The series loosely follows the lives of four interconnected families - the children growing up unsupervised in a magical wilderness, whilst the adults struggle for survival. Over more than ten years of visits, Sablin attended birthdays and funerals, drank tea with the grandmothers, and listened to stories of the villagers' loneliness and love for one another. Her photographs from Alekhovshchina explore and describe a world that doesn't fit into the neat narrative of 'Putin's Russia' presented by both Eastern and Western media. It is more complicated - interweaving beauty, poverty, trauma, and hope." -- Publisher's description

Foreword / Alan Govenar -- Back to the blanket: Wendy Red Star in conversation with Josh T. Franco -- Our side: Wendy Red Star's material conceptualism / Julia Bryan-Wilson -- Fifty shades of buckskin: Satire as a decolonizing tool / Tiffany Midge -- Setting the stage: Self-portraits and the politics of looking / Jordan Amirkhani -- The Indian congress: Reconfiguring the indigenous archive / Annika K. Johnson -- Mosquitos: A line through grief: poems / by Layli Long Soldier -- Contributors. "'Delegation' is the first comprehensive monograph by Apsaalooke/Crow artist Wendy Red Star, whose photography recasts historical narratives with wit, candor, and a feminist, Indigenous perspective. Red Star centers Native American life and material culture through self-portraiture, collages, archival interventions, and site-specific installations. Whether referencing nineteenth-century Crow leaders or 1980s pulp fiction, museum collections or family pictures, she constantly questions the role of the photographer in shaping Indigenous representation. Includes an array of Red Star's lens-based works from 2006 to the present, and a range of essays, stories, and poems." --

The changing seasons captivated Vincent van Gogh (1853-90), who saw in their unending cycle the majesty of nature and the existence of a higher force. 'Van Gogh and the Seasons' is the first book to explore this central aspect of van Gogh's life and work. Van Gogh often linked the seasons to rural life and labor as men and women worked the land throughout the year. From his depictions of peasants and sowers to winter gardens, riverbanks, orchards, and harvests, he painted scenes that richly evoke the sensory pleasures and deprivations particular to each season. This stunning book brings to life the locales that defined his tumultuous career, from Arles, where he experienced his most crucial period of creativity, to Auvers-sur-Oise, where he committed suicide. It looks at van Gogh's interpretation of nature, the religious implications of the seasons in the era in which he lived, and how his art was perceived against the backdrop of various symbolist factions, antimaterialist debates, and esoteric beliefs in fin de siècle Paris. The book also features revealing extracts from the artist's correspondence and artworks from his own collection that provide essential context to the themes in his work Vincent van Gogh and the Seasons: Images of Nature and Humanity / Sjraar van Heugten -- 'To Everything there is a Season': The Rhythms of the Year in Vincent van Gogh's Socio-Religious Worldview / Joan Greer -- Conflicts of Interest: Vincent van Gogh and French Symbolism / Ted Gott -- The Seasons in van Gogh's Letters: A Selection / Sjraar van Heugten -- Vincent van Gogh Biography / Ted Gott -- Autumn / Laurie Benson, Ted Gott, Sophie Matthiesson -- Winter / Laurie Benson, Ted Gott, Sophie Matthiesson -- Spring / Laurie Benson, Ted Gott, Sophie Matthiesson -- Summer / Laurie Benson, Ted Gott, Sophie Matthiesson -- Van Gogh and Japanese Prints / Sophie Matthiesson -- Van Gogh's Collection of Prints / Ted Gott

Selected from Guido Guidi's archive by Marcello Galvani, this book presents 94 colour photographs made with small-format cameras between 1976 and 1981. Mostly unpublished, these images form an ideal link between two phases of Guidi's work that are already well known. After the irreverent black and white snapshots of the early 1970s, this series marks Guidi's progressive shift toward the colour work he began to investigate in the early 1980s with a large format 8x10 camera. Here we already see the photographer's growing fascination with his quotidian landscape, including vernacular buildings, ordinary people, and visual accidents, yet caught with a?quick, peripatetic eye that questions the possibility of grasping the flux of experience and the notion of photographic time. "Tra l'altro" which translates as incidentally, by the way, or among other things acts as an historical moment of transition in Guidi's visual thinking, but also, in his own words, as "passing observations" and a way to "make contact" with the outside world

This ambitious publication centers indigenous perspectives on traditional artworks from Africa by focusing on the judgments and vocabularies of members of the communities who created and used them. It explores cross-cultural affinities spanning the African continent while respecting local contexts; it also documents an exhibition that is extraordinary in scope and scale. The project's overriding goal is to reconsider Western evaluations of these arts in both aesthetic and financial terms. The volume features nearly 300 works from collections around the world and from the important holdings of the Art Institute of Chicago. Although it emphasizes the sculptural legacy of sub-Saharan cultures from West and Central Africa, it also includes examples of artistic traditions associated with eastern and southern Africa as well as textiles and objects designed for domestic, ritual, and decorative functions

"La Celestina, a Spanish literary masterpiece second only in importance to Don Quixote in Spanish literature, has been shaped by the inclusion of images from its very first edition in 1499. The subsequent five centuries were punctuated by many illustrated editions; imaginary portraits of the eponymous procuress Celestina by painters such as Murillo, Goya, and Picasso; and, more recently, screen and stage adaptations. The eponymous character, Celestina, became the prototype from which later representations of procuresses and bawds derived. The Image of Celestina sheds light on the visual culture that developed around La Celestina, including paintings, illustrations, and advertisements. Enrique Fernández examines La Celestina as a mixed-media text, incorporating methods from disciplines such as art history and women’s and cinema studies and considers a variety of images including promotional posters, lobby pictures, and playbills of theatrical and cinematic adaptations of the book. Using a visual studies approach, The Image of Celestina ultimately illuminates the culture of Celestina, a mythical figure, who surpasses the literary text in which she originated."--

"Illustrations have been an important element of many of the most extensively read editions of Shakespeare's plays, from the frontispieces to Nicholas Rowe's 1709 edition to the multiple images placed within the text of Victorian editions. Through symbols the illustrations have explored language and character; by allusion to earlier paintings they have offered critical readings; and by gesture, setting and costume they have redesigned the plays within the visual vocabulary of their own times. In all these ways they offer important exchanges with contemporary social, aesthetic and critical concerns, and, despite being largely ignored by scholars, are central to the plays' reception. Highly illustrated, including many images not previously reproduced, the book allows the reader to share the experience of early readers of the plays. Building on the author's earlier work in Painting Shakespeare it offers a fresh address to the tradition of visual criticism and assimilation of Shakespeare's plays."--Jacket Play, page and image -- Spatial narratives and Rowe's Shakespeare -- Rococo and reflection : Gravelot, Hayman and Walker -- Bell, performance and reading -- 'Ornaments, derived from fancy' : illustrating the plays, 1780--1840 -- The growth of feeling : Boydell, Taylor and the picturesque -- The extra-illustrated edition -- Early Victorian populism : Charles Knight and Kenny Meadows -- Selous, Gilbert and reader involvement -- Decline and revival.

Although there have been over 700 illustrators of Poe's work over the past two centuries, this book chooses to examine only the best of them. Beginning with the French in the nineteenth century and tracing the great illustrators of Poe to the present, this book not only provides close analyses of individual visualizations but also seeks to supply an art history context to understanding their emergence. The majority of the artists featured remain unknown, even to Poe scholars, although their artwork represents iterations inspired by the most famous of Poe's poems and stories. In some cases, the illustrations helped increase the visibility of particular Poe works and to make them part of the international Poe canon. A few of the illustrators featured in this book (e.g., Manet, Doré, Redon, Beardsley) are recognized among the most famous artists in the world. Others, such as Martini and Blumenschein, while remaining minor figures in art history, nevertheless produced immortal work based on Poe's fiction and poetry. While still other visual artists represented here (Rackham, Dulac, Clarke) achieved artistic fame as book illustrators based on homages to other writers and fairy tales in combination with their Poe studies; their work on Poe, however, helped to solidify their larger reputations as professional illustrators. The last chapter extends traditional visualizations influenced by Poe to include his impact on twentieth- and twenty-first century filmmakers and cartoonists. They, too, found in Poe's writing either a source for direct re-creation or an inspiration for their own atmospheric excursions into the bizarre, the exotic, and the psychologically complex.
