Violence and the forms of its representation are a long neglected central element of Classical Greece. After reviewing the history of the 5th century BC with its intensive experience of violence, the studies in this volume examine the tension between violence and aesthetics in the fields of myth, cult, and literature with particular reference to tragedy and visual art. Beye here offers a lively and challenging overview of Greek literature from Homer to Apollonius of Rhodes, providing a coherent social and historical background to the era.Beye stresses the great distance that separates the twentieth century from the age and audience for which ancient Greek literature was intended. He emphasizes those aspects of antiquity which are apt to be most alien to modern-day readers, particularly the oral nature of early poetry and the public and political-and hence manipulative, conformist, and conventional-quality of much of the literature. He also notes the openly imitative practices of early authors and establishes the Homeric epics as the dominant informing feature of subsequent literature

Three of his speeches are preserved, together with three sets of Tetralogies (four hypothetical paired speeches), whose authenticity is sometimes doubted. Fragments also survive of intellectual treatises on subjects including justice, law, and nature (physis), which are often attributed to a separate Antiphon the Sophist. Were these two Antiphons really one and the same individual, endowed with a wide-ranging mind ready to tackle most of the diverse intellectual interests of his day? Through an analysis of all these writings, this book convincingly argues that they were composed by a single individual, Antiphon the Athenian. Michael Gagarin sets close readings of individual works within a wider discussion of the fifth-century Athenian intellectual climate and the philosophical ferment known as the sophistic movement. This enables him to demonstrate the overall coherence of Antiphon's interests and writings and to show how he was a pivotal figure between the sophists and the Attic orators of the fourth century. In addition, Gagarin's argument allows us to reassess the work of the sophists as a whole, so that they can now be seen as primarily interested in logos (speech, argument) and as precursors of fourth-century rhetoric, rather than in their usual role as foils for Plato

Während sich die Vorstellung der Altersweisheit in der antiken Literatur als stabil und variabel zugleich erwies, blieb deren systematische Untersuchung in der Forschung bisher lückenhaft. Die Dissertation gibt nicht nur einen Überblick über die Bedeutungsnuancen der antiken Weisheitsvorstellung und die variablen Altersbilder, sondern beschäftigt sich besonders mit der Frage, inwiefern die spätantiken Bischöfe Ambrosius und Paulinus pagane und biblische Traditionen zur Vorstellung der Altersweisheit aufgreifen und zu christlichen Konzepten umarbeiten. Mögliche Kontinuitäten, Modifikationen und Neuerungen im Umgang mit den tradierten Motiven werden so als spezifisch spätantik-christlich eruiert. Beide Bischöfe trugen zur Etablierung der christianisierten Verknüpfung von sapientia und senectus bei, sodass die Konstruktion der Altersweisheit auch in der Spätantike zu einem Stück antiker Geistesgeschichte wurde, anhand derer sich gesellschaftliche und sprachliche, philosophische und religiöse Konventionen, Strömungen und Wandlungen nachzeichnen lassen Old age and wisdom have been closely linked since the beginnings of human culture and theological-philosophical reflection. The volume details ancient notions about the wisdom of age and also identifies specific Christian nuances from late antiquity. Herodotus and the Question Why offers a comprehensive examination of the methods behind the Histories and the challenge of documenting human experiences, from the Persian Wars to cultural traditions.     "When John J. Winkler died in 1990, he left a substantially complete manuscript containing the final version of the project he had undertaken in the last decade of his life: an original interpretation of the development and meaning of ancient Greek drama. That manuscript was based on The Martin Classical Lectures at Oberlin College, which Winkler delivered in September of 1988. The present text has been edited and updated by classicists David Halperin, Winkler's literary executor, and Kirk Ormand, Winkler's student and an expert on Greek drama. Rehearsals of Manhood, the final work of a widely recognized and celebrated classical scholar, proposes an entirely new account of Greek drama providing an explanation of the social place of Greek drama and its relation to the gendered organization of Athenian social life. Winkler interprets drama as a secular manhood ritual, a public aesthetic undertaking focused on the initiation of boys into manhood and, specifically, on the training, the display, and the representation of young male warriors. According to Winkler, the chorus of both tragedy and comedy was composed of young Athenian men of citizen status, about eighteen to twenty years of age, who were undergoing military training in order to prepare themselves for the task of warfare; they danced on a rectangular dance floor in a rectangular formation that recalled the arrangement of the infantry phalanx; they accompanied plays that often highlighted scenarios of risk faced by young men on the verge of adulthood; and they performed in a theater whose seating was arranged to display the corporate body of the male citizenry as a whole, both its democratic equality and its hierarchical ranking according to degrees of excellence. Winkler does not offer new interpretations of the texts of Greek plays but a new account of how the very practice of dramatic performance fit into the social life and gender politics of the Athenian state"--

    1899 legte Heinrich Dressel mit Band CIL XV 2, 1 die bis heute verbindliche Grundlage für das Verständnis römischer Amphoren vor. Die zum Seetransport verschiedenster Lebensmittel genutzten Behälter wurden rund um das Mittelmeer hergestellt. Dressel gelang mit seiner Studie von Amphoren vom Monte Testaccio sowie aus Grabungen bei den hortia Torlonia und den castra praetoria in Rom die massgebliche Definition ihrer Formen, Inhalte und Provenienzen. 150 Jahre nach Dressels Arbeiten stellt sich angesichts einer prosperierenden internationalen Amphorenforschung die Frage, ob sich in seinen Untersuchungen noch Neues entdecken lässt. Ausgangspunkt ist ein Nachruf auf Dressel, der ihm - bisher in der Forschung nicht beachtet - eine besondere Methode der Publikation und Abbildung der Aufschriften auf den Amphoren attestierte. Der Band spürt anhand der in der Arbeitsstelle vorhandenen Archivalien zu den tituli picti auf Amphoren aus Rom der Arbeitsweise Dressels und seinem Wissensgewinn nach.     In der athenischen Demokratie waren Reden ein zentraler Bestandteil der gemeinsamen Erinnerungskultur. Während die epitaphioi logoi die Sternstunden der athenischen Myth-Historie feierten, wurde allerdings in den Reden, die die Tagespolitik bestimmten, die gesamte Bandbreite der Erinnerungen angesprochen. Erfolge wie Misserfolge wurden diskutiert, rekonstruiert, die Sicht auf sie verändert und an die aktuelle politische Situation angepasst. In der Studie werden die Vermittlungskontexte der Volksversammlung und der Gerichte in den Mittelpunkt gestellt und die in engerem Sinne politischen Argumentationsstrategien, die auf die rezente sowie weiter entfernte Vergangenheit aufbauten, untersucht. Die öffentliche Darstellung der gemeinsamen Vergangenheit erweist sich hier als ein steter Verhandlungsprozess zwischen persönlichen Anliegen des Redners und den Bedürfnissen der Gemeinschaft, der das Verhältnis zwischen Erinnerungspflicht und Vergessen, Wahrheit und Lüge, Kollektiv und Individuum sowie Gegenwart und Zukunft immer wieder aufs Neue bestimmte. Die Auseinandersetzung mit Geschichte mittels Rede spiegelt deshalb in besonderer Weise die auf öffentliche Streitkultur fußende athenische Demokratie Rhetoric reflects the agonal memory culture of Athenian democracy in a special way: in public meetings and at public trials, peopled made arguments using mythical and historical events, people, and practices, closely interweaving them with the politics of the day. In this volume, the struggle for memory and the interpretation of the joint past is revealed to be a constant process of negotiation between speaker and listeners

Past approaches to these objects have sought to reconstruct their underlying belief system. This book is the first to examine them primarily within the context of early Greek poetry and performance culture. The patterns of thought and expression in the tablets find instructive poetic antecedents and analogies, including in non-canonical and inscribed genres that are not included in conventional descriptions of the poetic tradition. Applying a range of analytical approaches from the fields of epigraphy, anthropology, and religious studies, this book ultimately uses the tablets to cast more familiar literature in a new light

    In archaic and classical Greece, statues played a constant role in people's religious, political, economic, aesthetic, and mental lives. Evidence of many kinds demonstrates that ancient Greeks thought about--and interacted with--statues in ways very different from our own. This book recovers ancient thinking about statues by approaching them through contemporary literary sources. It not only shows that ancient viewers conceived of images as more operative than aesthetic, but additionally reveals how poets and philosophers found in sculpture a practice ''good to think with.'' Deborah Tarn Steiner considers how Greek authors used images to ponder the relation of a copy to an original and of external appearance to inner reality. For these writers, a sculpture could straddle life and death, encode desire, or occasion reflection on their own act of producing a text. Many of the same sources also reveal how thinking about statues was reflected in the objects' everyday treatment. Viewing representations of gods and heroes as vessels hosting a living force, worshippers ritually washed, clothed, and fed them in order to elicit the numinous presence within. By reading the plastic and verbal sources together, this book offers new insights into classical texts while illuminating the practices surrounding the design, manufacture, and deployment of ancient images. Its argument that images are properly objects of cultural and social--rather than purely aesthetic--study will attract art historians, cultural historians, and anthropologists, as well as classicists

    How can we make sense of the innovative structure of Euripidean drama? And what political role did tragedy play in the democracy of classical Athens? These questions are usually considered to be mutually exclusive, but this book shows that they can only be properly answered together. Providing a new approach to the aesthetics and politics of Greek tragedy, Victoria Wohl argues that the poetic form of Euripides' drama constitutes a mode of political thought. Through readings of select plays, she explores the politics of Euripides' radical aesthetics, showing how formal innovation generates political passions with real-world consequences.Euripides' plays have long perplexed readers. With their disjointed plots, comic touches, and frequent happy endings, they seem to stretch the boundaries of tragedy. But the plays' formal traits-from their exorbitantly beautiful lyrics to their arousal and resolution of suspense-shape the audience's political sensibilities and ideological attachments. Engendering civic passions, the plays enact as well as express political ideas. Wohl draws out the political implications of Euripidean aesthetics by exploring such topics as narrative and ideological desire, the politics of pathos, realism and its utopian possibilities, the logic of political allegory, and tragedy's relation to its historical moment.Breaking through the impasse between formalist and historicist interpretations of Greek tragedy, Euripides and the Politics of Form demonstrates that aesthetic structure and political meaning are mutually implicated-and that to read the plays poetically is necessarily to read them politically

    These critically diverse and innovative essays are aimed at restoring the social context of ancient Greek drama. Theatrical productions, which included music and dancing, were civic events in honor of the god Dionysos and were attended by a politically stratified community, whose delegates handled all details from the seating arrangements to the qualifications of choral competitors. The growing complexity of these performances may have provoked the Athenian saying "nothing to do with Dionysos" implying that theater had lost its exclusive focus on its patron. This collection considers how individual plays and groups of dramas pertained to the concerns of the body politic and how these issues were presented in the convention of the stage and as centerpieces of civic ceremonies.     The link between weddings and death-as found in dramas ranging from Romeo and Juliet to Lorca's Blood Wedding-plays a central role in the action of many Greek tragedies. Female characters such as Kassandra, Antigone, and Helen enact and refer to significant parts of wedding and funeral rites, but often in a twisted fashion. Over time the pressure of dramatic events causes the distinctions between weddings and funerals to disappear. In this book, Rush Rehm considers how and why the conflation of the two ceremonies comes to theatrical life in the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophokles, and Euripides. By focusing on the dramatization of important rituals conducted by women in ancient Athenian society, Rehm offers a new perspective on Greek tragedy and the challenges it posed for its audience.The conflation of weddings and funerals, the author argues, unleashes a kind of dramatic alchemy whereby female characters become the bearers of new possibilities. Such as formulation enables the tragedians to explore the limitations of traditional thinking and acting in fifth-century Athens. Rehm finds that when tragic weddings and funerals become confused and perverted, the aftershocks disturb the political and ideological givens of Athenian society, challenging the audience to consider new, and often radically different, directions for their city.Rush Rehm is Assistant Professor of Drama and Classics at Standford University and a free-lance theater director. The poem tells how Hades, lord of the underworld, abducted the goddess Persephone and how her grieving mother, Demeter, the goddess of grain, forced the gods to allow Persephone to return to her for part of each year.
