    The Loss of Sadness argues that the increased prevalence of major depressive disorder is due not to a genuine rise in mental disease, as many claim, but to the way that normal human sadness has been "pathologised" since 1980. In that year, the field of psychiatry published its landmark third edition of The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) which has since become a dominant force behind our current understanding of mental illness overall. As concerns at least major depression, the authors argue that the DSM's definition of the condition is too narrow and that as a result virtually all research on and all clinical approaches to the condition have been based on a flawed understanding about it.The social, political, and scientific implications of this 25-year phenomenon are far-reaching - from the overselling of antidepressants to treat what is ordinary sadness, as Big Pharma exploits the DSM for its own purposes; to intrusive and expensive depression-screening programs at all levels of society, as well-meaning but misguided initiatives translate the DSM into simple terms to catch any whiff of depressive pathology in our midst; to funded reseach into the "

    Depressive (Anti-)Helden besiedeln die aktuelle französische Literaturlandschaft. In der Studie werden diese philologisch verortet und paradigmatische Texte von Philippe Labro, Antoine Sénanque, Philippe Delerm, Édouard Levé, Michel Houellebecq und Thierry Beinstingel in ihrer Ästhetik als spezifisch wissenspoetologischer Beitrag erschlossen – um so Dynamiken der Depression literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlich zu ergründen. Ziel ist es konkret, medizinische und psychoanalytische Narrative in der Literatur zu sondieren, zudem wird untersucht, inwieweit Literatur ergänzende, aber auch divergierende Sichtweisen zu diesem Wissen bieten kann. Depressive (anti-)heroes populate the current French literary landscape to a significant extent. In this study, such characters are located philologically, and paradigmatic texts by Philippe Labro, Antoine Sénanque, Philippe Delerm, Édouard Levé, Michel Houellebecq and Thierry Beinstingel are analysed in terms of their aesthetics as a specific contribution to poetological knowledge in order to fathom the dynamics of depression in literary and cultural studies. Specifically, the study aims to explore medical and psychoanalytical narratives in literature and to examine the extent to which literature can offer complementary but also divergent perspectives on this knowledge.

    This collection of essays examines the motifs of darkness, depression, and descent in both literal and figurative manifestations within a variety of Anglo-Saxon texts, including the Old English Consolation of Philosophy, Beowulf, Guthlac, The Junius Manuscript, The Wonders of the East, and The Battle of Maldon. Essays deal with such topics as cosmic emptiness, descent into the grave, and recurrent grief. In their analyses, the essays reveal the breadth of this imagery in Anglo-Saxon literature as it is used to describe thought and emotion, as well as the limits to knowledge and perception. The volume investigates the intersection between the burgeoning interest in trauma studies and darkness and the representation of the mind or of emotional experience within Anglo-Saxon literature

Through penetrating readings of texts from Aristotle to Kristeva, she illuminates the complex history of the symbolics of loss in Renaissance literature.The pantheon of renowned melancholics—from Shakespeare's Hamlet to Walter Benjamin—includes no women, an absence that in Juliana Schiesari's view points less to a dearth of unhappy women in patriarchal culture than to the lack of significance accorded to women's grief. Through penetrating readings of texts from Aristotle to Kristeva, she illuminates the complex history of the symbolics of loss in Renaissance literature.Schiesari first considers the development of the concept of melancholia in the writings of Freud and then surveys recent responses by such theorists as Luce Irigaray, KaJa Silverman, and Julia Kristeva. Schiesari provides fresh interpretations of works by Aristotle, Hildegard of Bingen, and Ficino and she considers women's poetry of the Italian Renaissance, key works by Tasso and Shakespeare, and the writings of Walter Benjamin and Jacques Lacan. According to Schiesari, male melancholia was celebrated during the Renaissance as a sign of inspired genius, at the same time as public rituals of mourning led by women were suppressed.The Gendering of Melancholia will be stimulating reading for scholars and students in the fields of feminist criticism, psychoanalytic and literary theory, and Renaissance studies, and for anyone interested in Western cultural history

    Depressive (Anti-)Helden besiedeln die aktuelle französische Literaturlandschaft. In der Studie werden diese philologisch verortet und paradigmatische Texte von Philippe Labro, Antoine Sénanque, Philippe Delerm, Édouard Levé, Michel Houellebecq und Thierry Beinstingel in ihrer Ästhetik als spezifisch wissenspoetologischer Beitrag erschlossen – um so Dynamiken der Depression literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlich zu ergründen. Ziel ist es konkret, medizinische und psychoanalytische Narrative in der Literatur zu sondieren, zudem wird untersucht, inwieweit Literatur ergänzende, aber auch divergierende Sichtweisen zu diesem Wissen bieten kann. Depressive (anti-)heroes populate the current French literary landscape to a significant extent. In this study, such characters are located philologically, and paradigmatic texts by Philippe Labro, Antoine Sénanque, Philippe Delerm, Édouard Levé, Michel Houellebecq and Thierry Beinstingel are analysed in terms of their aesthetics as a specific contribution to poetological knowledge in order to fathom the dynamics of depression in literary and cultural studies. Specifically, the study aims to explore medical and psychoanalytical narratives in literature and to examine the extent to which literature can offer complementary but also divergent perspectives on this knowledge.

    Τhe study examines whether adverse working conditions for immigrants in Greece bear an association with deteriorated physical health and increased levels of depression during 2018 and 2019. Findings indicate that workers with no written contract of employment, receiving hourly wages lower than the national hourly minimum wages, and experiencing insults and/or threats in their present job experience worse physical health and increased levels of depression. The study found that the inexistence of workplace contracts, underpayment, and verbal abuse in the workplace may coexist. An increased risk of underpayment and verbal abuse reveals itself when workers do not have a contract of employment and vice versa. Immigrant workers without a job contract might experience a high degree of workplace precariousness and exclusion from health benefits and insurance. Immigrant workers receiving a wage lower than the corresponding minimum potentially do not secure a living income, resulting in unmet needs and low investments in health. Workplace abuse might correspond with vulnerability related to humiliating treatment. These conditions can negatively impact workers' physical health and foster depression. Policies should promote written employment contracts and ensure a mechanism for workers to register violations of fair practices.

    The Hebrew Scriptures contain relatively few specific lexemes for the concept of despair. In this study I propose that the self-referential expression “woe is me/us” (אוי לי/לנו) provides an alternative pathway for understanding this concept. Building on a detailed analysis of the distribution and grammar of this expression, I analyze six “woes” from Jeremiah that together constitute half of all the self-referential occurrences of אוי (Jer 4:13, 31; 6:4; 10:19; 15:10; 45:3). My exegesis of this corpus focuses on aspects of discourse, communication, and sound, while integrating current insights about despair from the fields of psychology and philosophy. The study thus contributes to the renewed interest in psychological readings of the prophets, the understanding of the overlooked exclamatory particle אוי, and the research on Jeremiah’s polyphony and theology.

    Timo Veijola (1947-2005) is internationally well known because of his numerous studies on Deuteronomy and the Deuteronomistic History. Less known, however, are his contributions to biblical studies that he wrote in his native language Finnish. This article aims to shed light on this part of Veijola’s publications. A characteristic feature in Veijola’s Finnish publications is his endeavor to address his essays to a wider audience, not just for professional biblical scholars. This leads to topics and emphases that sometimes differ from his international studies. For instance, Veijola often examines the reception history of biblical passages in his Finnish essays. Furthermore, he pays attention to the hermeneutics and underlines repeatedly the significance of the Old Testament in the modern world. Veijola was famous for his interest in environmental issues. Due to his own personal experience Veijola attempts to explain to his Finnish readers what depression means as a biblical and present-day phenomenon.
