    Les sujets devaient généraliser des structures avec répétitions (SAR) ou sans répétitions (SSR). Un mécanisme symbolique général devrait traiter les SAR et SSR facilement; un mécanisme associationniste devrait traiter les SSR mieux que les SAR. Les sujets ont appris les SAR mais pas les SSR, les changements de structure évoquant des ERPs rapides seulement pour les SAR. Dans d'autres expériences, les sujets ont facilement généralisé des SAR avec les répétitions en des positions saillantes (en extrémité de séquence) mais pas en milieu de séquence. Nous avons étudié les limitations de computations plus linguistiques. Les sujets ont appris des règles phonotactiques en extrémité mais pas en milieu de mot. De même, les sujets ont extrait des règles avec des classes de syllabes seulement quand les syllabes critiques étaient en extrémitié mais pas en milieu de mot. En conclusion, l'esprit pourrait utiliser une boîte à outils computationnelle de primitives perceptives spécialisées et limitées Participants had to generalize repetition-based structures or ordinal structures without repetitions. General symbolic mechanisms should generalize both structures equally well; associationist mechanisms should process the ordinal structures better. Participants readily generalized repetition-based but not ordinal structures, structure changes elicting rapid ERPs only for repetition-based structures. When they found that participants could generalize repetition-based structures only when the repetitions were in sallient positions (in sequence edges but not middles). We then studied the limitations of more language-related computations. Participants learned phonotactic contraints in word-edges but not middles. In the next experiments, participants extracted category-based generalizations from speech streams, but only when the critical syllables were in word edges but not middles. In conclusion, the mind may use a computational toolbox of specialized and constrained perceptual primitives
