"This study focuses on John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, and James Schuyler and the integrality of their homosexuality and their lives in New York City to their poetic and artistic expression. Ashbery, O'Hara, and Schuyler met because they were gay and shared their experiences-and their men-in their writings and in their lives. Rather than connecting the writings of these three New York Poets with established literary movements of the past, this study offers a provocative new reading that reflects the social, intellectual, political, and sexual views of today. In times of increasing conservative political views in America, these poets suggests different paths of poetic and political resistance. This study is of interests to readers of poetry on all levels but particularly for students of English, Gender Studies, or Gay Studies at universities and colleges. It also explores New York as a setting and offers fresh insights to its gender related landscape of bars, museums and entertainment venues. Finally, it provides social and literary strategies to offer literary and personal responses in a politically conservative climate. John Ashbery's recent death, plus the fact that my study contains parts of an unpublished interview with him, make my project particularly attractive and timely." --

"A vital hub of poetry readings, performance, publications and radical politics in 1960s New York, the Umbra Workshop was a cornerstone of the African American avant-garde. Bringing together new archival research and detailed close readings of poetry, A Black Arts Poetry Machine is a groundbreaking study of this important but neglected group of poets. David Grundy explores the work of such poets as Amiri Baraka, Lorenzo Thomas and Calvin Hernton and how their innovative poetic forms engaged with radical political responses to state violence and urban insurrection. Through this examination, the book highlights the continuing relevance of the work of the Umbra Workshop today and is essential reading for anyone interested in 20th-century American poetry"-- Introduction. This collection of specially commissioned essays brings together leading scholars and critics to define the American modernist canon. Tracing its origins back to Walt Whitman, this radical poetry is inspired by the concept of democracy vital to the American dream and extends across America from east to west and in varying hues - imagist, objectionist, Beat. New theoretical approaches applied to a wide range of poets make this the most comprehensive survey of American modernist poetry available.
