    What’s new about the apocalypse? Revelation does not allow us to look back after the end and enumerate pivotal turning points. It happens in an immediate encounter with the transformatively new.John Milton’s and Andrew Marvell’s lyrics attempt to render the experience of such an apocalyptic change in the present. In this respect they take seriously the Reformation’s insistence that eschatology is a historical phenomenon. Yet these poets are also reacting to the Regicide, and, as a result, their works explore very modern questions about the nature of events, what it means for a significant historical occasion to happen.Lyric Apocalypse argues that Milton’s and Marvell’s lyrics challenge any retrospective understanding of events, including one built on a theory of revolution. Instead, these poems show that there is no "after" to the apocalypse, that if we are going to talk about change, we should do so in the present, when there is still time to do something about it. For both of these poets, lyric becomes a way to imagine an apocalyptic event that would be both hopeful and new

    Dieser Band mit Aufsätzen von Christopher Rowland behandelt das Wesen der Apokalyptik und ihrer Wirkungsgeschichte. Während in der modernen Bibelwissenschaft der eschatologische Charakter in den Vordergrund gestellt wird, richtet der Autor den Fokus auf die Offenbarungsgestalt apokalyptischer Texte. Das Thema, dem der Band folgt, ist die allgegenwärtige Rolle apokalyptischer und mystischer Elemente im Neuen Testament, und die Wirkung dieses Denkens bis zu den apokalyptischen Texten und Bildern William Blakes. This volume of essays by Christopher Rowland, written during the last forty years, concerns the nature of apocalypticism and its reception history. His reading of apocalyptic texts is thereby colored not by immersion into the study of »apocalyptic« in biblical scholarship, but by acquaintance with early Jewish mysticism. One of the Oxford English Dictionary's definitions of »mystic« is one which helps to understand not only the mystical but also apocalyptic: a mystic is »one who believes in the possibility of the spiritual apprehension of truths that are inaccessible to the understanding.« This definition and the importance of the opening word of Revelation as an apocalypse – in other words, a writing whose form is revelatory -, are explored in these essays. As this understanding of apocalypticism contrasts with the eschatological character predominant in modern biblical scholarship, a theme of this collection therefore is that the eschatological elements in apocalyptic texts are not the determining feature of what constitutes »apocalyptic,« which must especially attend to the revelatory form of apocalyptic texts such as Revelation. The pervasiveness of apocalyptic and mystical elements in the New Testament is a consistent thread throughout the volume, which also includes consideration of the apocalyptic and eschatological thought of Joachim of Fiore and his disciples, the early modern appeal to visions and revelation, and culminates in the texts and images of William Blake (1757–1827). The collection's concern with the history of the reception of such ideas contributes to the vindication of Ernst Käsemann's view of apocalyptic being the »mother of Christian theology.

    The First World War spurred interest among the British people in the eschatological and apocalyptic portions of the Bible. The general scope of the war, as well as its particular course, provided much material to those who interpreted war-time events as heralds of the coming end of the age. Of particular interest was the subject of the British Empire’s place in the unfolding upheaval. The belief in Britain’s identity as God’s instrument of righteousness, whether as the King of the North, the Tarshish power, or the Israel of prophecy, assured many in Britain that their nation would play a paramount role in winning the war and establishing God’s rule on Earth.

    Scholars have proposed as many as 232 solecisms (morpho-syntactical errors) within the Greek of the Apocalypse. One of the great paradoxes of the book is its astonishing complexity expressed in such irregular Greek. While numerous scholars have sought to account for and explain the solecisms in Revelation, few have explored the aural dimension. Since the book was designed to be read aloud to early churches in Asia, it is important to investigate how irregular grammar would have affected the first hearers. This paper attempts to fill this lacuna by examining how solecisms were viewed in the ancient world and how ancients responded when lectors made mistakes in reading. This paper will then draw on the insights of ancient rhetorical handbooks to provide new insight into the irregular grammar of Revelation.

    Unter Berücksichtigung neuerer historiographischer Konzepte, in denen europäische Vorstellungen von »Geschichte« und »Zeit« aus dem 19. Jahrhundert relativiert werden, votiert der vorliegende Beitrag für einen Methodenwechsel bei der Bearbeitung antiker jüdischer, insbesondere »apokalytischer« Texte. Das vorherrschende Verständnis des Genres »Apokalypse« schließt eine eschatologische Perspektive auf das künftige Gericht nach dem Tod ein. Die heuristischen Grenzen dieses Konzepts lassen sich bei einer Untersuchung des »Wächterbuchs« aus Hen(aeth) 1-36 mit seinen vielfältigen Zeitebenen aufzeigen. Die Praxis des Segnens erscheint dort als zeitlicher Indikator, als Fingerzeig des Göttlichen in der zeitlichen Sphäre, der von den Menschen nicht vollständig erfasst, aber in ihrer Vorstellungskraft vermittelt werden kann.

    Die apokalyptische Perspektive auf die Geschichte ist Ausdruck der apokalyptischen Weltanschauung und ihrer axiomatischen Aussagen. Zeit und Geschichte sind Eigenschaften der irdischen Realität: Sie sind endlich und verlaufen linear und unidirektional. Die apokalyptische Literatur behauptet, die wahre Bedeutung der Geschichte zu kennen, die der Gruppe, für die sie bestimmt ist, in Form einer Offenbarung aus der transzendenten Realität vermittelt wird. Apokalyptische Historiographie ist ihrem Wesen nach teleologisch, sie blickt panoramaartig auf ihre Gegenstände und bringt dabei eine umfassende Autorität und einen universalen Anspruch zur Geltung. Apokalyptische Spekulation ist grundsätzlich gruppenorientiert. Sie wendet sich immer exklusiv an eine bestimmte Gruppe und ist in einem engen Fokus auf deren aktuelle Situation gerichtet. Diese Eigenschaften machen die apokalyptische Literatur zu einem wirkungsvollen Instrument für die Konstruktion und Aufrechterhaltung der Gruppenidentität, insbesondere in Situationen, in denen diese Identität neu entsteht oder bedroht ist.

    Der vorliegende Band versammelt Beiträge, die in den Jahren 2007-2009 auf Workshops und internationalen Tagungen des Instituts für Septuaginta- und biblische Textforschung der Kirchlichen Hochschule/Protestant University Wuppertal-Bethel präsentiert wurden. Die Texte nehmen zum einen das Verhältnis der unterschiedlichen Textformen des griechischen Alten Testamentes untereinander, zum anderen die Frage der Zitation alttestamentlicher Texte im Neuen Testament in ihren thematischen Fokus. Untersucht werden die Bedeutung des antiochenischen/lukianischen Textes und der kaige-Rezension für die Rekonstruktion der ältesten griechischen Textform; die Frage, inwieweit diese Rezensionen für die atl. Zitate im NT von Bedeutung sind; das Phänomen der Auszeichnung von atl. Zitaten in Manuskripten des NT durch Diplé sowie die Frage, welche Textvorlage den Zitaten in den verschiedenen ntl. Büchern zugrunde liegt. Weitere Aufsätze widmen sich den modernen Editionsmöglichkeiten biblischer Texte. Der Text der Johannes-Apokalypse und die Rückfrage nach der Rezeption des Alten Testaments durch den Seher bilden einen abschließenden Schwerpunkt, der aufzeigt, dass die biblische Textforschung noch zahlreiche spannende Fragen - und Antworten - bereithält

    This paper is concerned with the American TV series Mr Robot and its imaginative articulation of key theological and philosophical questions pertaining to authority, reality and belief. As a work of imagination and critique it provides engaging and useful insights into the process of attempting to challenge the technological system that has infiltrated all personal and social relations today, whilst drawing upon a range of key religious ideas and concepts. The article, firstly, locates the series within a frame defined by the concepts of habit and hope as a way of engaging with its form and content. Secondly, it considers the apocalyptic event around which the drama revolves as a system re-set and new beginning that is revealing of a certain kind of truth alongside the subject who speaks to this truth. Thirdly, The central character Eliot's extraordinary ability for computer coding and encryption links to certain ideas about secrets and their role in the notion of authority as that sustained by being in possession of a key that can unlock and, by logical extension also lock, the sanctified data. Lastly, the article addresses perhaps the most powerful aspect of the drama, Eliot's paranoia and psychical fragmentation as he occupies this place on the edge of the system that sees him experience a mental and perceptual breakdown as the cost of his commitment to this act of erasure.

    J. J. Connington's 1923 British disaster novel Nordenholt's Million is an extreme, proto fascist work that responds to the interwar context of economic decline and social unrest in Britain. It utilises an apocalyptic scenario (soil denitrification) to draw an analogue of contemporary Britain and is uncompromising in its critique of conventional government systems and social decline. The novel depicts a situation where, to enable survival, the weak, dissenters and the unskilled are sacrificed in a drive towards creating a utopian future. Accordingly, in Nordenholt's Million the apocalypse is a transformative opportunity. It offers a wish fulfilment tale involving the emergence of strong, decisive leadership - based on many of the qualities of the Nietzchean Übermensch - to instigate a highly efficient, eugenically constructed ‘ideal' post-apocalyptic society. At the conclusion, a new civilisation emerges in which what the novel has framed as the social, political and economic problems of Britain have been overcome. Drawing upon Nietzchean ideas and the appeal of extreme politics, Nordenholt's Million tackles the morality of its politics by emphasising the necessity - and even desirability - of dictatorship in difficult circumstances. It presents dictatorship as the political solution to weak government and contemporary crises. Such a positive representation of dictatorship, even one apparently justified by catastrophe, could only have been written in a pre-World War II context. However, less than a century later, the extremes that the text presents as so appealing are echoed in in new social and political arenas informed by fear and discontent. Nordenholt's Million is then, a revealing and disconcerting novel that explores the appeal of fascism during periods of social and economic unease.

    The last book of the New Testament has inspired countless narratives and cultural productions. In the realm of popular music the Apocalypse was embraced as synonymous of imminent catastrophe, generating a dystopian discourse. As a tool for analysis, the concept of "critical dystopia" has built a useful bridge between apocalyptic menaces, re-enchantment of the world, and social protest. On the other hand, "authenticity" is a sacred dimension within rock, the antidote of commercialism. This paper has two parts: first a conceptual review of the state of the questions and debate involved; and second, an exposition of selected songs, followed by a summary of their main traits.

    The analysis of the genre apocalypse published in Semeia 14 (1979) relied on a classificatory approach, which identified core features of the genre, listed features that were typical but not necessary, and distinguished different types of apocalypses. The main difficulty encountered by such an approach is that genres have fuzzy edges. Some works that fit the definition are atypical of the genre, while some that do not have much in common with it. The emergence of prototype theory as a method of analysis is helpful in this regard, and allows for a less rigid kind of classification, without lapsing into the indeterminacy of family resemblances. Genres are recognized on the basis of a few clear exemplars. Other works may resemble them to a greater or lesser extent.

    Although the ways in which young adults relate to their own futures has been studied at length, the question of how they perceive the long-term, societal future has received comparatively less attention. This article considers how young adults relate to the long-term, societal future with reference to the concept of apocalypse. It draws on an analysis of 28 interviews in which religious and non-religious young adults were asked to discuss their perceptions of the long-term future. By comparing the eschatological depictions cited by religious respondents to the wider sample's views of the future, the findings of this study highlight the presence of a secular apocalyptic narrative. Moreover, while many of the non-religious respondents' understandings of apocalypse were derived from popular culture, this narrative was utilised in ways that extended beyond entertainment-based functions, and could be used to provide insight into the ways in which they related to the societal future.

Ballard's narrations do not create an ordinary apocalyptic apprehension of human abolition, but he enters the core of the apocalyptic theme by intertwining our world with an altering people's psyche who try to develop a new relationship with nature.     Abstract: Utopia is a universal concept, as manifested by the fact that it has attracted readers of five centuries and has influenced numerous writers. It is obvious that people, recognizing the abundant stupidities, corruptions, and injustice prevalent in their society, should attempt to plan a better system for living together. Whether they can reach such a society or not is the fundamental question found in most Vonnegut’s works. The utopian schemes in Vonnegut’s works such as the settlement of San Lorenzo in Cat's Cradle, almost always backfire, often bringing about more problems than they promise to solve. Therefore, in this paper, it is aimed to emphasize Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle regarding the concepts of utopia and dystopia as well as apocalyptical notions. Apocalypse can be investigated in Cat’s Cradle and it gives a serious quality to Vonnegut's work. The emptiness of mere survival is painfully described in Cat's Cradle, in which the earth is locked in frozen death

    Embodiment of apocalyptic imagination has been a major theme in which many writers have pointed it out especially from the midst of twentieth century onwards. Earth today is vulnerable and would be so dangerous for future generation from now on. Although, J. G. Ballard's narrations do not create an ordinary apocalyptic apprehension of human abolition, but he enters the core of the apocalyptic theme by intertwining our world with an altering people's psyche who try to develop a new relationship with nature. This paper examines Ballard's The Drowned World (1962) from the view of the human psyche in an apocalyptic setting. It follows and analyzes the characters of Dr. Robert Kerans (a biologist) and his team in which they are transformed in the story - both mentally and physically.
