The collection offers a selection of fascinating passages, and whole texts, many of which are not anthologised or translated anywhere else. It explores little-known byways of Arthurian legend and stories of real-life crime and punishment; women’s voices tell history, write letters, berate pagans; advice is offered on how to win friends and influence people, how to cure people’s ailments and how to keep clear of the law; and stories from the Bible are retold with commentary, together with guidance on prayer and confession.

    Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Studie steht eine literaturwissenschaftliche Erschließung der deutschen und lateinischen Schriften des Dominikanerobservanten und Ordenschronisten Johannes Meyer (1422/23-1485). Auf der Grundlage einer überlieferungsgeschichtlich fundierten Analyse fünf verschiedener Textkomplexe, mit denen Meyers monastisches Schrifttum repräsentativ erfasst ist, wird eine Einordnung des inhaltlich und texttypologisch weit gefächerten Œuvres nicht allein unter ordens- und kulturgeschichtlicher Perspektive, sondern vor allem mit Blick auf seine Positionierung im Kontext der spätmittelalterlichen 'Frömmigkeitstheologie' sowie hinsichtlich seines originären Beitrags für die deutsche Literatur des 15. Jahrhunderts versucht. Es tritt damit ein Textcorpus neu in den Blick, das nicht zuletzt für das Verständnis des Verhältnisses von 'Reform' und 'Reformation' weiterführende Impulse und Akzente zu setzen verspricht The Dominican Johannes Meyer (1422/23–1485) left a body of texts that cover a broad range of topics and sources. The study examines the specific literary patterns and textual strategies found in his texts, and employs discourse analysis to ask how Meyer positioned himself in the context of late medieval monastic reform, the theology of piety, and the reception of mysticism, and to assess his contribution to 15th-century German literature

    This article describes The Gateway to the Syriac Saints, a database project developed by the Syriac Reference Portal (www.syriaca.org). It is a research tool for the study of Syriac saints and hagiographic texts. The Gateway to the Syriac Saints is a two-volume database: 1) Qadishe and 2) Bibliotheca Hagiographica Syriaca Electronica (BHSE). Hagiography, the lives of the saints, is a multiform genre. It contains elements of myth, history, biblical exegesis, romance, and theology. The production of saints’ lives blossomed in late antiquity alongside the growth of the cult of the saints. Scholars have attended to hagiographic traditions in Greek and Latin, but many scholars have yet to discover the richness of Syriac hagiographic literature: the stories, homilies, and hymns on the saints that Christians of the Middle East told and preserved. It is our hope that our database will give scholars and students increased access to these traditions to generate new scholarship. The first volume, Qadishe or “saints” in Syriac, is a digital catalogue of saints or holy persons venerated in the Syriac tradition. Some saints are native to the Syriac-speaking milieu, whereas others come from other linguistic or cultural traditions. Through the translation of their hagiographies and the diffusion of saints’ cults in the late antique world, saints were adopted, “imported,” and appropriated into Syriac religious memory. The second volume, the BHSE, focuses on Syriac hagiographic texts. The BHSE contains the titles of over 1000 Syriac stories, hymns, and homilies on saints. It also includes authors’ or hagiographers’ names, the first and last lines of the texts (in Syriac, English, and French), bibliographic information, and the names of the manuscripts containing these hagiographic works. We have also listed modern and ancient translations of these works. All of the data in the Gateway to the Syriac Saints has been encoded in TEI, and it is fully searchable, linkable, and open.

    This article contains the unpublished Syriac text of the Story of the Mystery Hidden in the Eucharistic Offering, an anonymous hagiographical composition that tells the story of the conversion of a Muslim king. The text of the Story, published on the basis of two manuscripts (Birmingham, Cadbury Research Library, Mingana Syr. 71, and Manchester, John Rylands Library, Syr. 59), is accompanied by an English translation and discussion of its message.

    Im Mittelalter war Heiligenverehrung zentraler Bestandteil des religiösen Lebens. Entsprechend hat die Forschung vermehrt Heiligenviten und narrative Quellen des Heiligenkultes untersucht, dabei aber häufig die liturgische Realität dieser Kulte vergessen. In der vorliegenden Monographie hingegen werden bewusst die liturgische Verehrung von Heiligen - die ‚Hagiopraxis’ - sowie ihre Quellen und Medien in den Vordergrund gestellt. Die Autorin geht dabei von der Voraussetzung aus, dass Heilige im Mittelalter nicht nur in narrativen und schriftlichen Quellen, sondern vor allem in der liturgischen Aufführungspraxis, ihren Texten und Trägern (den liturgischen Handschriften) konstruiert und propagiert wurden. Es waren vor allem solche liturgisch kreierte Figuren, die als Fürbitter und Zuhörer, als Modell und Beschützer, quasi als wahre ‚christliche Helden‘ vom mittelalterlichen Publikum wahrgenommen wurden. Diese innovative Sichtweise wird im vorliegenden Band an einem ausgewählten Heiligenkult expliziert, nämlich am dem des heiligen Zeno, des Patrons der oberitalienischen Stadt Verona. During the Middle Ages the cult of saints was an essential part of religious life. As a result, the study of saints’ lives and other narrative sources is a well-established research area for medievalists. But these studies often marginalize liturgical sources and rarely take the reality of medieval saints’ cults into account. This volume, however, focuses on liturgical worship or, as the author calls it, ‘Hagiopraxis’, and its sources and manuscripts. This approach rests on the methodological assumption that saints in the Middle Ages were constructed and propagated not only in Vitae and Passiones, but primarily in liturgical practice, in its texts and artefacts. It was mostly these liturgically constructed saints who were called upon for help and protection, and who could act as role models for the medieval audience. This innovative approach is exemplified in this volume through the study of the medieval cult of Saint Zeno, patron of the north Italian city of Verona.

    Catherine of Alexandria was one of the most venerated female saints of the Middle Ages. This volume presents verse legend VIII from the Dominican St. Katharinental Convent at Dießenhofen, one of the most extensive and literarily ambitious German versions of the legend of Catherine. It is the first volume to provide an edition of the legend and analyzes it against the backdrop of Latin and German tradition Katharina von Alexandrien zählt zu den meistverehrten weiblichen Heiligen. Ihre Legende erfuhr im Hoch- und Spätmittelalter in zahlreichen lateinischen wie volkssprachigen Vers- und Prosaredaktionen, daneben in Mirakeln, Hymnen, Gebeten, Offizien, Predigten und Spielen weite Verbreitung. Die hier erstmals edierte, bisher nahezu unbeachtet gebliebene mittelhochdeutsche Verslegende VIII stellt eine der umfangreichsten und ambitioniertesten deutschsprachigen Bearbeitungen dar. Im ersten Viertel des 14. Jahrhunderts aus dem Dominikanerinnenkloster St. Katharinental bei Dießenhofen überliefert, ist Verslegende VIII mit ihrem Akzent auf der christlich-theologischen Unterweisung auch als Zeugnis für die spätmittelalterliche Frauenfrömmigkeit zu lesen. Als Grundlage der Edition dienen Codex Donaueschingen 116, welcher diese Fassung als einziger vollständig überliefert, und Codex 240 der Stiftsbibliothek Engelberg, der einzelne Passagen aus Verslegende VIII in die Abschrift einer anderen Fassung inseriert. Der edierte Text wird zu Studienzwecken in vorsichtig normalisierter Form geboten und von Lesehilfen begleitet. Eine ausführliche Einleitung erschließt Verslegende VIII vor dem Hintergrund der lateinischen und deutschen Tradition

    The study of emotion in Islamic hagiology remains largely uninterrogated, as visible in elliptical descriptions that classify particular texts, bodily gestures, or utterances as “emotive.” I advocate for a shift from taxonomic approaches to emotion to a focus on function in narrative hagiographies. I argue that emotion provides a rich analytic category for understanding the dynamic relationship between texts and bodies in the hagiographical process, as well as the multiplicity of bodies that are involved or implicated. To illustrate this framework, I provide readings of narratives in the sīra (biographies of Muḥammad) which depict bodily manifestations of awe when in Muḥammad’s presence. Endorsing the position that the hagiographical process is constantly under negotiation, these analyses reveal that emotional practices are crucial to understanding the relationality between exemplary persons, biographers, characters, and readers.

    In this article, I examine what narratives of enraptured madness (jadhb) and the figure of the mad female saint (majdhuba) reveal about the articulation of gendered saintly orthodoxy within the modern Moroccan hagiographical compendium Salwat al-Anfas wa-Muhadathat al-Akyas bi-man Uqbira min al-"Ulama' wa'l-Sulaha' bi-Fas (The entertainment of souls and the discourse of the wise concerning the scholars and the Sufis who in Fez met their demise). Written by the nineteenth-century Moroccan historian and Sufi, Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Kattani, this text draws on and also plays with the genre of Sufi hagiography. Because it is arranged as a ‘tomb visiting guide,’ it appears to scatter traditional vestiges of Sufi hierarchies and rhetorical organization strategies, presenting a composite picture of Sufi sainthood. However, al-Kattani also reaffirms entrenched gendered hierarchies of spiritual authority. Throughout Salwat al-Anfas, al-Kattani's depiction of the majdhuba acts as a literary foil for the paradigm of the "good Sufi woman" or normative female sainthood. Although al-Kattani includes narratives of the majdhuba that depict potentially transgressive gender performances experienced within the state of enraptured madness - such as uncovering the body, growing a beard, babbling, gossiping, and acting aggressively in public spaces - these deviant performances serve to solidify normative modes of sainthood. Or, in other words, enraptured madness sticks to certain saints more than others, creating gendered hierarchies of spiritual authority.

What special traits gave both saints and demoniacs their ability to read minds? Why were mothers who died in childbirth buried in unconsecrated ground? Each of these phenomena, as diverse as they are, offers evidence for a distinctive medieval idea of the person in sharp contrast to that of the modern "subject" of "individual."Starting from the premise that the medieval self was more permeable than its modern counterpart, Newman explores the ways in which the self's porous boundaries admitted openness to penetration by divine and demonic spirits and even by other human beings. She takes up the idea of "coinherence," a state familiarly expressed in the amorous and devotional formula "I in you and you in me," to consider the theory and practice of exchanging the self with others in five relational contexts of increasing intimacy. Moving from the outside in, her chapters deal with charismatic teachers and their students, mind-reading saints and their penitents, lovers trading hearts, pregnant mothers who metaphorically and literally carry their children within, and women and men in the throes of demonic obsession. In a provocative conclusion, she sketches some of the far-reaching consequences of this type of personhood by drawing on comparative work in cultural history, literary criticism, anthropology, psychology, and ethics.The Permeable Self offers medievalists new insight into the appeal and dangers of the erotics of pedagogy; the remarkable influence of courtly romance conventions on hagiography and mysticism; and the unexpected ways that pregnancy—often devalued in mothers—could be positively ascribed to men, virgins, and God. The half-forgotten but vital idea of coinherence is of relevance far beyond medieval studies, however, as Newman shows how it reverberates in such puzzling phenomena as telepathy, the experience of heart transplant recipients who develop relationships with their deceased donors, the phenomenon of psychoanalytic transference, even the continuities between ideas of demonic possession and contemporary understandings of obsessive-compulsive disorder.In The Permeable Self Barbara Newman once again confirms her status as one of our most brilliant and thought-provoking interpreters of the Middle Ages

    Catherine of Alexandria was one of the most venerated female saints of the Middle Ages. This volume presents verse legend VIII from the Dominican St. Katharinental Convent at Dießenhofen, one of the most extensive and literarily ambitious German versions of the legend of Catherine. It is the first volume to provide an edition of the legend and analyzes it against the backdrop of Latin and German tradition Katharina von Alexandrien zählt zu den meistverehrten weiblichen Heiligen. Ihre Legende erfuhr im Hoch- und Spätmittelalter in zahlreichen lateinischen wie volkssprachigen Vers- und Prosaredaktionen, daneben in Mirakeln, Hymnen, Gebeten, Offizien, Predigten und Spielen weite Verbreitung. Die hier erstmals edierte, bisher nahezu unbeachtet gebliebene mittelhochdeutsche Verslegende VIII stellt eine der umfangreichsten und ambitioniertesten deutschsprachigen Bearbeitungen dar. Im ersten Viertel des 14. Jahrhunderts aus dem Dominikanerinnenkloster St. Katharinental bei Dießenhofen überliefert, ist Verslegende VIII mit ihrem Akzent auf der christlich-theologischen Unterweisung auch als Zeugnis für die spätmittelalterliche Frauenfrömmigkeit zu lesen. Als Grundlage der Edition dienen Codex Donaueschingen 116, welcher diese Fassung als einziger vollständig überliefert, und Codex 240 der Stiftsbibliothek Engelberg, der einzelne Passagen aus Verslegende VIII in die Abschrift einer anderen Fassung inseriert. Der edierte Text wird zu Studienzwecken in vorsichtig normalisierter Form geboten und von Lesehilfen begleitet. Eine ausführliche Einleitung erschließt Verslegende VIII vor dem Hintergrund der lateinischen und deutschen Tradition

    Less than a hundred years after Thomas Becket’s martyrdom at the hands of four of Henry II’s knights, his Anglo-Norman mother was transformed into a pagan princess who abandoned faith and kin for Becket’s father and Christianity. Pagès uses this wholly fictional legend about the saint to examine the place and function of conversion and mission in The Man of Law’s Tale, juxtaposing the tale with the legend about Becket’s mother to assess the power (or lack thereof) of baptism in late medieval English works. This new comparative study thus provides productive insights into the complexity of the emergence of the concept of race in medieval English culture and literature

    Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Studie steht eine literaturwissenschaftliche Erschließung der deutschen und lateinischen Schriften des Dominikanerobservanten und Ordenschronisten Johannes Meyer (1422/23-1485). Auf der Grundlage einer überlieferungsgeschichtlich fundierten Analyse fünf verschiedener Textkomplexe, mit denen Meyers monastisches Schrifttum repräsentativ erfasst ist, wird eine Einordnung des inhaltlich und texttypologisch weit gefächerten Œuvres nicht allein unter ordens- und kulturgeschichtlicher Perspektive, sondern vor allem mit Blick auf seine Positionierung im Kontext der spätmittelalterlichen 'Frömmigkeitstheologie' sowie hinsichtlich seines originären Beitrags für die deutsche Literatur des 15. Jahrhunderts versucht. Es tritt damit ein Textcorpus neu in den Blick, das nicht zuletzt für das Verständnis des Verhältnisses von 'Reform' und 'Reformation' weiterführende Impulse und Akzente zu setzen verspricht The Dominican Johannes Meyer (1422/23–1485) left a body of texts that cover a broad range of topics and sources. The study examines the specific literary patterns and textual strategies found in his texts, and employs discourse analysis to ask how Meyer positioned himself in the context of late medieval monastic reform, the theology of piety, and the reception of mysticism, and to assess his contribution to 15th-century German literature

    Erzählungen vom vorbildhaften Leben als heilig erachteter Menschen stehen von der Spätantike bis zur Reformation im Zentrum christlicher Literatur. Ein prominentes Beispiel ist die Legende von Sankt Georg, die nicht nur in verschiedenen lateinischen Fassungen überliefert ist, sondern auch zwischen 900 und 1600 wiederholt in deutscher Sprache bearbeitet wurde. Von besonderem Interesse für die germanistische Mediävistik ist der Heilige Georg Reinbots von Durne – ein um 1240 im Auftrag Ottos II. von Bayern verfasster höfischer Legendenroman, der auf 6134 Versen die heroische Vorgeschichte des Heiligen, seine Konfrontation mit den Repräsentanten des Römischen Reichs und schließlich sein langes Martyrium exponiert. Der literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlich bedeutsame Text wird hier erstmals in einer Studienausgabe mit neuhochdeutscher Übertragung und Kommentar vorgelegt. Enthalten sind in der Ausgabe außerdem mit dem althochdeutschen Georgslied, der lateinischen Georgslegende aus der Legenda Aurea, einer deutschen Übertragung aus der Elsässischen Legenda Aurea sowie Georg Hagers Meisterlied Der Ritter Sant Georg vier kürzere legendarische Texte, die im Seminargebrauch vergleichend untersucht werden können Reinbot's von Durne courtly romance Saint George, published around 1240, is among the most significant medieval narratives of the life of Saint George. In around 6,000 verses it narrates the early life of the Saint, his confrontation with the emissaries of the Roman Empire, and, finally, his long martyrdom. The text is presented here for the first time in a student edition with a New High German translation and commentary
