    Abstract This article examines the use and history of the wordplay μαθεῖν-παθεῖν in Greco-Roman literature in order to assess its use in the Epistle to the Hebrews. First, two important studies on the wordplay from the mid-twentieth century are examined in addition to recent Hebrews scholarship. Second, the article surveys Greco-Roman literature, including several texts not previously included in previous scholarship, to explore how this wordplay was used and developed. Finally, the use of μαθεῖν-παθεῖν in Heb 5:8 is investigated in light of its prior use in Greek literature. It is argued that in these two words, the author of Hebrews is able to memorably demonstrate that Jesus participated in the full human condition. This supports the larger argument regarding Jesus’ qualifications for the high priesthood and is put in conversation with his status as the divine Son.

    When working on Rom 9:5, exegetes face a crucial punctuation issue. The challenge consists in determining whether the expression ὁ ὢν ἐπὶ πάντων θεὸς εὐλογητὸς εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας (9:5b) should be read as an independent clause, or, rather, as a relative clause attached with ὁ Χριστὸς τὸ κατὰ σάρκα (9:5a). According to the first option, Paul merely concludes his development with a doxology to God the Father. Following the second line, however, the apostle would make a Christological claim by asserting that Christ is God. The stakes are high since Paul nowhere else in his letters makes a clear claim that Christ is God. This article aims to reconsider this famous crux interpretum in light of ancient colometry, taking into account the principles of colometric structuration described in Greek and Latin rhetorical treatises. Specifically, the author argues that the combined presence of the three so-called Gorgianic figures (parisosis, paromoiosis, and antithesis) supports the case of light punctuation (a comma) between v. 5a and v. 5b, which in turn suggests reading v. 5b as a relative clause that qualifies Christ.

    Rooted in Italian neorealism, Marxist theory, and centuries of Christian art and music, Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Il Vangelo secondo Matteo reactivates the Gospel against the backdrop of Italian Marxism and social life in the mid-twentieth century. Through a hermeneutical reflection, this paper argues for the film as a central moment in the mediation and reception of the Christian story. Pasolini’s transgressive and poetic cinema partakes in and expands a hermeneutical dynamic at the core of the Christian story. The film’s documentary style, political subtexts, and eclectic setting highlight how the Christian story is a lived historical experience and thus does not transcend the social or historical circumstances of its telling and retelling. In a reciprocal encounter, both film and Gospel reveal the Christian story’s multiple textuality. Taking this as its cue, this article explores how Pasolini’s Matthew reveals the role of cinema as a site of hermeneutical and Christological reflection.

    Die Arbeit analysiert die vielfältige Darstellung medialer Prozesse in zwei spätmittelalterlichen ,Liebes- und Abenteuerromanen': Reinfried von Braunschweig und Apollonius von Tyrland. Mit dem Interesse an Medialität schließt sie an einen aktuellen Forschungsschwerpunkt der germanistischen Mediävistik an, durch die Auseinandersetzung mit erzählten medialen Vorgängen setzt sie einen originellen Fokus im Forschungsfeld. Medientheoretisch fundiert und historisch sensibel widmet die Untersuchung sich in close-readings den medialen Formen, die auf der Textebene in Erscheinung treten und mithilfe derer die Figuren Raum-, Zeit-, und Sphärengrenzen kommunikativ überwinden. Beide Texte heben die durch mediale Vorgänge eröffneten Handlungsmöglichkeiten sowie die Relevanz von Medienkompetenz hervor und profilieren literarische Texte selbst als mediale Formen mit besonderen Vermittlungspotentialen. Indem erzählte Mediation jeweils zur Entfaltung narrativer Komplexität und Tiefe genutzt wird, erweist sich in der vergleichenden Betrachtung der Blick auf mediale Phänomene auch als Schlüssel zu der inhaltlichen Schwerpunktsetzung und dem erzählerischen Profil der Einzeltexte This study examines the intense preoccupation with presenting medial processes evidenced in the love-and-adventure romances Reinfried von Braunschweig and Appolonius von Tyrland.     Der vorliegende Band enthält einige neuere sowie bereits veröffentlichte Aufsätze von Frances Young, einer Wissenschaftlerin, die zum frühen Christentum forscht und für ihr Werk Biblical Exegesis and the Formation of Christian Culture bekannt ist. Die hier versammelten Studien befassen sich mit dem Neuen Testament, aber der Ansatz ist oftmals nicht der moderne, historisch-kritische. Stattdessen gewähren sie neue Einblicke durch die patristische Spezialisierung der Autorin, durch methodologische Untersuchungen, durch ihr Interesse an dogmatischem und theologischem Lesen und an der Erforschung des Ursprungs und der Funktion der heiligen Schriften. Die Bedeutsamkeit des Bandes liegt vor allem darin, dass er die äußerst interessanten Veränderungen in der biblischen Hermeneutik in den letzten 50–60 Jahren veranschaulicht. Viele der Aufsätze sind nicht nur für Fachleute sondern auch für fortgeschrittene Studierende und Pfarrer geeignet. This volume consists of previously published articles by Frances Young, a scholar of early Christianity, well-known for her work Biblical Exegesis and the Formation of Christian Culture, together with a few newly composed additions. The studies collected here are concerned with the New Testament, but their approach is often not in the modern historico-critical mode. Rather, they bring new insight through being informed by the author's patristic specialism, by methodological enquiries, by her interest in doctrinal and theological reading, and by exploration of the very nature and function of sacred scriptures. The significance of this volume lies in the way it exemplifies the extraordinarily interesting changes which have taken place in biblical hermeneutics during the last 50–60 years. Many of the essays could be useful, not only to research specialists, but to advanced undergraduates as well as clergy and preachers.

    Timo Eskola konzentriert sich auf die Metaerzählung von Exil und Wiederherstellung und argumentiert auf dieser Grundlage, dass eine post-liberale, erzählende Theologie des Neuen Testaments sowohl konsistent als auch informativ ist. Der Autor kombiniert eine post-New Quest Perspektive auf Jesus mit der eschatologischen Lektüre der Paulusbriefe und stellt damit dar, dass die Kritik, die Jesus am Tempel übte, auf die Eschatologie der Wiederherstellung zielt. Jesus gründet eine priesterliche Gemeinschaft, die erwartet, dass Gottes Jubelfeier mit Jesu Werk beginnt und mit der Predigt des neuen Evangeliums weitergeführt wird. Die Rezeption dieser Botschaft in der nach-österlichen Kirche führte zur Christologie der Wiederauferstehung, die Jesu davidisches Königtum auf Gottes herrlichem Thron verkündete. Sowohl Paulus als auch jüdisch-christliche Lehrer stellten die Gemeinde Christi später als einen neuen Tempel dar, in dem die Gläubigen dem Herrn als Priester des neuen Bundes dienen. Des Weiteren bietet die Eschatologie der Wiederherstellung eine neue Grundlage für das Verständnis von Paulus' Kontrast mit dem Buchstaben des Gesetzes und seiner Lehre der Rechtfertigung. The theory on restoration eschatology proposed by Sanders and Wright provides the cornerstone for Timo Eskola's building up of the premise that the metanarrative of exile and restoration can be used as an explanation when explicating New Testament theology. Jewish texts foretold that the Messiah would end Israel's exile and build for God an eschatological temple wherewith Jesus went on to proclaim the contrast between the corrupt earthly temple and his own heavenly one. This teaching brought to an end the exilic condition which had persisted throughout the centuries.For Jesus, the era starting with John the Baptist was one filled with tribulations and inter-familial strife which saw Israel continue to kill prophets. The implication is that the Son of Man must suffer too in order for peace to reign in Israel, with the resurrection of Jesus representing the end-time enthronement when God is crowned King and those living in slavery to sin are released.The early Christology developed by Jesus' followers presents the Savior as Christ and Ruler of the new kingdom of peace who grants the fruits of restoration to those faithful to him. The author recognizes a direct connection between Jesus' eschatology and early enthronement Christology, and discusses several christological narratives which elaborate on different restoration eschatology features.The metanarrative has shed light on essential features in Second Temple nomism and Pauline concepts about the law. Furthermore, it helps explain the nature of justification and has proven invaluable when interpreting the new community as Christ's temple where the Holy Spirit has returned.

Nachdem Bruce Clark durch eine beispiellose und gründliche Untersuchung des seltenen Verbs antanaplēroō (in 1.24) eine solide exegetische Grundlage geschaffen hat, geht er dieses faszinierende und herausfordernde Problem an. Er stellt die These auf, dass Kol 1 im Einklang mit 2 Kor 5,18–6,4 Paulus als den vollkommen einzigartigen diakonos (»Diener«) der weltweiten ekklesia darstellt und dadurch als jemanden, dessen Leid auf einzigartige Weise das Leiden Christi vollendet, so dass sie gemeinsam die Rechtschaffenheit Gottes entdecken und die göttliche Versöhnung »aller Dinge« auslösen. What is the relationship between the preeminent, cosmos-reconciling 'Christ' of Col 1:15–20 and the imprisoned 'Paul' of 1:24–29, who enigmatically 'completes' the former's afflictions as he declares to 'every person' the mystery, long concealed but only now revealed by Israel's God to his holy ones? After finding solid exegetical ground through an unprecedented and exhaustive study of the rare verb antanaplēroō (in 1.24), Bruce Clark tackles this most intriguing, if challenging question. He argues that Col 1, in accord with 2 Cor 5:18–6:4, presents Paul as the utterly unique diakonos ('minister') of the universal ekklēsia and, therefore, as one whose afflictions uniquely complete Christ's own, so that together, revealing the righteousness of God, they initiate the divine reconciliation of 'all things.'

    Andrew J. Kelley bietet eine interessante Untersuchung der Wundererzählungen aus dem Zeitalter des Zweiten Tempels und einen sorgfältigen Vergleich der Mittel zur Wundererwirkung von anderen Wundertätern und dem markinischen Jesus. Er zieht in dieser Arbeit Schlussfolgerungen bezüglich Markus' Sicht auf Jesus sowie der Bedeutung von Wundertaten im Allgemeinen. Andrew J. Kelley argues that Mark undergirds his high view of Jesus by characterizing him as a miracle-worker who does not defer to a deity in order to perform miracles. Survey work in the first half of this monograph shows that this is distinct from the many miracle-workers depicted in sources contemporary to the Gospel of Mark. Further emphasizing this distinction is the fact that all other miracle-workers in Mark either defer to the Jewish God or to Jesus to perform miracles. The author shows that these two characteristics of Mark's depiction of miracle working in contrast to other depictions of miracle working in the time period make it likely that Mark is using Jesus' autonomous miracle working to undergird his high, perhaps divine, view of Jesus.

    This article presents some of the results of the research on the God that Julian of Norwich makes known to us through her Christological revelations. This woman left a writing about her revelations, in which Jesus Christ is the centre of her theology. In this document, the motherhood of God is manifested as the foundation of human nature. In this research, we wanted to answer the question about what the keys to the theological reading are that we find in Julian of Norwich, which are able to contribute to rethinking current Christology. We turn to hermeneutics as the method that offers an understanding that the theological exercise of interpreting is an art, a practice and a science, a reading and a rewriting based on the existing sources. The results allow us to rethink Christology from a mystical point of view and following Jesus, with an understandable, questioning, propositional and narrative language. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: This article contributes to research regarding women and their theological production. It highlights the Christological reading that Juliana of Norwich made and that becomes a point of reference for analysing and interpreting the action of God from a vision of Verbo incarnation as our mother. The novelty that this research offers is in the identification and deepening of three important categories for theology: a Christology that re-signifies sin and suffering; a Christology of trust, supplication and petition; and a Christology of Jesus’ motherhood.

    Dass die göttliche Weisheit (ḥåḵmā/sophia) in einigen Texten des Alten Testaments und des Frühjudentums als präexistente und personifizierte, mit Gott verbundene Gestalt vorgestellt wird und somit weibliche Dimensionen in das jüdisch-christliche Gottesbild einbringt, ist bekannt. Wenig bewusst ist die starke präexistenzchristologische Rezeption von Sophia-Motiven im Neuen Testament, in der Patristik und in der liturgischen Tradition. Dieser Artikel zeichnet für Spr 8,22-31; 9,1-5; Sir 24,3-12; Bar 3,9-4,4; Weish 7-8; 9; 11,4 und äthHen 42,1-3 diese Rezeption in der ntl. Briefliteratur und den Evangelien nach (1 Kor 8,6;10,4; 2 Kor 3,18; 4,4.6; Kol 1,15-17; Hebr 1,2-3; Joh 1,1-18; Lk 7,31-35; 11,49-51; 13,34-35) und stellt auch die kirchliche Weiterführung dieser Rezeption vor. Dazu werden prominente Passagen von Augustinus (Civ. 18,20; Ep.187) und Gregor v. Nazianz (Or. 31) sowie einige alte und moderne liturgische Texte präsentiert. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden traditionskompatible Möglichkeiten zur Demaskulinisierung der trinitarischen Sprache in Theologie und Gottesdienst angedacht.

    In the last century, beauty has not often found itself enlisted in struggles for justice. As Alexander Nehemas recounts, beauty's severance from goodness and truth in the modern period renders beauty dangerous, its charm easily wielded as an instrument of oppression in the hands of the powerful. While some scholars have argued for a return to the pre-modern metaphysics that binds beauty to truth and goodness, the abuse of beauty is not simply a modern phenomenon, and its resistance requires more than a pre-modern solution. Beauty is eschatological; thus its abuse points to a failure to order it properly to its eschatological end. This article will argue that the abuse of beauty can be resisted not by spiritualising beauty, but by ordering physical beauty to its eschatological end. This end is most clearly seen in the ascended Christ, with his beautiful body that is human, wounded and hidden.

    At first glance, the apostles and the other messengers of the Gospel appear to be the protagonists in the plot of Acts. However, seen within the context of Greco-Roman modes of characterisation, their roles prove to be a subtle reference to the divine guidance. An analysis of how Peter, Paul and the other witnesses enter and leave the narrative stage, how they interact and how their appearance is depicted leads to the insight that their roles are meant to be relative, functional and transparent. They thus refer to the Risen Lord as the real protagonist of Acts. Auf den ersten Blick erscheinen die Apostel und die anderen Boten des Evangeliums als Protagonisten der Apostelgeschichte. Im Kontext griechisch-römischer Figurencharakterisierung erweist sich ihre Rolle jedoch als subtiler Verweis auf die göttliche Führung. Eine Analyse, wie Petrus, Paulus und die übrigen Zeugen die Erzählbühne betreten und verlassen, wie sie interagieren und charakterisiert werden, zeigt die deutliche Relativierung, Funktionalität und Transparenz ihrer Rolle. Sie verweisen damit auf den erhöhten Herrn als eigentliche Hauptfigur der Apostelgeschichte.

    Die Präexistenz Jesu ist unzweifelhaft einer der markantesten Aspekte im Johannesevangelium. Dennoch fehlt erstaunlicherweise bislang eine eingehende exegetische Untersuchung des Themas. Ungeklärt sind entsprechend Umfang, sprachliche Gestalt und inhaltliche Füllung der johanneischen Präexistenzchristologie.Die Studie basiert auf einer innovativen Definition von Präexistenz, die anhand sprachlicher Merkmale genau sieben Präexistenzstellen identifiziert (1,1f; 1,15.30; 6,62; 8,58; 17,5.24). Diese werden konsequent und umfassend von ihrer erzählerischen Einbettung und Funktion her interpretiert. So wird sichtbar, dass die Präexistenz Jesu ein planvoll integriertes Motiv ist, das auf faszinierende Weise mit der erzählten Zeit interagiert und eine gegenläufige Zeitlinie bildet. Aufgespannt zwischen Prolog und Abschiedsgebet, durchschreitet sie die Zeit zwischen Johannes der Täufer und der Weltschöpfung. Letztere verbindet sich mit dem Kulminationspunkt des Johannesevangeliums, nämlich der "Stunde" Jesu. Diese Stunde, Tod und Auferstehung, steht im Licht der vorweltlichen Liebe Gottes zu Jesus. Damit erweist sich die Präexistenz Jesu als ein Schlüsselmotiv für die johanneische Interpretation des Heilsgeschehens

    Die Arbeit analysiert die vielfältige Darstellung medialer Prozesse in zwei spätmittelalterlichen ,Liebes- und Abenteuerromanen': Reinfried von Braunschweig und Apollonius von Tyrland. Mit dem Interesse an Medialität schließt sie an einen aktuellen Forschungsschwerpunkt der germanistischen Mediävistik an, durch die Auseinandersetzung mit erzählten medialen Vorgängen setzt sie einen originellen Fokus im Forschungsfeld. Medientheoretisch fundiert und historisch sensibel widmet die Untersuchung sich in close-readings den medialen Formen, die auf der Textebene in Erscheinung treten und mithilfe derer die Figuren Raum-, Zeit-, und Sphärengrenzen kommunikativ überwinden. Beide Texte heben die durch mediale Vorgänge eröffneten Handlungsmöglichkeiten sowie die Relevanz von Medienkompetenz hervor und profilieren literarische Texte selbst als mediale Formen mit besonderen Vermittlungspotentialen.     Two gädls, briefly examined in this study, portray Iyasu I as a Ṣägga Lǝǧ partisan. Ṣägga Lǝǧ is one of two views dismissed as heresy at the 1878 Boru Meda synod. This synod settled the Christological controversy that beset the Ethiopian Church for two and a half centuries, by declaring Karra, the polemical name for Täwaḥǝdo, as official orthodoxy. What is strange about the accounts of the two gädls is that they seem to contradict oneof the doxas of Ethiopian historiography, which is that Iyasu I was a diehard Täwaḥǝdo. This study resolves this enigma by showing that during the Gondärine period the Täwaḥǝdo teaching, which enjoyed the recognition of the royal centre as orthodoxy, was Ṣägga Lǝǧ. Such revision of the historiography of the doctrinal controversy in turn paves the way for a better understanding of the rebellion of Lasta and southern Tǝgray, against the monarchial centre of Gondärine Ethiopia. So far, the history of this rebellionis poorly understood due to the wrong assumption that the Karra teaching championed by the Lasta–Tǝgray group at the time was the same Täwaḥǝdo of the monarchial centre. No historian could thus entertain the possibility of a long lasting rebellion in the name of Karra. This study shows that throughout much of the Gondarine period, Karra was rather the doctrine of a third party that defied the centre using Lasta and southernTǝgray as safe-heavens.
