    Diversifying the workforce is becoming increasingly important, with gender equality being a central feature of overall equality. Men seem to be part of the problem and a necessary part of the solution. This collection ties these themes together in the context of talent management and organizational effectiveness. -- Talented women continue to have difficulty advancing their careers in organizations wordwide. Organizations and their cultures were created by men, for men and reflect the wider patriarchal society. As a consequence, some women are disadvantaged and face barriers to advancement.     Women have historically been excluded from combat roles in state militaries. However, in recent years, women’s growing involvement in combat roles has sparked public debate. Currently, only a small minority of countries allow women into their ground combat forces. Given the policy relevance, it is important to examine the conditions under which militaries will allow women into combat roles. Using data from 1970–2016, I empirically examine how a variety of aspects of women’s participation in social, political, and economic activities and institutions affects the probability that combat roles will be opened to them. The results provide robust evidence that women’s participation in politics, civil society, and economic activities are associated with a higher probability that these exclusionary policies are lifted from combat roles. However, I do not find evidence of an association between expectations pertaining to women’s familial roles and the probability of combat positions being opened to them. Históricamente, se ha excluido a las mujeres de las funciones de combate en los ejércitos estatales. Sin embargo, en los últimos años, la creciente participación de las mujeres en las funciones de combate ha generado un debate póblico. En la actualidad, solo en una pequeña minoría de países se permite que las mujeres formen parte de las fuerzas de combate terrestre. Dada la relevancia política, es importante analizar las condiciones en las que los ejércitos permiten que las mujeres desempeñen funciones de combate. Mediante el empleo de datos de 1970 a 2016, analizo empíricamente la forma en que diversos aspectos de la participación de las mujeres en instituciones y actividades de índole social, político y económico influyen en la probabilidad de que puedan desempeñar funciones de combate. Los resultados proporcionan pruebas contundentes de que la participación de las mujeres en la política, la sociedad civil y las actividades económicas se asocia con una mayor probabilidad de que dichas políticas de exclusión se eliminen de las funciones de combate. Sin embargo, no encuentro pruebas de una asociación entre las expectativas relativas a los roles familiares de las mujeres y la probabilidad de que ocupen posiciones de combate. Les femmes ont historiquement été exclues des rôles de combat dans les armées d’État. Cependant, ces dernières années, l’implication croissante des femmes dans des rôles de combat a déclenché un débat public. Actuellement, seule une petite minorité de pays autorisent les femmes dans leurs forces de combat au sol. Dans un souci de pertinence politique, il est important d’examiner les conditions dans lesquelles les armées autoriseront les femmes à endosser des rôles de combat. J’ai utilisé des données datant de 1970 à 2016 pour étudier empiriquement la manière dont divers aspects de la participation des femmes aux activités et institutions sociales, politiques et économiques affectent la probabilité que des rôles de combat leur soient rendus accessibles. Mes conclusions fournissent des preuves solides que la participation des femmes aux activités politiques, économiques et de la société civile est associée à une plus grande probabilité que ces politiques d’exclusion affectant les rôles de combat soient abandonnées. Je ne parviens toutefois pas à trouver des preuves d’une association entre les attentes relatives aux rôles familiaux des femmes et la probabilité que des postes de combat leur soient accessibles.

    En las últimas décadas se han evidenciado importantes avances en la participación de mujeres en diferentes niveles del sistema científico a nivel mundial. El más significativo de ellos es el crecimiento de las matrículas de educación terciaria. En la década de 1970 las mujeres eran minoría en las matrículas de educación terciaria a nivel mundial, diez años después las tasas de matriculación de mujeres alcanzan y superan la de los hombres en América del Norte y Europa Occidental, veinte años después, en los noventa, lo hacen en América Latina y el Caribe y actualmente en algunos países de Asia central. A pesar de estos avances aún persisten significativas brechas de género en los mercados laborales en general, y dentro de los sistemas científicos y tecnológicos en particular.Una amplia diversidad de informes ha constatado la expresión de estas brechas en el sistema científico a nivel mundial, tanto para países desarrollados como para países en desarrollo. Sin embargo, la literatura de referencia destaca que la expresión de estas brechas de género y sus causas varía según áreas de conocimiento y según contextos. Preguntarse por las causas de la participación desigual de varones y mujeres particularmente en las neurociencias es de especial importancia dado que se trata de un campo de conocimiento en expansión, con una alta demanda y potencial impacto sobre el bienestar y desarrollo social.     The COVID-19 pandemic has upended health and living standards around the world. This article provides an interim overview of these effects, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Economists have explained how the pandemic is likely to have differential consequences for LMICs, and demand distinct policy responses, compared to rich countries. We survey the rapidly expanding body of empirical research that documents its many adverse economic and non-economic effects in terms of living standards, education, health, and gender equality, which appear to be unprecedented in depth and scale. We also review research on successful and failed policy responses, including the failure to ensure widespread vaccine coverage in LMICs, which is needed to end the pandemic. We close with a discussion of implications for public policy in LMICs, and for the institutions of international governance, given the likelihood of future pandemics and other major shocks (e.g., climate)

It unearths, critiques, reviews, analyses, theorizes, synthesizes and evaluates African women’s historical, social, political, economic, local and global lives and experiences with a view to decolonizing the corpus. This Handbook questions the gendered roles and positions of African women and the structures, institutions, and processes of policy, politics, and knowledge production that continually construct, deconstruct, and reconstruct African women and the study of them. Contributors offer a consistent emphasis on debunking erroneous and misleading myths about African women's roles and positions, bringing their previously marginalized stories to relief, and ultimately re-writing their histories. Thus, this Handbook enlarges the scope of the field, challenges its orthodoxies, and engenders new subjects, theories, and approaches.     This publication recommends actions to enable the machineries for the advancement of women to strengthen gender mainstreaming in public policy instruments and implementation actions in relation to climate change. This would enable the lead agencies and managers responsible for the implementation of public policies on behalf of gender equality and women’s autonomy to become more actively involved, and to play a transformative leadership role in the climate change response, both nationally and internationally. The objectives are to ensure that gender equality and the autonomy of all women and girls, in their diversity, are prioritized and comprehensively addressed in the climate change actions deployed both nationally and regionwide; and to enable women to participate fully as climate actors, bolstering their resilience and that of their communities to fulfil the 2030 Agenda and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.The document is also addressed to the institutions that form the gender architecture in the different branches and levels of government, along with civil society entities, especially feminist organizations, academic sectors, and, in general, all sectors interested and involved in promoting public policies in response to climate change and the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
