Despite his claim to be a pioneer, Milton was not initiating a new line of thought-English poets had been debating about rhyme and its connections to liberty, freedom, and constraint since Queen Elizabeth's reign. The Fetters of Rhyme traces this dynamic history of rhyme from the 1590s through the 1670s. Rebecca Rush uncovers the surprising associations early modern readers attached to rhyming forms like couplets and sonnets, and she shows how reading poetic form from a historical perspective yields fresh insights into verse's complexities.Rush explores how early modern poets imagined rhyme as a band or fetter, comparing it to the bonds linking individuals to political, social, and religious communities. She considers how Edmund Spenser's sonnet rhymes stood as emblems of voluntary confinement, how John Donne's revival of the Chaucerian couplet signaled sexual and political radicalism, and how Ben Jonson's verse charted a middle way between licentious Elizabethan couplet poets and slavish sonneteers.     This book illustrates the problems connected with the body and the sign: the real body and the body of the text, somaticism and semiology (both as a general sign theory and in the medical sense as «symptomatology»). The author seeks to derive a more general principle from these two words, referring to the representation of experience in different literary texts. If we are talking about the representation of experience, we cannot, by any means, ignore the body that becomes the essential point of reference for human experience. This general principle aims at creating a matter of concept, a somatic criticism project, which is closely related to the issue of rhythm in literary texts - a rhythm understood as an intermediary between the body and the sense of the text.

    Geoffrey G. O’Brien’s third collection opens with a set of lyric experiments whose music and mutable syntax explore the social relations concealed in material things. O’Brien’s poems measure the "vague cadence" of daily life, testing both the value and limits of art in a time of vanishing publics and permanent war. The long title poem, written in a strict iambic prose, charts the disappearance of the poetic into the prosaic, of meter into the mundane, while reactivating the very possibilities it mourns: O’Brien’s prosody invests the prose of things with the intensities of verse. In the charged space of this hybrid form, objects become subjects and sense pivots mid-sentence into song: "The sun revolves around the earth revolves around the sun."

    Die vorliegende Studie untersucht auf der Grundlage interaktional-linguistischer Theorie und Methodologie Auswirkungen von Mehrsprachigkeit auf syntaktische und prosodische Strukturen in Alltagsgesprächen junger türkischstämmiger Frauen und Männer. Prosodische Phänomene stehen in der Sprachkontaktforschung nur selten im Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit; die Ergebnisse der Studie zeigen jedoch, dass Kategorien wie Rhythmus und Intonation eine wichtige Rolle als Substrateinflüsse spielen. Insbesondere bei der Analyse rhythmischer Muster, die eines der zentralen Merkmale des ethnischen Stils "Türkischdeutsch" darstellen, zeigt sich, dass einige prosodische und syntaktische Regeln des Deutschen flexibel gehandhabt werden, um Rhythmus zu konstituieren. Dies betrifft insbesondere Regeln zur Setzung von Wort- und Satzakzenten sowie Vollständigkeitsregeln von syntaktischen Phrasen. Allerdings bleibt es nicht bei einem einfachen Transfer sprachlicher Phänomene aus dem Türkischen: So werden die übernommenen Strukturen zum Teil verändert und in deutsche Strukturen integriert, und es entstehen neue, regelgeleitete Formen, die als Ressourcen für besondere Aufgaben im Gespräch fungieren

    Die vorliegende Studie untersucht auf der Grundlage interaktional-linguistischer Theorie und Methodologie Auswirkungen von Mehrsprachigkeit auf syntaktische und prosodische Strukturen in Alltagsgesprächen junger türkischstämmiger Frauen und Männer. Prosodische Phänomene stehen in der Sprachkontaktforschung nur selten im Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit; die Ergebnisse der Studie zeigen jedoch, dass Kategorien wie Rhythmus und Intonation eine wichtige Rolle als Substrateinflüsse spielen. Insbesondere bei der Analyse rhythmischer Muster, die eines der zentralen Merkmale des ethnischen Stils "Türkischdeutsch" darstellen, zeigt sich, dass einige prosodische und syntaktische Regeln des Deutschen flexibel gehandhabt werden, um Rhythmus zu konstituieren. Dies betrifft insbesondere Regeln zur Setzung von Wort- und Satzakzenten sowie Vollständigkeitsregeln von syntaktischen Phrasen. Allerdings bleibt es nicht bei einem einfachen Transfer sprachlicher Phänomene aus dem Türkischen: So werden die übernommenen Strukturen zum Teil verändert und in deutsche Strukturen integriert, und es entstehen neue, regelgeleitete Formen, die als Ressourcen für besondere Aufgaben im Gespräch fungieren
