Heroism has long been recognised by readers and critics of Roman epic as a central theme of the genre from Virgil and Ovid to Lucan and Statius. However the crucial role female characters play in the constitution and negotiation of the heroism on display in epic has received scant attention in the critical literature. This study represents an attempt to restore female characters to visibility in Roman epic and to examine the discursive operations that effect their marginalisation within both the genre and the critical tradition it has given rise to. The five chapters can be read either as self-contained essays or as a cumulative exploration of the gender dynamics of the Roman epic tradition. The issues addressed are of interest not just to classicists but also to students of gender studies

Current feminist theory has developed powerful explanations for some women writers' rebellion against patriarchy. But other women writers did not rebel; rather, they supported and celebrated patriarchy. Examining the lives and selected works of two late eighteenth-century writers, Hannah More and Maria Edgeworth, this book explores what it means for a woman writer to identify with her father and the patriarchal tradition he represents. Kowaleski-Wallace exposes the psychological, social, and historical factors that motivated such an identification, and reveals the consequences that result from

"Understanding Gloria Naylor introduces readers to the literal and mythical places, recurring characters, and rich literary allusions that distinguish Naylor's award-winning fiction. Margaret Earley Whitt offers a thorough introduction to Naylor's first five novels, underscoring the passion with which Naylor writes about women living on the margins of their communities. Whitt discloses how Naylor tells the stories of these women on multiple levels and how she helps readers see that all heroines live a life of significance." "Tracing Naylor's development of the theme of black community, especially among women, Whitt shows how characters move from poverty and isolation to a place where they transcend the racism and sexism that constrict their lives."--Jacket Understanding Gloria Naylor -- The women of Brewster Place -- Linden Hills -- Mama Day -- Bailey's Café -- The men of Brewster Place.

"Understanding Jill McCorkle introduces readers to the novels and short story collections of Jill McCorkle's growing canon. Since 1984 McCorkle has written five novels, including The Cheer Leader and Carolina Moon, and two books of short stories - Crash Diet and Final Vinyl Days and Other Stories - entering the publishing world, as one reviewer noted, "with the literary equivalent of a rebel yell." Filling the gap of critical study on McCorkle, Barbara Bennett analyzes the widely read and admired output of this prolific southern writer. Bennett identifies and discusses the diverse characters, thematic concerns, and keen sense of language that distinguish McCorkle's work."--Jacket Ch. 1. Introduction -- Ch. 2. In this volume, scholarship on Sappho moves beyond a limiting focus on textual reconstruction or analysis of her possible biography to study her as a powerful and influential voice in the Western cultural tradition. Many of the essays presented here mark a turning point in Sappho scholarship, an efflorescence of literary and contextual criticism in which scholars read Sappho's poetry for its literary content and its relation to literary and mythical tradition. The move to assimilate methodologies from other branches of literary and cultural studies is evident, and feminist scholarship and work on gender theory are represented. The aim of this collection is to draw well-deserved attention to Sappho's importance as a poet and to offer a sense of the lively debate and competing critical positions within Sappho studies
