    Despite the recent increase in research on the history of the system of German cooperative banks, the middle tier of the three-level cooperative system has remained a blind spot. The lack of sources has been alleviated by the discovery of the long forgotten archive collection I. HA, Rep. 177 of the Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz, which contains the business files of the Preußische Zentralgenossenschaftskasse (Preußenkasse), as well as records of the Prussian Ministry of Agriculture, which had previously gone unnoticed. Using the Poznan cooperative system as an example, the following article shows the potential that lies in a more intensive analysis of the regional cooperative organizations. Such analyses would not only provide new insights into the creation, development and competition of regional associations. They would also enable new insights into the networking of cooperatives with other organizations and movements, into conflicts arising from the development of a new economic infrastructure and into the social profile of the actors involved, about whom little is known at present. The study of the cooperative system in Poznan shows how important a history of the influence of the Preußenkasse as the central agricultural instrument of Prussia would be. The bank derived its influence not only from its founding motives or business policy, but also to a large extent from local circumstances and local actors.

    We study three centuries of U.K. fiscal history. Before WW-I, when the U.K. dominated global bond markets, the U.K.'s government debt was not always fully backed by its future surpluses, even after accounting for the seigniorage revenue from convenience yields. As predicted by theories of safe asset determination, investors concentrate extra fiscal capacity in a single country, the global safe asset supplier, based on relative macro fundamentals, and its debt growth may temporarily outstrip what is warranted by its own macro fundamentals. After the relative deterioration in U.K. fundamentals, due to the run-up in debt during WW-I and WW-II, bond investors focused exclusively on the U.K's own macro fundamentals. Since then the U.K. debt has been fully backed by surpluses

    The fiscal theory states that inflation adjusts so that the real value of government debt equals the present value of real primary surpluses. Monetary policy remains important. The central bank can set an interest rate target, which determines the path of expected inflation, while news about the present value of surpluses drives unexpected inflation. I use fiscal theory to interpret historical episodes, including the rise and fall of inflation in the 1970s and 1980s, the long quiet zero bound of the 2010s, and the reemergence of inflation in 2021, as well as to analyze the gold standard, currency pegs, the ends of hyperinflations, currency crashes, and the success of inflation targets. Going forward, fiscal theory warns that inflation will have to be tamed by coordinated monetary and fiscal policy.     Die Commerzbank, 1870 von Kaufleuten und Privatbankiers in Hamburg gegründet, widmete sich zunächst der Finanzierung des Außenhandels und der mittelständischen Wirtschaft, ehe sie im Verlauf des 20. Jahrhunderts zu einer führenden, international agierenden Geschäftsbank aufstieg. Anhand vieler, zum Teil bisher unerschlossener archivalischer Quellen beschreiben Stephan Paul, Friederike Sattler und Dieter Ziegler den Weg der Bank von den Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart. Sie widmen sich dabei den Erschütterungen durch die Finanzkrisen 1931/32 und 2008/09 ebenso wie den Herausforderungen der Digitalisierung des Bankgeschäfts in jüngster Zeit: ein faszinierendes Kapitel deutscher Wirtschaftsgeschichte.

    The extent of fiscal transparency in Western Europe has varied over the centuries. Although ancient Greek, Roman, and medieval governments were sometimes open about their finances, the absolute monarchies of the 1600s and 1700s shrouded them in mystery. Factors that have encouraged transparency include (i) the sharing of political power and rulers’ need to persuade creditors to lend and taxpayers’ representatives to approve new taxes; (ii) the spread of technological innovations that reduce the costs of storing and transmitting information; and (iii) the acceptance of political theories that emphasize accountable government and public discussion of government policy

    This paper presents new monthly capital gains, dividend yield, and total return indices for common equities quoted on British stock exchanges from 1829 to 1929. As well as creating an all-share index, we create a blue-chip index of the 30 largest companies, which we splice to the Financial Times 30 index to create a near-two-century-long (1829-2018) monthly share index. We use the new indices to examine the timing of British business cycles and compare the returns on home and foreign UK investment. We also construct indices for 22 domestic sectors, and calculate CAPM betas for each sector.

    We consider public debt from a long-term historical perspective, showing how the purposes for which governments borrow have evolved over time. Periods when debt-to-GDP ratios rose explosively as a result of wars, depressions and financial crises also have a long history. Many of these episodes resulted in debt-management problems resolved through debasements and restructurings. Less widely appreciated are successful debt consolidation episodes, instances in which governments inheriting heavy debts ran primary surpluses for long periods in order to reduce those burdens to sustainable levels. We analyze the economic and political circumstances that made these successful debt consolidation episodes possible

    Der Editionsband „Die Hoffinanzierung in der preußischen Monarchie von 1786 bis 1918“ legt die Finanzquellen und Ausgabenbereiche des preußischen Hofes im 19. Jahrhundert offen und beleuchtet wichtige Aspekte der preußischen und Monarchiegeschichte wie die Separierung von staatlichen und höfischen Finanzen im Zuge der Konstitutionalisierung und die Ausweitung monarchischer Repräsentation seit Ende des Jahrhunderts. Der Band präsentiert eine facettenreiche Auswahl von 356 bisher unveröffentlichten Dokumenten aus dem Geheimen Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz, die in gewohnter Sorgfalt durch die Experten für preußische Geschichte an der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften editorisch erschlossen wurden. Die umfangreiche analytische Einleitung zur Edition bietet erstmals einen Überblick über Strukturen, Praktiken und quantitative Ausmaße der Finanzierung des preußischen Hofes und der Herrscherfamilie vom Tod Friedrichs II. bis zum Untergang der Monarchie 1918.

    "John Law's System was a radical restructuring of French public finances, carried out from 1716 to 1720. It involved on the one hand a conversion of the existing French public debt into something like government equity, on the other hand the replacement of commodity money with fiat money. For strategic reasons, Law supported the equity at too high a level, resulting in uncontrolled money creation.     During the Civil War the Arkansas legislature funded their expenditures primarily through interest-bearing warrants and war bonds. After these issues were made legal tender in November 1861, the discount attributed to them disappeared immediately and they began to circulate widely. By mid- 1862 they appeared to be preferred to Confederate notes - which were also made legal tender in November 1861 but required military intervention to support their acceptance. The widespread circulation and potential dominance of legal tender interest-bearing currency is consistent with legal restrictions theory.
