    The concept of "postmigration" has recently gained importance in the context of European societies' obsession with migration and integration along with emerging new forms of exclusion and nationalisms. This book introduces ongoing debates on the developing concept of "postmigration" and how it can be applied to arts and culture. While the concept has mainly gained traction in the cultural scene in Berlin, Germany, the contributions expand the field of study by attending to cultural expressions in literature, theatre, film, and art across various European societies, such as the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Denmark, and Germany. By doing so, the contributions highlight this concept's potential and show how it can offer new perspectives on transformations caused by migration.

    Angst, Sorge, Empörung, Hass, Verachtung, aber auch Vertrauen, Hoffnung, Mitleid, Empathie oder Sympathie gelten als Movens sowohl von Protestbewegungen als auch als Faktor in Meinungsbildungsprozessen, sie scheinen den Zusammenhalt politischer Gebilde zu garantieren, sie sind verantwortlich für massenpsychologische Phänomene wie Umsturz und Revolution oder für das Kippen dieser Bewegungen in Terror und Schrecken. Zu aktuellen Debatten um die Legitimität politischer Emotionen trägt der vorliegende Band durch den Blick in die Kunst- und Literaturgeschichte bei: Von welchen Ikonographien zehren aktuelle Emotionspolitiken, welchen längst kodierten Dramaturgien folgen soziale Bewegungen, welche bekannten Narrative der Mobilisierung oder Eindämmung politischer Emotionen werden aufgegriffen? Fear, worry, indignation, hate, contempt as well as trust, hope, compassion, empathy, or sympathy are regarded as both drivers of protest movements and a factor in processes of opinion formation, seem to guarantee the solidarity of political entities, and are responsible for crowd psychology phenomena like coups and revolutions or for the collapse of such movements into terror and horror. This book contributes to current debates surrounding the legitimacy of political emotions by taking a look at the history of art and literature: What iconographies do current politics of emotion draw on, to which long-since coded dramaturgies do social movements adhere, and what familiar narratives of mobilizing or containing political emotions are taken up?

    "This edited collection of essays focuses on the topic of protest during the Enlightenment of the long eighteenth century (roughly 1670-1833). Resistance in the eighteenth century was extensive, and the act of protest to foment meaningful societal change took on many forms from the circulation of ballads, swearing of oaths, to riots and work stoppages, or the composition of essays, novels, posters, caricatures, political cartoons as well as theater and opera. The contributors to this volume examine the causes of protest as well as the broad ways in which common artifacts such as poles, trees, drums, conchs, and songs acted as flashpoints for conflict and vehicles of protest. Rather than approaching the topic with strict geographical, temporal and structural limitations, this book focuses on the time period from an international perspective and an interdisciplinary scope. Because of its wide scope, this book is an important contribution to the subject that will be of interest to both faculty and students of the history of protest, resistance and the changes that these forces bring as it also reminds us that the protests of today are rooted in historical resistances of the past"--

In so doing, it illustrates how creative endeavours in different artforms converged in support of women's suffrage. Topics encompassed range from the artistic output of such household names as Sylvia Pankhurst and Ethel Smyth, to the recent feature film Suffragette. It also brings to light under-represented figures and neglected works related to the suffrage movement. A wide variety of material is explored, from poems, diaries and newspapers to posters, dress and artefacts to songs, opera, plays and film. Picturing Death: 1200-1600 explores the visual culture of mortality over the course of four centuries that witnessed a remarkable flourishing of imagery focused on the themes of death, dying, and the afterlife. In doing so, this volume sheds light on issues that unite two periods-the Middle Ages and the Renaissance-that are often understood as diametrically opposed. The studies collected here cover a broad visual terrain, from tomb sculpture to painted altarpieces, from manuscripts to printed books, and from minute carved objects to large-scale architecture.     Cordial Cold War examines cultural entanglements, in various forms, between two distant yet interconnected sites of the Cold War – India and the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Focusing on theatre performances, film festivals, newsreels, travel literature, radio broadcasting, cartography and art as sites of engagement, the chapters spotlight spaces of interaction that emerged in spite of, and within, the ambits of Cold War constraints. The inter-disciplinary collection sheds light on the variegated nature of translocal cultural entanglements, at work even before the GDR was officially recognized as a sovereign state by India in 1972. By foregrounding the role of actors, their practices and the sites of their entanglement, the contributions show how creative energies were mobilized to forge zones of friendship, mutual interest and envisioned solidarities. This volume situates actors from the Global South as mutual co-shapers of the cultural Cold War, therein shifting its Euro-American and Soviet epicenters to Non-Aligned India. Going beyond official state channels of international political dialogue, it locates cordiality in the micro-histories and everyday experiences of interpersonal engagements, bringing to focus a hitherto underexplored chapter of India–Germany entanglements.

They took their shared dream of being writers from Perth to London and launched themselves in Fleet Street, interviewing some of the century's literary greats, including James Joyce, AA Milne, and George Bernard Shaw. After settling in Sydney in the 1930s, they embraced the city's vibrant arts scene and established prolific careers. Leslie became an award-winning children's book author and the ABC's national drama editor, while Coralie was one of the country's first female broadcasters. Vancouver poets and artists began thinking about their creative works with new clarity and set about testing and redefining the boundaries of literature. As new gardes in Vancouver explored the limits of text and language, some writers began incorporating collage and concrete poetics into their work while others delved deeper into unsettling, revolutionary, and Surrealistic imagery. This paradox has shaped discussions on authorship since at least the 1960s, when the dominant notion of the individual author-genius was first critically questioned. The ongoing discussion has mainly focused on literature and the arts, but has ignored nearly any artistic practice beyond these two fields. “Constructions of Media Authorship” aims to fill this gap: the volume’s interdisciplinary contributions reflect historical and current artistic practices within various media and attempt to grasp them from different perspectives.The first part sheds a new light on different artistic and design practices and questions the still dominant view on the individual identifiable author. The second part discusses creative practices in literature, emphasizing the interrelation of aesthetic discourses and media practices. The third part investigates authoring in audiovisual media, especially film and TV, while the final part turns to electronic and digital media and their collective creativity and hybrid mediality. The volume is also an attempt to develop new methodological approaches, focusing on the interplay between various human and non-human actors in different media constellations

    The concept of "postmigration" has recently gained importance in the context of European societies' obsession with migration and integration along with emerging new forms of exclusion and nationalisms. This book introduces ongoing debates on the developing concept of "postmigration" and how it can be applied to arts and culture. While the concept has mainly gained traction in the cultural scene in Berlin, Germany, the contributions expand the field of study by attending to cultural expressions in literature, theatre, film, and art across various European societies, such as the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Denmark, and Germany. By doing so, the contributions highlight this concept's potential and show how it can offer new perspectives on transformations caused by migration.

    Ästhetische Bildung wird im 20. Jahrhundert zu einer zentralen Dimension des modernen Alltags. Die ästhetische Erfahrung, die Gestaltung eines schönen Alltags und die imaginäre Aufladung des Lebens durch unterschiedliche künstlerische Medien als auch Design zielen in der ersten Hälfte des Jahrhunderts häufig auf eine soziale, politische oder nationale Veränderung. In der zweiten Hälfte dienen sie stärker einer kritischen Perspektive auf die Gesellschaft sowie einer experimentellen Praxis eigener Lebensentwürfe. Die Autor:innen zeichnen anhand von ästhetischen Konzeptionen (u.a. von Alfred Lichtwark, Sigmund Freud, Walter Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer, Theodor W. Adorno, Andy Warhol und Diedrich Diedrichsen), aber auch von Konzeptionen des Bauhauses, der NS-Zeit und der Musischen Bildung, den Diskurs über die Frage nach den (Un)Möglichkeiten einer pädagogischen Rahmung des Ästhetischen nach.

    "In Black Paper, Teju Cole meditates on what it means to keep our humanity--and witness the humanity of others--in a time of darkness. "Darkness," Cole writes, "is not empty." Through art, politics, travel, and memoir, he returns us to the wisdom latent in shadows, and sets the darkness echoing. The opening essay sets the mood for the book, as Cole travels to southern Italy and Sicily to view a series of Caravaggio paintings. He ponders the suffering that Caravaggio ("a murderer, a slaveholder, a terror, and a pest") both dealt out and experienced, and the disquieting echoes of that suffering in the abandoned boats of migrants arriving on nearby shores. This collection also gathers several of Cole's recent columns on photography for the New York Times Magazine and offers a suite of elegies to lost friends who show him--and us--ways of mourning in times of death"--

    Die Kulturgeschichte der gescheiterten Kunstwerke in einer prachtvoll gestalteten Ausgabe. Weshalb gibt es von Stanley Kubricks monumentalem Filmvorhaben zu Napoleon nur ein Drehbuch? Warum hört Stockhausens Werkzyklus mit dem seltsamen Titel KLANG bei der 21. Stunde auf? Und wieso schaffte es David Foster Wallace nicht, seinen Roman "Der bleiche König" zu vollenden? Die Liste der gescheiterten Kunstwerke der Kulturgeschichte ist lang und spektakulär. Und die Gründe für das Scheitern sind so unterschiedlich wie die einzelnen Projekte: Mal war es der Größenwahn des Künstlers, ein anderes Mal fehlte plötzlich das Geld, nicht selten kam ein früher Tod dazwischen. Der Schriftsteller Thomas von Steinaecker erzählt in seinem Buch die außergewöhnlichsten Geschichten hinter dem Scheitern und zeigt, wie einflussreich Ideen sein können, die nur in unserer Fantasie existieren. „Eine recht beliebige Auswahl, natürlich. So wie auch die vom Autor getroffene von Vorlieben abhängt. Aber doch durchaus nicht nur, denn sie hat durchaus Kanonisches im Blick und ist reich genug, dass die Variationsbreite ganz verschiedener offener Enden zur Darstellung kommt, einschließlich der an den Rändern auftauchenden Frage, was es überhaupt mit der definitiven, endgültigen Fassung auf sich hat, die alle Gefahren oder auch Lockungen des offenen Endes bannt. Eine Frage, die manchmal banal ist, aber auch – von Steinaecker zeigt es etwa an der (fast) endlosen postumen Nachgeschichte berühmter Songs und Alben auf dem Feld des Pop – Überraschungen bereithält. Auf jeden Fall aber gilt: Das wirklich unüberbietbare Werk ist das nicht zustande gekommene“ (FAZ). „Ob Michelangelo, Schubert, Stanley Kubrick, die Beach Boys oder Ludwig II.: Selbst die Allergrößten sind irgendwann einmal gescheitert. Der Schriftsteller Thomas von Steinaecker hat die Geschichten jener Werke gesammelt, die nie fertiggestellt wurden.
