    Das "Repertorium Germanicum" (RG) gehört zu den Pfeilern der am Deutschen Historischen Institut (DHI) Rom betriebenen Grundlagenforschung. In seiner über 100-jährigen Geschichte hat es sich von einem Findmittel zu einem komplexen Regestenwerk zur Kirchen- und Kuriengeschichte entwickelt, das - in Verbindung mit dem Tochterunternehmen "Repertorium Poenitentiariae Germanicum" (RPG) - gestiegenen Ansprüchen gerecht wird. Der Sammelband greift neue Fragestellungen an die Repertorien auf. Die Auswahl reicht von Netzwerkanalysen bis hin zu kulturgeschichtlichen Themen wie Heraldik und Gerontologie. Gezeigt wird auch der Nutzen für die Erhellung grenzüberschreitender Verflechtungen und die methodische Reflexion historischer Elitenforschung. Die neuen digitalen Techniken sowie die Zusammenarbeit mit der "Germania Sacra" und dem "Repertorium Academicum Germanicum" eröffnen weitere Potentiale für künftige Forschungen. No longer a mere finding aid, the Repertorium Germanicum has become a complex register volume on church and curia history that, together with the sub-project Repertorium Poenitentiariae Germanicum, aims to meet ever increasing demands.     Lange Zeit hat man Reiseberichte vor allem mit Blick auf Alteritätserfahrungen gelesen. Lohnend ist aber auch der Fokus auf implizite Zukunftsvorstellungen, mit dem der Autor den Reisebericht des Hieronymus Münzer über seine Westeuropareise 1494/95 betrachtet: Aus diesem kulturgeschichtlich einzigartigen Itinerarium lassen sich die Perspektiven einer Zeitenwende vielfältig erschließen. So wird die Frage, inwieweit Reiseberichte vorhandene Wissensbestände erweiterten, hier auch mit Blick auf praktisches Handlungswissen gestellt. Der Autor interessiert sich außerdem für die Verknüpfungen: Wissenschaftliche und bildungsbestimmte Anliegen, kaufmännische, diplomatische, religiöse und repräsentative Aspekte zeigen, wie vielfältig die Motivationen des Arztes und Humanisten Münzer schon beim Aufbruch gewesen sein mögen. Zudem wird deutlich, welch vielfältige Netzwerke Münzer während der Reise aufbaute und nutzte, um neue Perspektiven zu entwickeln

    Kaiser Ludwig IV. mit dem Beinamen "der Bayer" regierte mehr als eine Generation lang. Dabei stand er in vielen Konflikten mit konkurrierenden Dynastien und dem Papsttum. Zu seiner Strategie gehörte dabei, durch Privilegerteilung insbesondere im Bund mit aufstrebenden Städten im Reich (wie Nürnberg, Frankfurt am Main oder Augsburg) Verbündete und Finanzmittel zu erlangen. Adressatenspezifisch erfolgte in diesem Kontext die Ausstellung von Privilegien und Urkunden, nicht mehr in Latein, sondern zunehmend in der Volkssprache - und dies durchaus massenhaft. Die sehr zahlreichen (und bislang weitgehend unerforschten) deutschsprachigen Urkunden Ludwigs des Bayern stellen im Rahmen der Königs- und Kaiserurkunden ein Novum dar, das man bisher übersehen hatte. Der Sammelband beleuchtet daher erstmals unter interdisziplinärer Vorgehensweise systematisch Ludwig den Bayern als entscheidenden Beiträger für die Ausbildung der neuhochdeutschen Schriftsprache im europäischen Kontext

    This book addresses a little-considered aspect of the study of the history of emotions in medieval literature: the depiction of perplexing emotional reactions. Medieval literature often confronts audiences with displays of emotion that are improbable, physiologically impossible, or simply unfathomable in modern social contexts. The intent of such episodes is not always clear; medieval texts rarely explain emotional responses or their motivations. The implication is that the meanings communicated by such emotional display were so obvious to their intended audience that no explanation was required. This raises the question of whether such meanings can be recovered. This is the task to which the contributors to this book have put themselves. In approaching this question, this book does not set out to be a collection of literary studies that treat portrayals of emotion as simple tropes or motifs, isolated within their corpora. Rather, it seeks to uncover how such manifestations of feeling may reflect cultural and social dynamics underlying vernacular literatures from across the medieval North Sea world

    This book brings together several strands of medieval and medievalist work in the history of emotions, with a focus on literary, historical and cinema studies. It asks how we may best 'face up' to work that has been done already in these fields, and speculates about work that might yet be done, especially by medievalists working across medieval and postmedieval sources. In the idiom 'facing up,' its editors evoke the impulse to assess and realize the place of medieval studies in the burgeoning field of emotions research. Conceptually, psychologically, and artistically, the face is perceived as being at the forefront of many human interactions and emotional practices - as such, the face is not only a powerful conceptual site for theorizing human relationships, past and present, or a site for the representation of emotion: it is itself a catalyst for feeling. As such, the contributions gathered here provide a cutting-edge reflection on the history of medieval emotions

    This book gathers contributions negotiating feminism's place within medieval studies. It is about overlaps and twists, about the inseparability of multiple means of critique - ecocriticism and disability studies, art history and race studies, legal history and modern activism - from a feminist perspective. The feminist scholarship in this book moves in many different directions and examines the medieval past (and its role in the present) from many different angles. What remains consistent throughout is the dedication to reconfiguring medieval studies, a commitment not to be content simply with adding women on as an extra in conventional European patriarchal accounts, or with analyzing gender in history or literature without fundamentally re-envisioning the intellectual foundations upon which those fields of study have been built. Sie dienen als natürliche Grenzen, formen den Charakter einer Landschaft und prägen das Bild ganzer Regionen. Für die Wahrnehmung eines geografischen Raumes spielen Flüsse daher eine ganz wesentliche Rolle, und sie sind selbst aktiv an der Konstitution von Räumen beteiligt. In politischer Hinsicht sind Flüsse oftmals umkämpfte Grenzen oder Orte kriegerischer Auseinandersetzungen und können zur Projektionsfläche für nationale Diskurse werden. Gleichzeitig bilden sie aber auch Räume des Kontakts, in denen kulturelle Transfer- und Austauschprozesse stattfinden; als solche tragen sie entscheidend zur Herausbildung von Raumkulturen bzw. zur Entstehung von Kulturräumen bei. Die Vielfalt der Flusslandschaften zu umreißen und zugleich den Begriff zu konturieren, ist ein Ziel des vorliegenden Bandes

    Deanne Williams offers the very first study of the medieval and early modern girl actor. Whereas previous histories of the actress begin with the Restoration, this book demonstrates that the girl is actually a well-documented category of performer and a key participant in the drama of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It explores evidence of the girl actor in archival records of payment, eyewitness accounts, stage directions, paintings, and in the plays and masques that were explicitly composed for girls, and, in some cases, by them.Contradicting previous scholarly assumptions about the early modern stage as male-dominated, this evidence reveals girls participation in medieval religious drama, Tudor civic pageants and royal entries, Elizabethan country house entertainments, and Stuart court and household masques. This book situates its historical study of the girl actor within the wider contexts of 'girl culture', including girls as singers, translators and authors. By examining the impact of the girl actor on constructions of girlhood in the work of Shakespeare - whose girl characters register and evoke the power of the performing girl - Girl Culture in the Middle Ages and Renaissance argues that girls dramatic, musical and literary performances actively shaped medieval and early modern culture. It shows how the active presence and participation of girls shaped medieval and Renaissance culture, and it reveals how some of its best-known literary and dramatic texts address, represent, and reflect upon girl children, not as an imagined ideal, but as a lived reality

    Although it is fashionable among modernists to claim that globalism emerged only since ca. 1800, the opposite can well be documented through careful comparative and transdisciplinary studies, as this volume demonstrates, offering a wide range of innovative perspectives on often neglected literary, philosophical, historical, or medical documents. Texts, images, ideas, knowledge, and objects migrated throughout the world already in the pre-modern world, even if the quantitative level compared to the modern world might have been different. In fact, by means of translations and trade, for instance, global connections were established and maintained over the centuries. Archetypal motifs developed in many literatures indicate how much pre-modern people actually shared. But we also discover hard-core facts of global economic exchange, import of exotic medicine, and, on another level, intensive intellectual debates on religious issues. Literary evidence serves best to expose the extent to which contacts with people in foreign countries were imaginable, often desirable, and at times feared, of course. The pre-modern world was much more on the move and reached out to distant lands out of curiosity, economic interests, and political and military concerns. Diplomats crisscrossed the continents, and artists, poets, and craftsmen traveled widely. We can identify, for instance, both the Vikings and the Arabs as global players long before the rise of modern globalism, so this volume promises to rewrite many of our traditional notions about pre-modern worldviews, economic conditions, and the literary sharing on a global level, as perhaps best expressed by the genre of the fable
