    In his carmina, Venantius Fortunatus (sixth century) has left us three figurate poems that depict the cross as an image, while its verses describe the cross textually. He is thus an author who completely detaches figurate poems from the pagan tradition and inscribes them in the Christian one. The aim of this essay is to examine these poems from a pictorialist perspective. To this end, after a brief presentation of all three poems, they are considered, firstly, as ekphraseis that draw on a three-step representation: The figure depicts a cross that points to transcendence, the verses describe it, and they have the potential to evoke an additional mental image in the reader. Secondly, I examine what image and text, and thus the figurate poems as intermedial products, gain through the respective other medium. This results, thirdly, in an analysis of the figurate poems within the categories of iconism, aniconism, and anti-iconism.

    Sprachgebrauch in der bildenden Kunst beobachten: geht das, ist das sinnvoll? – Ja, das ist es. Denn diese ganz andere Perspektive kann seine Vielfalt und Komplexität auf eigene, auf sinnliche Weise erfahrbar machen. Die vorliegende Studie ist deshalb wie ein Gang durch eine Ausstellung strukturiert: Anhand von mehr als achtzig Bildern werden wesentliche Konstellationen sprachlichen Handelns betrachtet und auf ihre prototypischen Bedingtheiten hin beleuchtet. Der ungewöhnliche Zugang über Bilder schafft exemplarische Einsichten, die durch linguistische, kunstwissenschaftliche und philosophische Aspekte interdisziplinär vertieft und zu einer eigenständigen Form sinnenbezogener Erkenntnis zusammengeführt werden. Die Leser werden dazu eingeladen, dies mit zu beobachten, zu reflektieren und aktiv nachzuvollziehen. Investigating the use of language in pieces of visual art enables a sensual experience of its complexity. This study is therefore built like an exhibition: Based on over eighty paintings it scrutinises versatile constellations of language use and highlights its prototypical contingency. This unique and unusual approach to language enables exemplary insights which are substantiated by interdisciplinary aspects of linguistics, art history, and philosophy. This facilitates an independent and unique form of cognizance. This study invites the reader to participate in this exhibition by observing, reflecting, and comprehending actively the complexity of language use in visual art.
