Dabei werden neben theoretischen Texten vor allem die Librettodichtung, aber auch die Musik und die Gesangskunst unterschiedlicher Epochen in den Blick genommen. Die Leitfrage richtet sich auf die historisch verschiedenen Konzepte der Oper als intermediales Kunstwerk, dominant vom Text her betrachtet. Von den Orpheus-Opern ab 1600 reicht der Bogen bis zu D’Annunzios Entwurf einer Theaterpoetik des Medusenhaupts in dem Künstlerroman Il fuoco aus dem Jahr 1900. Written using the figures of Orpheus and Medusa as symbols, this book highlights contrasting theories on the poetry of Italian opera over three centuries. In addition to theoretical texts, it examines above all the poetic qualities of librettos, plus the music and singing techniques of different eras. Its underlying aim is to study the various historical concepts of opera as a communicative art form, predominantly from a textual perspective. The works it addresses range from operas about Orpheus from 1600 to D’Annunzio’s draft of a dramatic theory on the head of Medusa in his novel Il fuoco of 1900.

Umgekehrt ist Literatur heute ein milliardenschweres Konsumgut - und Literaturproduktion und -rezeption damit zwangsläufig von guter Werbung abhängig.Der Band versammelt literatur-, kultur- und medienwissenschaftliche Beiträge zur Funktion und Wirkmächtigkeit literarischer Sprache in Werbetexten, zu Literatur als Konsumgut sowie zu Werbung, Konsum und Überredungskunst als literarischen Topoi.     Since Žirmunskij the acmeists have been considered "overcomers of symbolism", which has led to many misunderstandings about the acmeist poetics. While the symbolists discovered the ambiguity of the word as the basis of metaphor, the acmeists are more aware of the connection between identity and plurality of the word. They understand the idea of ​​a complete independence of the poetic language from everyday language as an illusion and danger and sustainably pragmatic symbolist understanding of the language. Acmeistic writing tries to referentle to different levels and to create a kind of "new realism of writing". In their texts, the acmeists try to regain authenticity and reality through a greater temporal-spatial and cultural contextualization, the inclusion of reality substrates, greater involvement of everyday language, dialogical expressions, taking up a historical design language or a narrative Parlandogestik. - The work also offers a brief view of the reception of acmeism by Brodskij, Celan and Grünbein. Seit Žirmunskij gelten die Akmeisten als "Überwinder des Symbolismus", was zu vielen Missverständnissen über die akmeistische Poetik geführt hat. Während die Symbolisten die Vieldeutigkeit des Wortes als Grundlage der Metaphorik für sich entdeckten, sind sich die Akmeisten stärker des Zusammenhangs von Identität und Pluralität des Wortes bewusst. Sie begreifen die Idee einer völligen Unabhängigkeit der dichterischen Sprache von der Alltagssprache als Illusion und Gefahr und pragmatisieren das symbolistische Sprachverständnis nachhaltig. Akmeistisches Schreiben versucht sich auf verschiedenen Ebenen referentiell zu verankern und eine Art "neuen Realismus des Schreibens" zu erschaffen. Die Akmeisten versuchen dabei in ihren Texten, über eine größere zeitlich-räumliche und kulturelle Kontextualisierung, die Aufnahme von Realitätssubstraten, eine stärkere Einbindung der Alltagssprache, dialogische Wendungen, das Aufgreifen einer historischen Formensprache oder eine narrative Parlandogestik wieder Authentizität und Wirklichkeit zu gewinnen. - Die Arbeit bietet zugleich einen kurzen Ausblick auf die Rezeption des Akmeismus durch Brodskij, Celan und Grünbein.

    In an increasingly technologized and connected world, it seems as if noise must be increasing. Noise, however, is a complicated term with a complicated history. Noise can be traced through structures of power, theories of knowledge, communication, and scientific practice, as well as through questions of art, sound, and music. Thus, rather than assume that it must be increasing, this work has focused on better understanding the various ways that noise is defined, what that noise can do, and how we can use noise as a strategically political tactic. Noise Thinks the Anthropocene is a textual experiment in noise poetics that uses the growing body of research into noise as source material. It is an experiment in that it results from indeterminate means, alternative grammar, and experimental thinking. The outcome was not predetermined. It uses noise to explain, elucidate, and evoke (akin to other poetic forms) within the textual milieu in a manner that seeks to be less determinate and more improvisational than conventional writing. Noise Thinks the Anthropocene argues that noise poetics is a necessary form for addressing political inequality, coexistence with the (nonhuman) other, the ecological crisis, and sustainability because it approaches these issues as a system of interconnected fragments and excesses and thus has the potential to reach or envision solutions in novel ways.

    Trouble Songs is a hybrid serial work that tracks the appearance of the word “trouble” in 20th- and 21st-century American music. It reads (and sings) songs and poems, with reference to cultural events ranging from the death of a pop singer to the growth of popular resistance movements. The trouble singer invokes the word “trouble” in place of actual trouble—the song is a spell that conjures trouble (from bad luck and disaffection to infidelity, impotence, destitution, and the specter of death) in a temporary form that can be dis-spelled, if only for the length of the song. Singer and song also open a critical space for making trouble, for stirring the heart and mind. This space is a disjunction in time (and a superimposition of events) where singer and listener collaborate on meaning (un/)making as they temporarily transform trouble.

    Reading can be an act of consumption or an act of creation. Our “work reading” overlaps with our “pleasure reading,” and yet these two modes of reading engage with different parts of the self. It is sometimes passive, sometimes active, and can even be an embodied form.

     

    The contributors to this volume share their own histories of reading in order to reveal the shared pleasure that lies in this most solitary of acts – which is also, paradoxically, the act of most complete plenitude. Many of the contributors engage in academic writing, and several publish in other genres, including poetry and fiction; some contributors maintain an active online presence. All are engaged with reading’s capacity to stimulate and excite as well as to frustrate and confuse. The synergies and tensions of online reading and print reading animate these thirteen contributions, generating a sense of shared community. Together, the authors open their libraries to us.     Acta Slavica Estonica is an international series of publications on current issues of Russian and other Slavic languages, literatures and cultures. This volume is devoted to the interrelations of the prominent Estonian writer Jaan Kross (1920–2007) with Russian literature and culture. It includes contributions on the poetics of some of Kross' works ("The Czar's Madman", "Professor Martens' Departure", "Michelson's Matriculation", "The Third Range of Hills", "A Hard Night for Dr. Karell") and his translations from Russian (e.g. D. Samoilov's poetry and A. Griboedov's "The Misfortune of Being Clever"). Contributors include Lea Pild, Ljubov Kisseljova, Timur Guzairov, Tatiana Stepanischeva, Dmitry Ivanov, and Maria Tamm. An appendix includes the original Russian text of the autobiography of Johann Köler, the patriarch of Estonian national art and protagonist of one of Kross' novels. So far, this text has appeared only in fragments; the full version was found in the Archive of the Institute of Russian literature in St. Petersburg and is here published, with an extensive commentary, for the first time.

    Christoph Gschwind zeigt, wie Schillers frühe Dramen "Die Räuber", "Fiesko", "Kabale und Liebe" und "Don Karlos" wirkungspoetisch funktionieren. Anhand der Analyse von Schillers Frühwerk gibt er, basierend auf der Terminologie der analytischen Literaturwissenschaft, Antworten auf die allgemeine Frage nach dem Verhältnis zwischen Poesie und Philosophie – und auf die spezielle Frage nach der kognitiven Signifikanz literarisch-fiktionaler Texte. Die vorliegende Arbeit unterscheidet sich methodisch von einem klassisch-hermeneutischen Interpretationsverfahren, indem sie auf eine Rekonstruktion von emotiven und kognitiven Funktionen aus Schillers frühen Dramentexten zielt. Das Begriffsinstrumentarium der in der Schiller-Forschung vorherrschenden hermeneutischen Werkinterpretationen gründet häufig auf suggestiven Metaphernkomplexen. Im Kontext des analytischen Zugriffs auf die Texte Schillers wird dieser Tradition ein auf begriffliche Explikation abzielendes Analyse-Modell entgegengestellt, mit dem die z.T. unklaren Begriffe Schillers fassbarer werden. Durch die Rekonstruktion des ideengeschichtlichen Referenzrahmens zeigt sich Schillers Frühwerk schließlich auch als Projekt einer literarischen Aufklärung

    In der beginnenden Frühen Neuzeit zeichnet sich unter dem Einfluss der humanistischen Bildungsbewegung im Verhältnis zur antiken Literatur ein Umbruch im Vergleich zur mittelalterlichen Antikenrezeption ab: Die Schriften der Autoren des klassischen Altertums werden zum Teil wiederentdeckt, ediert und kommentiert; zahlreiche Übersetzungen werden angefertigt. In der Auseinandersetzung mit dem inhaltlichen und stilistischen Vorbild der antiken Werke ergeben sich in der Volkssprache vielfältige Veränderungen im Literatursystem, die den programmatisch an die antike Literatur anknüpfenden Neuansatz der frühneuzeitlichen Poetik durch Martin Opitz und andere vorbereiten, von diesen aber zugunsten französischer und niederländischer Vorbilder verschwiegen werden. In fünf Sektionen (Übersetzungsreflexion und Sprachbewusstsein, Institutionen und Funktionen, Intermedialität, Poetik und Rhetorik, Literaturvarianten und Gattungstransfer) wird der Beitrag der Übersetzungskultur für die Entwicklung der deutschen Sprache und Literatur der Frühen Neuzeit neu bestimmt

    Secular criticism is a term invented by Edward Said to denote not a theory but a practice that counters the tendency of much modern thinking to reach for a transcendentalist comfort zone, the very space philosophy wrested away from religion in the name of modernity. Using this notion as a compass, this book reconfigures recent secularism debates on an entirely different basis, by showing (1) how the secular imagination is closely linked to society’s radical poiesis, its capacity to imagine and create unprecedented forms of worldly existence; and (2) how the space of the secular animates the desire for a radical democratic politics that overturns inherited modes of subjugation, whether religious or secularist.Gourgouris’s point is to disrupt the co-dependent relation between the religious and the secular—hence, his rejection of fashionable languages of postsecularism—in order to engage in a double critique of heteronomous politics of all kinds. For him, secular criticism is a form of political being: critical, antifoundational, disobedient, anarchic, yet not negative for negation’s sake but creative of new forms of collective reflection, interrogation, and action that alter not only the current terrain of dominant politics but also the very self-conceptualization of what it means to be human.Written in a free and combative style and given both to close readings of texts and to gazing off into the broad horizon, these essays cover a range of issues—historical and philosophical, archaic and contemporary, literary and political—that ultimately converge in the significance of contemporary radical politics: the assembly movements we have seen in various parts of the world in recent years. The secular imagination demands a radical pedagogy and unlearning a great many established thought patterns. Its most important dimension is not battling religion per se but dismantling theological politics of sovereignty in favor of radical conditions for social autonomy

In this respect they take seriously the Reformation’s insistence that eschatology is a historical phenomenon. Yet these poets are also reacting to the Regicide, and, as a result, their works explore very modern questions about the nature of events, what it means for a significant historical occasion to happen.Lyric Apocalypse argues that Milton’s and Marvell’s lyrics challenge any retrospective understanding of events, including one built on a theory of revolution. Instead, these poems show that there is no "after" to the apocalypse, that if we are going to talk about change, we should do so in the present, when there is still time to do something about it. For both of these poets, lyric becomes a way to imagine an apocalyptic event that would be both hopeful and new

Welche Modelle von Katharsis waren Aristoteles geläufig, in welchem Verhältnis stehen sie zueinander? Auf der Grundlage eines ausführlichen Vorworts erstellen die Beiträge von Spezialisten eine Übersicht zu dem jeweiligen Begriffsgebrauch in Biologie, Medizin, Ritus, Kultus, Musiktheorie, Psychologie und Philosophie. Sie bestimmen dabei in einer breit angelegten interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit die spezifische Funktionsweise der jeweiligen Katharsiskonzeptionen, so dass die Voraussetzungen des poetologischen Begriffs deutlich werden. Main description: Aristotle uses the concept of catharsis at various points in his writings–in his works on reproduction, on zoology, on physics, and on politics. In his Poetics, the concept is deployed metaphorically in order to determine the purpose of tragedy. Which models of catharsis was Aristotle acquainted with, and what was the relationship between them? Proceeding from a detailed foreword, the specialist papers provide an overview of the use of the term in the different areas of biology, medicine, ritual, cult, music theory, psychology and philosophy. Working on a broad collaborative interdisciplinary basis, the authors determine the specific functions of the various conceptions of catharsis and thus clarify the foundations for the concept in poetology.

    This study transforms our understanding of Roman love elegy, an important and complex corpus of poetry that flourished in the late first century b.c.e. Sharon L. James reads key poems by Propertius, Tibullus, and Ovid for the first time from the perspective of the woman to whom they are addressed—the docta puella, or learned girl, the poet's beloved. By interpreting the poetry not, as has always been done, from the stance of the elite male writers—as plaint and confession—but rather from the viewpoint of the women—thus as persuasion and attempted manipulation—James reveals strategies and substance that no one has listened for before

    Myung Mi Kim's Commons weighs on the most sensitive of scales the minute grains of daily life in both peace and war, registering as very few works of literature have done our common burden of being subject to history. Abstracting colonization, war, immigration, disease, and first-language loss until only sparse phrases remain, Kim takes on the anguish and displacement of those whose lives are embedded in history.Kim's blank spaces are loaded silences: openings through which readers enter the text and find their way. These silences reveal gaps in memory and articulate experiences that will not translate into language at all. Her words retrieve the past in much the same way the human mind does: an image sparks another image, a scent, the sound of bombs, or conversation. These silences and pauses give the poems their structure.Commons's fragmented lyric pushes the reader to question the construction of the poem. Identity surfaces, sinks back, then rises again. On this shifting ground, Kim creates meaning through juxtaposed fragments. Her verse, with its stops and starts, its austere yet rich images, offers splinters of testimony and objection. It negotiates a constantly changing world, scavenging through scraps of experience, spaces around words, and remnants of emotion for a language that enfolds the enormity of what we cannot express

    Harryette Mullen's fifth poetry collection, Sleeping with the Dictionary, is the abecedarian offspring of her collaboration with two of the poet's most seductive writing partners, Roget's Thesaurus and The American Heritage Dictionary. In her ménage à trois with these faithful companions, the poet is aware that while Roget seems obsessed with categories and hierarchies, the American Heritage, whatever its faults, was compiled with the assistance of a democratic usage panel that included black poets Langston Hughes and Arna Bontemps, as well as feminist author and editor Gloria Steinem. With its arbitrary yet determinant alphabetical arrangement, its gleeful pursuit of the ludic pleasure of word games (acrostic, anagram, homophone, parody, pun), as well as its reflections on the politics of language and dialect, Mullen's work is serious play. A number of the poems are inspired or influenced by a technique of the international literary avant-garde group Oulipo, a dictionary game called S+7 or N+7. This method of textual transformation--which is used to compose nonsensical travesties reminiscent of Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky"--also creates a kind of automatic poetic discourse.Mullen's parodies reconceive the African American's relation to the English language and Anglophone writing, through textual reproduction, recombining the genetic structure of texts from the Shakespearean sonnet and the fairy tale to airline safety instructions and unsolicited mail. The poet admits to being "licked all over by the English tongue," and the title of this book may remind readers that an intimate partner who also gives language lessons is called, euphemistically, a "pillow dictionary."

    When, in the third century B.C.E., the Ptolemies became rulers in Egypt, they found themselves not only kings of a Greek population but also pharaohs for the Egyptian people. Offering a new and expanded understanding of Alexandrian poetry, Susan Stephens argues that poets such as Callimachus, Theocritus, and Apollonius proved instrumental in bridging the distance between the two distinct and at times diametrically opposed cultures under Ptolemaic rule. Her work successfully positions Alexandrian poetry as part of the dynamic in which Greek and Egyptian worlds were bound to interact socially, politically, and imaginatively.The Alexandrian poets were image-makers for the Ptolemaic court, Seeing Double suggests; their poems were political in the broadest sense, serving neither to support nor to subvert the status quo, but to open up a space in which social and political values could be imaginatively re-created, examined, and critiqued. Seeing Double depicts Alexandrian poetry in its proper context—within the writing of foundation stories and within the imaginative redefinition of Egypt as "Two Lands"—no longer the lands of Upper and Lower Egypt, but of a shared Greek and Egyptian culture
