    This paper analyzes econometric models of the Davis, Haltiwanger and Schuh (1996) job creation rate. In line with the most recent job creation literature, we focus on employment-weighted OLS estimation. Our main theoretical result reveals that employment-weighted OLS estimation of DHS job creation rate models provides biased marginal effects estimates. The reason for this is that by definition, the error terms for entering and exiting firms are non-stochastic and non-zero. This violates the crucial mean independence assumption requiring that the conditional expectation of the errors is zero for all firms. Consequently, we argue that firm entries and exits should be analyzed with separate econometric models and propose alternative maximum likelihood estimators which are easy to implement. A small-scale Monte Carlo analysis and an empirical exercise using the population of Austrian firms point to the relevance of our analytical findings.

    Based on a three equations model for initial firm size, survival and firm growth we estimate firm-specific transition probabilities between size classes of the firm size distribution. This allows to analyze counterfactual scenarios that assess the impact of changes in exogenous variables on the intra-distribution dynamics of the firm size distribution. We find that a counterfactual decrease in average firm age increases the exit hazard of young firms, and at the same time reduces the probability to observe high growth firms. An increase in the industry-wide entry rate and an increase in market growth, by contrast, havw virtually no impact on the intra-distribution dynamics of the firm size distribution. Finally, a larger birth size increases the probability for the youngest and smallest firms to be fast growing ones. -- Firm growth ; survival ; entry size ; high growth firms ; counterfactual scenario analysis ; sample selection

    This paper analyzes the effects of trade and outsourcing on the transition probabilities of employment between sectors, using a dynamic multinomial logit framework with fixed effects. The data contain individual Austrian male workers over the period 1988-2001. Our results strongly support the view that international economic forces are important determinants of labor market turnover.     Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is not only a transfer of capital, but a complex bundle of capital and firm-specific assets like production and management know-how. In particular, the transfer of production know-how improves overall productivity of FDI-receiving firms and to some extent also that of the other firms due to spillovers. From a host country's point of view this kind of productivity improvement forms an important contribution to overall growth. The present note uses a small panel of Austrian manufacturing sectors and investigates this hypothesis empirically. Using a fiexible CES-framework we indeed find significant productivity improving effects of inward FDL Furthermore, there is some evidence that FDI induces labor-augmenting productivity effects. Thus, the job creation potential of FDI highlighted in previous studies is likely to be overestimated.

    For high wage countries, such as Austria, employment growth in foreign affiliates abroad is commonly expected to substitute for jobs at home. Estimates from bilateral data on the foreign and domestic activities of Austrian manufacturing firms over the period 1990-1996, covering the 10 most important host countries and 7 industrial sectors, indicate a significant and elastic substitution at the margin between employment at home and employment in foreign affiliates. However, this does not hold true of affiliates in Eastern Europe and there are significant differences across sectors. The size of total demand, as well as plant specific relative labour productivity, are also important determinants of relative labour demand.

    Using data on large and medium sized Austrian manufacturing firms this paper analyzes empirically in which way a high degree of export orientation and foreign production abroad, as two modes of serving foreign markets, are related to the growth performance of domestic production. Robust median regressions do not suggest that foreign production adversely affects firm growth at the domestic location. Exports to non-EU countries, in combination with foreign production, especially contribute to growth at the domestic location.
