    Spricht man Büchern eine anthropomorphe Daseinsberechtigung zu, so muss man nicht nur der Frage nach ihrem Ursprung nachgehen, sondern auch der Frage nach dem Fortbestand ihrer Existenz. Der Blick auf die digitale Lebensform von Büchern wirft Fragen nach Modalität, Medialität und Materialität auf und lädt zu einem Gedankenspiel zu Transformationsprozessen von Lettern zu Daten ein. Es gibt unterschiedliche Möglichkeiten der Übertragung eines analogen Buches in seine digitale Form, z.B. als digitales Faksimile, hybride Veröffentlichung oder digital born. Im Hyperraum bewegt sich das Buch in einer Form der forensischen bzw. formalen Materialität: Die durch Daten hinterlassenen physikalischen Spuren werden durch bestimmte Verfahren sichtbar und die Haptik des Buchs aus Papier verschiebt sich vom Blättern und Wenden hin zum Wischen und Tippen auf dem Medienträger. Der „Hyperfluss“ verweist sowohl auf die immense Fülle bereits digitalisierter Bücher, als auch auf die sich im Übergang befindlichen Stadien von Büchern und Standards sowie die gewonnene Flexibilität, die auch durch die parallele Existenz von analog und digital zustande kommt.

    Der Lesernutzen im Fokus: Digitale Lesemedien bieten gegenüber Printprodukten eine reiche Funktionsvielfalt wie z.B. Suche, Lesezeichen- und Annotationsverwaltung, Social Reading usw. Dennoch verstoßen viele digitale Textangebote gegen erprobte Usability-Richtlinien, was ihre Rezeption erschwert und Leser lieber zur gedruckten Variante greifen lässt. Diese Dissertation entwirft ein Referenzmodell für Verlage, mit dem sich Usability gezielt planen, gestalten und überprüfen lässt und zeigt seine empirische Umsetzung mittels eines Methodenmixes in einer vergleichenden Studie von Fachmagazin-Apps aus der Praxis. Sibylle Kunz lehrt als Professorin für Medieninformatik an der IUBH und forscht im Bereich digitale Lesemedien und Software-Usability. Focusing on the reader’s benefit: Digital reading media offer a wide range of functions compared to print media: search functions, bookmarking, annotations, social reading, etc. However, they often fail to meet basic usability requirements, hindering reception and driving readers back to print media. This dissertation designs a reference model and derives a set of suitable methods from it with which to measure and improve the usability of digital reading media, including heuristic evaluation, user observation and eye-tracking, which it empirically tests on professional journal apps in a multiple case study. Sibylle Kunz is a professor of media computer science at IUBH International University, conducting research on digital reading media and their usability.

    The COVID-19 situation has accelerated the adoption of e-commerce across the world. While, globally, there has been an increase in the share of e-commerce in total retail sales, there are variations in e-commerce adoption across countries and the difference is obtrusive when one compares developed countries and emerging market economies. This paper undertakes a comparative assessment of e-commerce adoption by the G20 countries and, in doing so, it benchmarks the G20 members across different indicators that determine e-commerce adoption. Based on secondary data, the paper presents some stylized facts, discusses the regulatory scenario with respect to e-commerce in G20 countries and identifies key constraints to e-commerce adoption in the comparatively poor performers. It is found that, overall, most emerging market economies are not very well prepared to support e-commerce adoption. Rather, compared to the developed countries, emerging market economies perform poorly on indicators related to access and use of digital technology, financial inclusion, postal reliability, and electronic security. The paper found that the emerging market economies are severely affected by inadequate infrastructure, digital illiteracy, and low use of digital payments by enterprises. Whereas there is no dearth of regulations on e-commerce business, nevertheless a uniform approach for regulating e-commerce operations is missing in the case of some countries. Moreover, different countries have different positions with respect to data privacy and protection. The paper recommends that G20 members should work together to bridge the adoption gap, enhance micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) participation in e-commerce through enhanced financial assistance, build cooperation for adopting common standards, and encourage countries to adopt national policies with the vision to promote e-commerce.

    We describe the need for resilience in supply chains given the recent stream of disruptions that the world has experienced. Based on recent events, we identify different types of disruptions that have challenged the resilience of supply chains. Subsequently, we describe the different digital tools used in supply chains and their success or failure in increasing the resilience of supply chains. We conclude that some digital solutions help to increase resilience, while others have almost no effect, namely systems integration, artificial intelligence (AI), and simulation. We propose a classification of how to relate the type of disruption to the effective digital tool. We finish by proposing a framework for future research to validate digital solutions that increase reliability. We also conclude that some tools, including 3D printing and blockchain, might have a role in the future in increasing the resilience of supply chains, but that today there is no evidence of a positive effect.

    Across different metrics, the ICT performance of the Philippines remains subpar compared to ASEAN members and other countries at the same level of development. The quality of the country's ICT regulatory environment, composed of regulatory authority, regulatory mandate, regulatory regime, and competition model, is significantly below what is considered international best practice, consequently impeding the use of various technological solutions available to bridge the gap in digital inequality. Although significant policy changes have recently been introduced, more reforms are needed to achieve inclusive and accelerated digital connectivity. Priorities include reforming the licensing regime, formulating a spectrum policy and plan, and reinventing the NTC to ensure regulatory independence.

    The size of the digital sector is significant and comprises various activities, processes and industries. The interdependence of different markets within and across segments of the digital value chain implies that barriers to entry and expansion in one industry can have far reaching effects on the growth of the rest of the digital sector and the economy, more widely. Ensuring robust competition across the digital value chain is therefore of paramount importance. Internet connectivity is the most critical element of the value chain as it links the various participants in the digital sector to the final users or consumers. It is also the segment that has highest barriers to entry. Although natural barriers exist, regulatory and strategic barriers further constrain competition. Thus, access regulations will need to be strengthened and enforced. An open access framework and increased transparency will facilitate the growth of broadband. Adapting M&A guidelines, effective cross-sectoral regulatory cooperation, and investment in training will also reduce barriers to entry and expansion. Partnerships between the private and public sectors will be necessary as well to significantly reduce the digital divide in the country. The telecommunications industry has been dominated by two vertically integrated firms, which are also expanding their service portfolios to other segments. While vertical integration along the digital value chain could create efficiencies, significant market power could also enable anti-competitive conduct and limit innovation. In the digital age, competitive pressures must be built into the entire value chain by lowering barriers to entry and expansion, removing bottlenecks to innovation, and reducing switching costs. Further analysis of particular segments or specific bottlenecks and anti-competitive practices will be useful in crafting appropriate regulatory approaches.

    Our paper analyzes the causal impact of access to mass media on the adoption of clean cooking fuel in rural India. Using the 78th round of the National Sample Survey of India, we find that overall access to mass media increases the probability of using clean cooking fuel by 32 percentage points and reduces the probability of using dirty cooking fuel by 35 percentage points. To test for causality, we use an instrumental variable technique with two instruments. Our first instrument is the States/UTs-wise circulation of publications per capita, and our second instrument is the States/UTs-wise number of push SMSs sent per capita through the Government of India's Mobile Seva platform. Given the recent drive by the government to disseminate policy-related information digitally, we isolate the impact of digital mass media on the adoption of clean cooking fuel and find that digital mass media positively and significantly impacts adoption of clean cooking fuel. However, this impact is considerably weaker than the unconditional impact of mass media access. This suggests that the adoption of clean cooking fuel is still mostly driven by traditional mass media channels rather than digital ones.

    This study focuses on the most recent development of Chinese overseas investment and construction and of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2019-23, from a project-oriented perspective. As a source we use data of the China Global Investment Tracker (CGIT) of the American Enterprise Institute. Overall annual Chinese overseas commitments are found to have peaked in 2017 (at about USD 250 billion), then to have contracted sharply and to have stabilized from 2021 (at around USD 100 billion). A political blowback against Chinese investments in the West (from 2018), the COVID-19 pandemic (from 2020) and the Ukraine war (from 2022) appear to have affected Chinese project expenditure in Western countries more gravely than in Belt and Road partners. Energy, transportation and metals comprised more than two-thirds of commitments in 2019-23. The twelve largest recipients of Chinese investment and construction in these five years were: Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Australia, the UK, Brazil, the US, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Serbia and Malaysia. As of end-2023, almost one-fifth of total commitments (since 2005) had triggered losses and were thus classified as "troubled transactions." In order to adjust exposure against the backdrop of debt problems, average Chinese overseas projects have become smaller in recent years. Moreover, the share of private Chinese investments has increased to 46%, and greenfield outlays have grown to 53% of total overseas commitments, thus eclipsing acquisitions (in 2023). Apart from the Japanese "Partnership for Quality Infrastructure" program launched in 2015, other most recently (2021-2022) established Western rival infrastructure initiatives to the BRI may still require some time to get off the ground.

    Alors que le marché du livre numérique est encore balbutiant en France et représente moins de 1% du chiffre d'affaires des éditeurs, les stratégies commerciales mises en œuvre par les acteurs traditionnels de la chaîne du livre et par de nouveaux entrants permettent d'esquisser différentes configurations des marchés du livre numérique. La dématérialisation induit des mutations qui auront des conséquences sur l'ensemble de la filière : disparition et apparition d'acteurs, perte, création et déplacement de valeur, restructuration industrielle. Les enjeux de marché, soumis à certaines contraintes techniques comme celle de l'interopérabilité entre normes de fichiers et matériels de lecture, dépendent aussi du maintien ou de l'évolution de la législation régissant le commerce du livre en France : droits de propriété intellectuelle, fiscalité, mode de fixation du prix. Cette photographie cherche à synthétiser les futurs possibles de l'économie du livre numérique. Whilst the market for electronic books (or e-books) is still stuttering into life in France and represents less than 1% of publishers' turnover, the commercial strategies being implemented by both traditional and new players in the book publishing industry are laying the foundations for various possible publishing industry configurations. Dematerialisation is leading to changes which are likely to affect whole industry, e.g. the emergence and the disappearance of various industry players, the loss, creation and transfer of value and industry restructuring. The market faces issues such as technical constraints, i.e. interoperability between file formats and reader hardware. It is also subject to legislative support or change governing the publishing trade in France, covering such matters as intellectual property rights, taxation, price-fixing methods, etc. This snapshot aims to summarise the possible futures of the e-book economy.

    (Auto-)Biografische Darstellungen erfreuen sich seit Jahren einer ungebrochenen Beliebtheit. Die Spannbreite reicht von klassischen Verschriftlichungen in Tagebüchern, Briefen, Autobiografien, Erinnerungen, Romanen, Poesie über visuelle künstlerische Darstellungen in Bild, Fotografie und Film bis hin zu theatralen Bühnenaufführungen oder digitalen Inszenierungen in den neuen Medien. Der vorliegende Band untersucht in Beiträgen aus der Soziologie, den Literatur-, Geschichts-, Kultur- und Medienwissenschaften diese Ausdrucksformen der Selbst- und Fremdreflexionen. Als zentrale Form der gesellschaftlichen Wissens- und Informationsvermittlung und des interaktiven Erfahrungsaustauschs werden sie aus theoretischer, methodologischer und empirischer Perspektive beleuchtet. Dabei ergeben sich zentrale Fragen nach der medialen Modulation und Transformation lebensgeschichtlicher Erfahrungszusammenhänge und deren Rezeptionsformen in verschiedenen Kontexten: Welche medialen Praktiken lassen sich beobachten? Wie verändert die Verwendung (neuer) Medien die Darstellungsmöglichkeiten? In welchem Zusammenhang stehen Medialität und Identität? Wie werden Medien für die öffentliche Darstellung von Lebensgeschichten genutzt?     In the past 20 years, large digital platforms have made many acquisitions, mainly young and innovative startups. Few of them have been reviewed by competition authorities and little is known on their evolution after acquisition. This paper intends to fill in this gap by looking at the development of the technologies owned by the acquired firms. We focus on technologies protected by a patent and we investigate whether an acquisition by a big tech contributes to their development. For this analysis, we use patent citations as a proxy for the innovation effort by the acquirer. Our main result is to show that acquisition increases the innovation effort of the acquirer but only temporarily. After 1.5 year, there is no longer a significant impact of the acquisition on the acquirer’s innovation effort. This decline is relatively larger when the acquired patent belongs to a core technology field of the acquiring firm or to a large patent portfolio. On the contrary, citations by the rest of the industry are not negatively affected by acquisition, which does not corroborate the idea that the acquired technology has reached its maturity.
