    "Is the Bible the unembellished Word of God or the product of human agency? There are different answers to that question. And they lie at the heart of this book's powerful exploration of the fraught ways in which money, race and power shape the story of Christianity in American public life. The authors' subject is the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC: arguably the latest example of a long line of white evangelical institutions aiming to amplify and promote a religious, political, and moral agenda of their own. In their careful and compelling investigation, Jill Hicks-Keeton and Cavan Concannon disclose the ways in which the Museum's exhibits reinforce a particularized and partial interpretation of the Bible's meaning. Bringing to light the Museum's implicit messaging about scriptural provenance and audience, the authors reveal how the MOTB produces a version of the Bible that in essence authorizes a certain sort of white evangelical privilege; promotes a view of history aligned with that same evangelical aspiration; and above all protects a cohort of white evangelicals from critique. They show too how the Museum collapses vital conceptual distinctions between its own conservative vision of the Bible and 'The Bible' as a cultural icon. This revelatory volume above all confirms that scripture - for all the claims made for it that it speaks only divine truth - can in the end never be separated from human politics"--

    Previous studies of Christianity and hip-hop have mainly focused on the US and African American cultural context, and on evangelical minorities in different anglophone contexts. The current study offers a novel perspective on the study of Christianity and hip-hop by presenting an audiovisual close reading of two rap music videos – Kaunis Jeesus and Hoosianna – that were commissioned by a Nordic mainline church institution, the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church. The paper identifies two articulations of hip-hop esthetics in these audiovisual productions. The first articulation follows the common evangelical approach to popular music and is marked by the absence of many of the esthetic traits of secular hip-hop culture while the second articulation embraces the stylistic practices of hip-hop in order to communicate that the church is a culturally inclusive institution and to counter the exclusivist ideologies of the nationalist-populist political movements.

The North East Indian tribals resist oppressive forces but are receptive to uplifting initiatives. The tribal belief system became distinct with the populace embracing Christianity en masse. The Bible and its message gained importance and relevance; so too tribal myths and oral tradition. Though initially looked at as superstitious and diabolic, the depth of tribal cultural ethos germinated in social transformation and theological consciousness. Hermeneutics initiated the process of dialogue and liberation, mutual and holistic transformation, breeding versatility in biblical and tribal cultures.

    Echoing the writings of their American counterparts, Filipino evangelicals have published bestselling books on love and sex. These books appeal because of their practical tips, often narrated in conversational Tagalog and English. We turn to some of the most influential books in this article. These works exhort their readers to embrace sexual purity in preparation for the one God intends for them—"God's best." Although decidedly evangelical, these writings are packaged within the language of a secular genre—love and relationships—known for espousing more liberal views on romance and sexuality. Two rhetorical techniques matter: (1) the simultaneous promotion and disavowal of courtship; and (2) the use of religious testimony. The article ends with critical reflections on evangelicalism as a countercultural movement in Philippine society.

L. de Wette, der bis heute als einer der wichtigsten theologischen Bildungs- und Lehrromane seiner Zeit gilt. Anlässlich der Jubiläums-Neuedition eröffnen die Beiträge des wissenschaftlichen Begleitbandes theologische, philosophische und literaturwissenschaftliche Zugänge zu den Hintergründen seiner Epoche und Wirkungsgeschichte.     In den Auseinandersetzungen des 16. Jahrhunderts um Kirche und zentrale Glaubensfragen ist der Diskurs der reformatorischen Bewegungen von einem Bedeutungszuwachs apokalyptischer Deutungsschemata geprägt. Die Kritik an Kirche und kirchlichen Institutionen, aber auch die eigene Position wurden entlang endzeitlicher Deutungen exegetisch legitimiert: Identifikationen von gegenwärtigen und historischen Ereignissen, Personen und Personengruppen anhand apokalyptischer Bilder wurden aus der für die eigene Bewegung beanspruchten Perspektive der Rechtgläubigkeit argumentiert. Die dadurch entstandene apokalyptische Gegenwartsdeutung speiste sich vorrangig aus der Bibel, allerdings wurden auch andere Quellen wie astrologische und visionäre Weissagungen verwendet. Insbesondere die darin manifestierten unterschiedlichen Auffassungen von Exegese, Offenbarung und Prophetie trugen zu einem endzeitlichen Diskurs bei, der zwischen der diskursmächtigen lutherischen Bewegung und marginalisierten reformatorischen Richtungen geführt wurde und Gegenstand dieser diskursanalytischen und kulturwissenschaftlichen Untersuchung ist

    Die Forschung zur katholischen Predigtkultur zwischen Westfälischem Frieden und Aufklärungsepoche kennzeichnet eine große Leerstelle. Die vorliegende Studie erhellt anhand des geschlossenen Quellenbestandes der Bayerischen Kapuzinerprovinz, was und wie im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert gepredigt wurde. Das Buch begreift Predigten dabei als pastorale Strategien, die sich an eine implizite Hörer- und Leserschaft wenden. Denn auf ihre imaginierten Adressaten hin ist diese genuin mündliche Textsorte konzipiert. Predigten sind somit Praxeologien religiösen Wissens, die zu einem bestimmten Handeln in einer konkreten, zumeist ländlichen Lebenswelt anleiten möchten. Aufgrund der eher unscharfen kirchlichen Vorgaben nach dem Konzil von Trient, wie eine erfolgreiche Kanzelrede auszusehen hat, kreuzen sich dabei verschiedene Frömmigkeitsformen. Wie z.B. Jesus Christus verehrt oder liturgische Feste begangen werden sollen, was den idealen Ehepartner oder einen 'guten' Tod ausmacht oder wie die Gemeinde mit Armen umzugehen hat, beantworteten die Predigtautoren zwischen 1670 und 1800 recht unterschiedlich. Dieser differenzierte Quellenbefund liegt nahe, nicht von einem allzu starken Bruch zwischen den Epochen der Konfessionalisierung und dem aufgeklärten Zeitalter auszugehen. Vielmehr plädiert die Studie für eine schrittweise Transformation von Frömmigkeitsensemblen im Übergang zur Moderne

    Is the Bible the unembellished Word of God or the product of human agency? There are different answers to that question. And they lie at the heart of this book's powerful exploration of the fraught ways in which money, race and power shape the story of Christianity in American public life. The authors' subject is the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC: arguably the latest example of a long line of white evangelical institutions aiming to amplify and promote a religious, political, and moral agenda of their own. In their careful and compelling investigation, Jill Hicks-Keeton and Cavan Concannon disclose the ways in which the Museum's exhibits reinforce a particularized and partial interpretation of the Bible's meaning. Bringing to light the Museum's implicit messaging about scriptural provenance and audience, the authors reveal how the MOTB produces a version of the Bible that in essence authorizes a certain sort of white evangelical privilege; promotes a view of history aligned with that same evangelical aspiration; and above all protects a cohort of white evangelicals from critique.     Increasingly articulate contemporary art practices are engaging with biblical representation, revealing new relationships with religion through the availability of the word in image. Taking as exemplary the photographic publication of Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin's Holy Bible (2013), this essay considers the evidence for their hermeneutics between image and word that is characterized by open awareness of and expansive participation in the (rereading of the) Bible. Discussing this engagement, I explore imagistic readings of the Bible through the artists' strategies of interpolation and repetition, as well as examining their chosen theme—catastrophe—for its revelatory power. Through the artists' self-reflexive hermeneutics of indeterminacy, I argue that the discussion of the return of religion in art needs attuning to this kind of specific practitioner experience: a hermeneutical circle of imaginative, dialogical, and dynamic interpretative positions in which the notion of indeterminacy is persuasive for interpretative grist, historical accountability, and theological horizon.

    Ancient myths are not dead. Based on this premise, founded on the research of scholars such as Warburg, Jean Seznec, Erwin Panofsky and Fritz Saxl, the intent of this paper is to delineate the historical paths which legitimized the survival of the myth of the Sibyls in the Christian world in its close association with astrology. Paganism was not reborn after the Middle Ages. It has always been an intrinsic element of Christianity, not only symbolically, but also as a direct impact on people and their lives. Some particular moments in history are in this sense noteworthy, from the apologist priests of primitive Christianity to the birth of modern science. The sibyls and astrology, as "outside" witnesses, are a constant presence in Christian theology, literature and music, as well as in artistic representations of the Christian world, which is the focus of this paper. The survival or afterlife (Naschleben) of the sibyls throughout history is further affirmed by the writings of the patristic and scholastic theologians, and also evidenced in the work of Albumasar, the Muslim theologian born in the 8th century, who associates sibyls, astrology and the Virgin Mary. How can we justify the presence of the sibyls on the ceilings of Catholic churches? This is the question that this paper largely intends to address.

    In this paper, the authors aim at examining how pilgrimage might positively change the personal life of the participating individual, and the life of the releasing community. In the authors' perception, where the individual is a member of a local religious community, after returning home he or she reports about his or her experiences to other members of the community; thus one member is positively influencing the community as a whole. This research study is focusing on Christian pilgrimage, however, due to the common nature of pilgrimage in different kind of religions the authors believe that the results of this study could lead to valid conclusions of a more general nature. The paper is structured as follows: first, the concept of pilgrimage is depicted, and how this concept evolved especially in Christian theology; then, following the literature review, the methods of examining pilgrimage is described. The authors employ a detailed questionnaire as an asset to interview devoted members of a local religious community who have experienced pilgrimage. The results partly summarise the effects of how pilgrimage has changed the values and faiths of the members' lives within the community.

The book first outlines postcolonial criticism and discusses the challenges it poses for biblical scholarship, then scrutinizes the complex ways with which nineteenth-century commentaries on Mark's Gospel interplayed with the formation of European colonial identities. It examines the stance of Mark's Gospel vis-à-vis the Roman Empire and analyzes the manner in which the fibers of empire within Mark are interwoven, reproduced, negotiated, modified and subverted. Finally, it offers synthesizing suggestions for bringing Mark beyond a colonial heritage.     Most human action has a technical dimension. This book examines four components of this technical dimension. First, in all actions, various individual, organizational or institutional agents combine actional capabilities with tools, institutions, infrastructure and other elements by means of which they act. Second, the deployment of capabilities and means is permeated by ethical aspirations and hesitancies. Third, all domains of action are affected by these ethical dilemmas. Fourth, the dimensions of the technicity of action are typical of human life in general, and not just a regional or culturally specific phenomenon. In this study, an interdisciplinary approach is adopted to encompass the broad anthropological scope of this study and combine this bigger picture with detailed attention to the socio-historical particularities of action as it plays out in different contexts. Hermeneutics (the philosophical inquiry into the human phenomena of meaning, understanding and interpretation) and social science (as the study of all human affairs) are the two main disciplinary orientations of this book.     In his carmina, Venantius Fortunatus (sixth century) has left us three figurate poems that depict the cross as an image, while its verses describe the cross textually. He is thus an author who completely detaches figurate poems from the pagan tradition and inscribes them in the Christian one. The aim of this essay is to examine these poems from a pictorialist perspective. To this end, after a brief presentation of all three poems, they are considered, firstly, as ekphraseis that draw on a three-step representation: The figure depicts a cross that points to transcendence, the verses describe it, and they have the potential to evoke an additional mental image in the reader. Secondly, I examine what image and text, and thus the figurate poems as intermedial products, gain through the respective other medium. This results, thirdly, in an analysis of the figurate poems within the categories of iconism, aniconism, and anti-iconism.

    This article analyzes the use and meaning of central Greek terms related to images in ancient Greek texts collected in the Diorisis Ancient Greek Corpus (Alessandro Vatri and McGillivray 2018). In contrast to the existing literature on the (religious) status of images in Greco-Roman Antiquity, Judaism, and Christianity, this article applies a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and computer-driven examinations with a qualitative analysis of selected sentences. The examination of the use and meaning of agalma, eidôlon, and eikôn considers various religious contexts (Jewish and Christian as well as Greco-Roman polytheistic), thereby embedding this article in the larger framework of comparative religious research on synchronic inter-religious contact.
