The argument is supported by interlocking investigations of lexicography, divination, diet, figurines, social history, and religion. There are also extended discussions of Babylonian word play and ancient literary interpretation. Besides arguing for Ea's duplicity, the book explores its implications - for narrative sophistication in Gilgamesh, for audiences and performance of the poem, and for the relation of the Gilgamesh Flood story to the versions in Atra-hasis, the Hellenistic historian Berossos, and the Biblical Book of Genesis.     The biblical tale of Noah and the Flood has been interpreted in many different ways through the ages, mirroring the many changes in Western beliefs and values. In this masterly and beautifully illustrated book, Norman Cohn, the author of The Pursuit of the Millennium and Cosmos, Chaos, and the World to Come, explores the origins, development, and varying interpretations of this ancient story and assesses its impact on the history of ideas.The roots of the Flood story, Cohn explains, lie in Mesopotamian mythology. But its meaning was totally transformed by the authors of Genesis so that it became a message of hope for Jews and later a prefiguring of salvation for Christians. Cohn then shows how, under the impact of the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century, the story came to be understood in a new way. Between the seventeenth and the nineteenth centuries it was closely associated with the development of scientific geology, which it both helped and hindered. From the late eighteenth century until the present it has been involved also in the conflict between traditional religious beliefs and science and the attempts to harmonize the two. Cohn describes how, while geological and palaeontological discoveries were calling the historicity of the Flood into question, fundamentalists have continued to champion it, even to the extent of searching for the landing site of the ark. Finally, he considers how, in the course of the present century, the story has been interpreted as a solar myth, a lunar myth, a fertility myth, and even (psychoanalytically) as an expression of male resentment against women.Wide ranging and compellingly narrated, the book includes intriguing accounts of the scholars and theologians who endorsed or rejected the Flood story and the painters, sculptors, poets, dramatists, and composers who used it as a theme in their work

    "This volume opens up new perspectives on Babylonian and Assyrian literature, through the lens of a pivotal passage in the Gilgamesh Flood story. It shows how, using a nine-line message where not all was as it seemed, the god Ea inveigled humans into building the Ark. The volume argues that Ea used a 'bitextual' message: one which can be understood in different ways that sound the same. His message thus emerges as an ambivalent oracle in the tradition of 'folktale prophecy'. The argument is supported by interlocking investigations of lexicography, divination, diet, figurines, social history, and religion. There are also extended discussions of Babylonian word play and ancient literary interpretation. Besides arguing for Ea's duplicity, the book explores its implications - for narrative sophistication in Gilgamesh, for audiences and performance of the poem, and for the relation of the Gilgamesh Flood story to the versions in Atra-hasis, the Hellenistic historian Berossos, and the Biblical Book of Genesis.     Der biblische Mythos von der Sintflut erzählt nicht nur von einer Katastrophe im Sinne von Schrecken und Strafe, sondern auch von einer Katastrophe des kollektiven Erinnerungsverlustes: Das Gedächtnis der Menscheit mußte sozusagen durch das Nadelöhr der Reduktion auf ein einziges Menschenpaar. Was ging dabei verloren? Was wurde aus dem vollkommenen Wissen Adams und der frühen Patriarchen? Was wurde davon erinnert, überliefert? Und auch von einer anderen Perspektive läßt sich nach der Erinnerung fragen: Wie wurde die Katastrophe der Sintflut selbst erinnert? Wurde ihr Schrecken verdrängt, vergessen? Und lebte das Verdrängte fort, indem es der Kultur der Noachiden um so nachhaltiger seinen Stempel aufprägte? Fragen dieser Art sind keineswegs erst nach Freud gestellt worden. Im 17. und 18. Jh. entwickelte sich eine Aufmerksamkeit für die Sintflut, in der sich naturwissenschaftliche Forschung über Fossilien mit chiliastischer Erwartung, mit der Differenzierung von Esoterik und Exoterik, mit Religionskritik, mit Kulturtheorie und mit politischer Anamnese des Despotismus verband. Boulanger etwa sah die gesamte Kultur der Antike als Bewältigungsversuch einer durch den Sintflut-Schrecken geprägten Menschheit an und deutete die heidnischen Mysterien als Antidotum gegen diesen Schrecken, als >affektive Inversion< einer depressiven Mentalität der Angst. Die im Moses-Diskurs transportierten Themen der Idolatrie, des Gesetzes, der Esoterik, der Umkehr und des Spinozismus - allesamt Schlüsselprobleme der frühen Neuzeit - gehen im Sintflut-Diskurs ihre neuen und eigenen Verbindungen ein. >Sintflut und Gedächtnis< widmet sich der Aufgabe, den gedächtnisgeschichtlichen Aspekt in ihnen herauszuarbeiten. Denn die Sintflut und ihr Vergessen ist in diesen Verbindungen nicht nur das Objekt der Erinnerung, sondern dieses Objekt bringt selbst - das ist die These - eine Reflexion über Vergessen und Erinnern als Grundlagen von Kultur hervor.
