    Charles Cushman (1896-1972) photographed a disappearing world in living color. Cushman's midcentury America--a place normally seen only through a scrim of gray--reveals itself as a place as vivid and real as the view through our window. The Day in Its Color introduces readers to Cushman's extraordinary work, a recently unearthed archive of photographs that is the largest known body of early color photographs by a single photographer, 14,500 in all, most shot on vivid, color-saturated Kodachrome stock. From 1938-1969, Cushman--a sometime businessman and amateur photographer with an uncanny eye for everyday detail--travelled constantly, shooting everything he encountered as he ventured from New York to New Orleans, Chicago to San Francisco, and everywhere in between. His photos include portraits, ethnographic studies, agricultural and industrial landscapes, movie sets and media events, children playing, laborers working, and thousands of street scenes, all precisely documented in time and place.     This book provides an overview of various application spheres and supports further innovations needed in information management and in the processes of knowledge generation. The professions, organizations and scientific associations involved are unusually challenged by the complexity of the data situation. Cartography has always been the central field of application for georeferencing digital cultural heritage (DCH) objects. It is particularly important in enabling spatial relation analysis between any number of DCH objects or of their granular details. In addition to the pure geometric aspects, the cognitive relations that lead to knowledge representation and derivation of innovative use processes are also of increasing importance. Further, there is a societal demand for spatial reference and analytics (e.g. the extensive use of cognitive concepts of "map" and "atlas" for a variety of social topics in the media). There is a huge geometrical-logical-cognitive potential for complex, multimedia, digital-cultural-heritage databases and stakeholders expect handling, transmission and processing operations with guaranteed long-term availability for all other stakeholders. In the future, whole areas of digital multimedia databases will need to be processed to further our understanding of historical and cultural contexts. This is an important concern for the information society and presents significant challenges for cartography in all these domains.This book collects innovative technical and scientific work on the entire process of object digitization, including detail extraction, archiving and interoperability of multimedia DCH data

    A close look behind the scenes of the boardrooms: interpretations of the actions of managers (and logics related to space) versus the cultural-spatial »other« in the context of international corporate takeovers Deutungen der Wirklichkeit stellen nicht nur ein Ergebnis soziokultureller Prägung dar, sondern geben zugleich Aufschluss über Dynamiken gesellschaftlicher Prozesse. Die basalen Deutungsmuster der Wirklichkeit weisen zudem Raumbezüge auf, die im Zentrum dieser Untersuchung von Unternehmensübernahmen (Mergers & Acquisitions, M&A) stehen. Denn auch unternehmerisches Handeln, das oftmals als »Black Box« erscheint, unterliegt gesellschaftlicher Prägung.Martin Schalljos objektiv-hermeneutische Rekonstruktion der Dynamik von Nähe- und Distanzproduktionen in länderübergreifenden M&A verspricht sowohl eine Vertiefung der theoretischen Perspektive auf Managerhandeln im globalen Kontext als auch wertvolle Erkenntnisse für eine praxisnahe Sichtweise auf transnationale Kooperationen und kulturelle Faktoren, die bei M&A zum Tragen kommen
