    Garrett Stewart begins The Deed of Reading with a memory of his first hesitant confrontation, as a teenager, with poetic density. In that early verbal challenge he finds one driving force of literature: to make language young again in its surprise, coming alive in each new event of reading. But what exactly happens in the textual encounter to make literary phrasing resonate so deeply with readers?To take the measure of literary writing, The Deed of Reading convenes diverse philosophic commentary on the linguistics of literature, with stress on the complementary work of Stanley Cavell and Giorgio Agamben. Sympathetic to recent ventures in form-attentive analysis but resisting an emphasis on so-called surface reading, Stewart explores not some new formalism but the internal pressures of language in formation, registering the verbal infrastructure of literary prose as well as verse. In this mode of "contextual" reading, the context is language itself. Literary phrasing, tapping the speech act's own generative pulse, emerges as a latent philosophy of language in its own right, whereby human subjects, finding no secure place to situate themselves within language, settle for its taking place in, through, and between them.Stewart watches and hears this dynamics of wording played out in dozens of poems and novels over two centuries of English literary production—from Wordsworth and Shelley to Browning and Hopkins, from Poe and Dickens through George Eliot, Conrad, James, and on to Toni Morrison. The Deed of Reading offers a revisionary contribution to the ethic of verbal attention in the grip of "deep reading.

    Building a National Literature boldly takes issue with traditional literary criticism for its failure to explain how literature as a body is created and shaped by institutional forces. Peter Uwe Hohendahl approaches literary history by focusing on the material and ideological structures that determine the canonical status of writers and works. He examines important elements in the making of a national literature, including the political and literary public sphere, the theory and practice of literary criticism, and the emergence of academic criticism as literary history. Hohendahl considers such key aspects of the process in Germany as the rise of liberalism and nationalism, the delineation of the borders of German literature, the idea of its history, the understanding of its cultural function, and the notion of a canon of major and minor authors.

    Main description: This volume provides a novel approach to the history of literature in Germany. In the sense of a history of literature as a whole, Jost Schneider describes the changing reading habits of the different strata within the German society. Biographical note: Jost Schneider ist Professor am Germanistischen Institut der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Main description: Das Buch liefert eine neuartige Geschichte der deutschen Literatur von den Anfängen bis zur Gegenwart. Im Sinne einer Gesamtgeschichte der gelesenen Literatur beschreibt es nicht nur die Höhenkammliteratur der Bildungseliten, sondern auch die Repräsentationsliteratur der Führungsschichten, die Unterhaltungsliteratur der Mittelschichten sowie die Kompensationsliteratur der Deklassierten. Jede dieser vier Literaturen hat ihre eigenen Funktionen und ihre eigene Entwicklungsdynamik. Das Buch zeigt, daß die Landkarte der deutschen Literatur noch zahlreiche weiße Flecken aufweist, ohne deren Beseitigung auch eine Positionsbestimmung der bereits genauer erforschten Zonen nicht möglich ist. Von den herkömmlichen Formen der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung unterscheidet sich diese Literaturgeschichte durch die konsequente Berücksichtigung des aktuellen Forschungsstandes der Kultursoziologie, der Leserforschung und der Medienwirkungsanalyse.     Der Essay des Kulturwissenschaftlers und Belletristik-Autors Gernot Wolfram (zuletzt "Das Wüstenhaus", ID-A 14/11) besteht, genau besehen, aus 2 Teilen: Aus 3 im engeren Sinne kulturwissenschaftlichen Beiträgen (über Aby Warburg, Walter Benjamin und Paul Celan) und aus einer Reihe von Streifzügen durch "Orte des Lesens" wie das Café, das Krankenbett oder die Schützengräben des 1. Weltkrieges, ergänzt um Aspekte des Lese-Erlebnisses und Ausblicke auf die Geschichte der Weltliteratur. Wie es der Gattung des Essays entspricht, folgt der Autor im 2. Teil des Bändchens seinen Einfällen und Assoziationen, so dass der Leser eine Fülle interessanter, aber auch höchst verschiedenartiger Facetten der Lesekultur in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart erfährt. Zu einer "Kulturgeschichte des Lesens" (wie vom Autor beabsichtigt) runden sich diese Beobachtungen allerdings nicht. - Als Ergänzung zu Alberto Manguel: "Geschichte des Lesens" (zuletzt BA 2/09) in gröe︢ren Bibliotheken möglich.     Main description: Nearly all of us have studied poetry and been taught to look for the symbolic as well as literal meaning of the text. Is this the way the ancients saw poetry? In Birth of the Symbol, Peter Struck explores the ancient Greek literary critics and theorists who invented the idea of the poetic "symbol." The book notes that Aristotle and his followers did not discuss the use of poetic symbolism. Rather, a different group of Greek thinkers--the allegorists--were the first to develop the notion. Struck extensively revisits the work of the great allegorists, which has been underappreciated. He links their interest in symbolism to the importance of divination and magic in ancient times, and he demonstrates how important symbolism became when they thought about religion and philosophy. "They see the whole of great poetic language as deeply figurative," he writes, "with the potential always, even in the most mundane details, to be freighted with hidden messages." Birth of the Symbol offers a new understanding of the role of poetry in the life of ideas in ancient Greece. Moreover, it demonstrates a connection between the way we understand poetry and the way it was understood by important thinkers in ancient times.

    Epigrams, the briefest of Greek poetic forms, had a strong appeal for readers of the Hellenistic period (323-31 B.C.). One of the most characteristic literary forms of the era, the epigram, unlike any other ancient or classical form of poetry, was not only composed for public recitation but was also collected in books intended for private reading. Brief and concise, concerned with the personal and the particular, the epigram emerged in the Hellenistic period as a sophisticated literary form that evinces the period's aesthetic preference for the miniature, the intricate, and the fragmented. Kathryn Gutzwiller offers the first full-length literary study of these important poems by studying the epigrams within the context of the poetry books in which they were originally collected. Drawing upon ancient sources as well as recent papyrological discoveries, Gutzwiller reconstructs the nature of Hellenistic epigram books and interprets individual poems as if they remained part of their original collections. This approach results in illuminating and original readings of many major poets, and demonstrates that individual epigrammatists were differentiated by gender, ethnicity, class status, and philosophical views. In an important final chapter, Gutzwiller reconstructs much of the poetic structure of Meleager's Garland, an ancient anthology of Hellenistic epigrams

    This study transforms our understanding of Roman love elegy, an important and complex corpus of poetry that flourished in the late first century b.c.e. Sharon L. James reads key poems by Propertius, Tibullus, and Ovid for the first time from the perspective of the woman to whom they are addressed—the docta puella, or learned girl, the poet's beloved. By interpreting the poetry not, as has always been done, from the stance of the elite male writers—as plaint and confession—but rather from the viewpoint of the women—thus as persuasion and attempted manipulation—James reveals strategies and substance that no one has listened for before

    John Ruskin’s Sesame and Lilies, first published in 1865, stands as a classic nineteenth-century statement on the natures and duties of men and women. Although widely popular in its time, the work in its entirety has been out of print since the early twentieth century. This volume returns Sesame and Lilies to easy availability and reunites the two halves of the work: Of Kings’ Treasuries, in which Ruskin critiques Victorian manhood, and Of Queens’ Gardens, in which he counsels women to take their places as the moral guides of men and urges the parents of girls to educate them to this end.Feminist critics of the 1960s and 1970s regarded Of Queens’ Gardens as an exemplary expression of repressive Victorian ideas about femininity, and they paired it with John Stuart Mill’s more progressive Subjection of Women. This volume, by including the often ignored Of Kings’ Treasuries, offers readers full access to Ruskin’s complex and sometimes contradictory views on men and women. The accompanying essays place Sesame and Lilies within historical debates on men, women, culture, and the family. Elizabeth Helsinger examines the text as a meditation on the pleasures of reading, Seth Koven gives a wide-ranging account of how Victorians read Sesame and Lilies, and Jan Marsh situates the work within controversies over educational reform
