    "This complements our The Classic of Changes: A New Translation of the I Ching as Interpreted by Wang Bi (1994). Wang Bi's commentary was the most influential interpretation from the 3rd century to the late twelfth, when it was supplanted by those of Cheng Yi and Zhu Xi, the chief figures of the dominant school of Confucianism for the past eight centuries. A major revival of Confucian thought and practice had begun a century before Zhu Xi's time, incorporating some elements from Daoism and Buddhism. Zhu Xi wove together a selection of concepts and practices from this new movement with Classical Confucian teachings to create what is generally known as Neo-Confucianism. This was the dominant school of traditional Chinese thought into the 20th century, and is still the subject of much scholarly interest worldwide"--

    The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth familiarized itself with Christian Hebraism in the first half of the 16th century. “In Search of 'the Genuine Word of God'” sketches out the process in three chapters. The first one deals with the development of modern Hebrew studies in Western Europe, the second gives an account of the academic and religious level of Hebrew scholarship in the Commonwealth in the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th century, and the third is devoted to Polish translations of the Hebrew Bible, which were the most significant consequences of the reception of the West-European Christian Hebraism in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in Renaissance. Knowledge of Hebrew would be spread in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth through personal contacts of magnates and church dignitaries with the Western European Hebrew experts, through Jewish converts teaching Semitic languages, through foreign studies at European universities and through books. Polish Christian Hebraism was not creative; local humanists and reformers who communicated with adherents of Judaism contributed but little to domestic Hebrew studies. Only scholarly trends occasioned by different Christian confessions come to our notice. Hebrew studies were undertaken within universities or religious movements. The purpose was practical: to have direct access to the original Hebrew Bible for the sake of theological disputes or to have proper translation tools for rendering the Scripture in Polish.

    Although the notion of meaning has always been at the core of translation, the invariance of meaning has, partly due to practical constraints, rarely been challenged in Corpus-based Translation Studies. In answer to this, the aim of this book is to question the invariance of meaning in translated texts: if translation scholars agree on the fact that translated language is different from non-translated language with respect to a number of grammatical and lexical aspects, would it be possible to identify differences between translated and non-translated language on the semantic level too? More specifically, this books tries to formulate an answer to the following three questions: (i) how can semantic differences in translated vs non-translated language be investigated in a corpus-based study?, (ii) are there any differences on the semantic level between translated and non-translated language? and (iii) if there are differences on the semantic level, can we ascribe them to any of the (universal) tendencies of translation? In this book, I establish a way to visually explore semantic similarity on the basis of representations of translated and non-translated semantic fields. A technique for the comparison of semantic fields of translated and non-translated language called SMM++ (based on Helge Dyvik’s Semantic Mirrors method) is developed, yielding statistics-based visualizations of semantic fields. The SMM++ is presented via the case of inchoativity in Dutch (beginnen [to begin]). By comparing the visualizations of the semantic fields on different levels (translated Dutch with French as a source language, with English as a source language and non-translated Dutch) I further explore whether the differences between translated and non-translated fields of inchoativity in Dutch can be linked to any of the well-known universals of translation. The main results of this study are explained on the basis of two cognitively inspired frameworks: Halverson’s Gravitational Pull Hypothesis and Paradis’ neurolinguistic theory of bilingualism.

    Judith Sloman argues that the collections of translation that Dryden produced or contributed to are unified works of literature, not just miscellaneous collections. Through his selection of passages, through his use of language, and through changes and new emphases in the passages he translated Dryden could express his personality and convictions. In this book the author is therefore concerned in part with the connection between personality and art and in part with the political, religious, and literary context in which Dryden worked. Although Fables receives most emphasis, Ovid’s Epistles, Miscellany Poems, Sylvae, Examen Peticum, and the Aenesis are also examined in some detail. Dryden has a re-creative approach to translation, integrating groups of short poems into a whole with epic force. Just as multiplicity and complexity were facts of Dryden’s character and situation, they are characteristic of his composite poems, which create a unified and integrated whole out of a multiplicity of parts. Fables is thus not a unique entity in Dryden’s canon but the conclusion of a pattern that can be traced through his entire career as translator and poet

Walter, Greenberg and Tully have translated the text, while Kiraz has prepared the Syriac text in the west Syriac script, fully vocalized and pointed. The translation and the Syriac text are presented on facing pages so that both can be studied together. All readers are catered for: those wanting to read the text in English, those wanting to improve their grasp of Syriac by reading the original language along with a translation, and those wanting to focus on a fully vocalized Syriac text
