The article introduces vicarious writing as a category of literary and cultural analysis that can reframe the study of authorship with respect to this specific form of collaboration. It argues for shifting emphasis from an ongoing privileging of singular authorship and its conceptual legacy of individualism to writing for others as a site where power constellations become operative and particularly salient. Four vignettes of twentieth-century vicarious life writing—"The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas" (1933), "The Babe Ruth Story" (1948), "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" (1965), and "I," "Rigoberta Menchú" (1984)—bring to the fore the manifold motivations and manifest and latent functions that writing for others can have as symbol and matter of literary practice, exposing it as a craft, as a means of cultural authorization, and as a strategy for constituting and positioning authorial subjects in entangled processes of writing. Considering the theoretical implications and historical situatedness of vicarious writing, the author argues that the key issue is not one of identity (“I am an author”) but one of stance-taking (“I position myself / someone else as an author”), highlighting the contractual relations writers and signatories enter to create author figures. The article also pleads for consideration of collaborative dynamics in the academic field that are analogous to the procedures of the literary marketplace.

This article reads Django Unchained as a maroon narrative. It argues that the film’s spatial poetics critique the American symbolic landscapes of the West and the South as well as their cinematic representation. The analysis examines the depiction of the black body and the blending of Western and Southern spaces in an American business master narrative. In this setup, Tarantino’s self-made black cowboy figure is not heroic but remains a cipher in both epistemologies. Django acts as a ghost who haunts the plantation and the frontier in a series of masquerades, thus pointing to the pitfalls of cinema history and national myth-making.

During the last two decades there has not only been a wide range of ever more crises of all sorts; we have also witnessed an inflationary use of the term crisis, and a concomitant proliferation of factual and fictional crisis narratives across various media. The first section of this introduction provides a brief overview of some of the crisis narratives and crisis scenarios that have recently emerged, while also outlining the topic of this special issue. Delineating some of the most important recent developments in interdisciplinary research on this still underresearched topic, section 2 then explores both the concepts of crisis and crisis narratives, and their main recurrent features, highlighting major trends and seminal publications (section 2). As the subtitle already indicates, the focus will be on an exploration of the functions that crisis narratives and the scenarios evoked by them in general (section 3), and literary crisis narratives in particular (section 4), serve to fulfil. This introductory essay concludes by providing a brief overview of the articles that follow as paradigm examples for exploring crisis narratives in literary studies (section 5), and of future perspectives that the recent proliferation of crises might have for research and university teaching (section 6), arguing that literary scholars in general, and narrative theorists in particular could, and arguably should, contribute to a better understanding of the forms and functions of the medial uses of crises by shedding light on crisis narratives and crisis scenarios.

This article explores some of the issues that are of crucial importance for any attempt to come to grips with the logic of the fictions which provided the ideological backbone of British imperialism. After briefly delineating the continuity of the imperial past in the present, section 2 provides a preliminary exploration of the meanings of the term “fictions of empire,” i.e. of the ambiguous title of this essay. Section 3 then provides an attempt to conceptualize the relationship between fiction and reality, and between culture and imperialism, emphasizing the creative or performative role that works of fiction can play in the construction and deconstruction of the ideological fictions of imperialism. Section 4 presents a narratologically informed revison of colonial discourse analysis and post-colonial criticism, which is the the approach that informs this article. Section 5 discusses six of the main functions that both literary and conceptual fictions can fulfill with regard to the making, and unmaking, of imperialist mentalities, while the last section provides a brief conclusion.

Digitization and the digital humanities (DH) continue to shape the field of American studies. This forum brings together ten international scholars who assess where we as (German) Americanists stand on digital scholarship, (inter)disciplinarity, data, and publishing. Some of the statements collected here were originally presented during a digital town hall meeting of the German Association of American Studies (GAAS) on April 1, 2022; others were written specifically for this forum. Together, they discuss how digitization impacts our work environments, the role DH methods play in American studies, and the production, use, and sustainability of research data in the humanities. Contributors define DH and its connection to literary and cultural studies and trace its history in German American studies and beyond. Several contributions shed light on the (in)accessibility of digital publishing and practices of data tracking. They critically flag neoliberal logics of exploitative research designs but also point to collaborative endeavors and open-access formats as useful tools to resist them. The statements reflect and resume the conversation initiated in April 2022 to chart a possible direction for American studies.

From Diogenes to Appiah, Ovid to Shakespeare, from Jacobean to Edwardian England, from gender approaches to revising theories of identity: The Bachelor’s and Master’s theses collected in this volume are concerned with changes in various forms. Some chart the transmutation of a literary idea or motif into a different time or genre, others transfer concepts to new surroundings and test their uses. The papers are not restricted to literary topics but cover a broad range of cultural products and contexts, and they are often complementary: While Kirstin Runge charts the transformation of the Adonis story from Ovid to Shakespeare, discussing the functions of the poem for Shakespeare’s reputation, Anika Droste looks at the practices and representations of violence in Elizabethan and Jacobean England, noting how various Shakespearean plays depict an unstable society by picking up public concerns common to the time. In similar ways, von Blanckenburg’s and Glowsky’s contributions look at nineteenth-century literature, while Schlink and Helm consider various cultural theories in a very modern context. Together, these papers present change from diverse perspectives, political as well as cultural, textual as well as theoretical, and provide the reader with a new insight into literary concepts and ideas throughout the centuries. ; univerlag.uni-goettingen.de/handle/3/978-3-86395-244-0

The nineteenth century holds an important cultural, social, and economic innovation, which we in the twenty-first century take for granted, but which is slipping through our hands: leisure time. In times of the increasing dilution of the boundaries between work and leisure, the beginnings of mass society and the understanding of leisure time and hobbies are all the more important to explore. From these considerations, conclusions can be drawn about the emerging consumer society in Europe and the United States as well as changes in social relations and the public/private sphere. This interdisciplinary conference, Spending Time With/In the Nineteenth Century, brings together young scholars from various fields of the humanities to explore the social, political, and aesthetic implications of the emergence of leisure time in the nineteenth century. We invite them to also think about how we, as scholars, spend time in the nineteenth century and reflect about the possibilities that (digital) scholarship on the century facilitates.
