Tobias Brücker versucht die Frage nach der Werkstatt der Philosophie exemplarisch anhand von Nietzsches 1879 entstandenem Aphorismenbuch Der Wanderer und sein Schatten zu beantworten. Durch den Einbezug aller Manuskripte, Korrespondenzen und Belege wird ein detailliertes Bild vom Entstehungsprozess eines Buches bei Nietzsche gezeichnet. Dabei spielen Notizbücher, Hefte, Schreibzeug, Spaziergänge, Lektüren, Landschaften und Diäten eine wichtige Rolle. Entlang von vier Thematiken wird untersucht, wie das Schreiben und die Philosophie zusammenhängen. Brücker zeigt, dass Nietzsches Buch das Ergebnis eines produktiven Zusammenspiels zwischen der Schreibsituation in St. Moritz und den darauf zurückbezogenen Auffassungen von Schreiben, Denken, Autorschaft und Werk ist.     This article describes and analyzes the methods of Footprints: Jewish Books Through Time and Place, a digital humanities contribution to book history. Footprints collects and aggregates information about the movement of copies of Hebrew books and books of Judaica in other languages printed in the early modern period (roughly corresponding to the hand-press era) and follows evidence of their movement into the twenty-first century. It stores this information in a relational database in which users can run specific queries and delivers the results in a number of visual representations for analysis and interpretation. Footprints undertakes two concurrent and more open-ended aims: (1) the on-going assemblage of a dataset about post-print mobility based on evidence other than the printed text (e.g. marginalia, catalog records, archival letters, other printed texts); and (2) the creation and iterative refining of a scholarly instrument to analyze the dataset through computational methods and modes of representation.

    La période 1760-1850 voit l'émergence, puis le déclin d'un sous-genre nouveau : le récit de voyage excentrique. Ces « anti-récits de voyage » qui se déroulent dans une chambre, dans mes poches, en zigzag... jouent tant avec les codes narratologiques du voyage classique qu'avec sa mise en livre, déployant notamment des extravagances paratextuelles et typographiques qui problématisent la place de l'ouvrage dans un circuit de communication de plus en plus dominé par le paradigme industriel. Si Laurence Sterne, qui lance cette mode avec Tristram Shandy et Le Voyage sentimental, revendique sa célébrité littéraire, pour ses imitateurs Xavier de Maistre et Rodolphe Töpffer il s'agit de maintenir leur automarginalisation dans un champ auctorial de plus en plus sous le signe de la « littérature industrielle » (Sainte-Beuve). Ancrée dans une double tradition de la narratologie française (Lejeune, Genette) et de l'histoire du livre anglo-saxon (Robert Darnton), cette étude retrace le trajet de cet épiphénomène éditorial de ses origines à sa disparition avec le triomphe du paradigme industriel dans la production livresque, mettant ainsi en lumière la métamorphose non seulement d'un genre littéraire, mais du champ auctorial et éditorial dans lequel il s'inscrit. The period 1760-1850 saw the rise and fall of a new sub-genre: eccentric travel writing. A number of anti-travel narratives journeyed round a bedroom, a pocket, or in a zigzag, playing with both the narratological structure and publishing format of mainstream travel writing, particularly by means of paratextual and typographical extravagances that challenged the book's place in an increasingly industrialised communications circuit. Comment des hommes et des femmes parfois à peine rescapés des plantations sudistes sont-ils parvenus à (faire) écrire puis à publier le récit de leur servitude ? À partir d'études de cas portant sur des récits d'esclaves connus - ceux de Frederick Douglass ou Harriet Jacobs - et moins connus, Textes fugitifs met à profit les outils de l'histoire du livre pour éclairer les circonstances de publication, de circulation et de réception de ces textes fondateurs de la tradition littéraire africaine-américaine. Situated at the crossroads of African American studies and the history of the book, Fugitive Texts examines the publication, circulation, and reception of antebellum slave narratives. The story of the slave narrative is well rehearsed: narratives of former slaves, critics say, were usually written in collaboration with white abolitionists, with antislavery societies subsidizing publication; they met with considerable success, going through multiple editions and selling in the tens of thousands; they were largely directed toward a northern white audience; they soon emerged as a distinct genre in antebellum America. None of these statements is fundamentally untrue. The overall picture they paint of antebellum slave narratives is, however, a distorted one. Slave narratives were produced through a variety of authorial economies. Investigating these economies allows to shed new light not only on the slave narrative as a genre, but also on African Americans' print practices at a time when the publishing industry was still emerging and when book trade professionals were reluctant to publish and distribute antislavery literature-at least before Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin came out in 1852.     Reimagining the scholarly book as living and collaborative—not as commodified and essentialized, but in all its dynamic materiality. In this book, Janneke Adema proposes that we reimagine the scholarly book as a living and collaborative project—not as linear, bound, and fixed, but as fluid, remixed, and liquid, a space for experimentation. She presents a series of cutting-edge experiments in arts and humanities book publishing, showcasing the radical new forms that book-based scholarly work might take in the digital age. Adema's proposed alternative futures for the scholarly book go beyond such print-based assumptions as fixity, stability, the single author, originality, and copyright, reaching instead for a dynamic and emergent materiality. Adema suggests ways to unbind the book, describing experiments in scholarly book publishing with new forms of anonymous collaborative authorship, radical open access publishing, and processual, living, and remixed publications, among other practices. She doesn't cast digital as the solution and print as the problem; the problem in scholarly publishing, she argues, is not print itself, but the way print has been commodified and essentialized. Adema explores alternative, more ethical models of authorship; constructs an alternative genealogy of openness; and examines opportunities for intervention in current cultures of knowledge production. Finally, asking why it is that we cut and bind our research together at all, she examines two book publishing projects that experiment with remix and reuse and try to rethink and reperform the book-apparatus by taking responsibility for the cuts they make.

    The variations in the textual history of Jeremiah's Oracles against the Nations have presented scholarship with a perennial puzzle. In addressing these variants, modern scholarship has consistently assumed that one of the versions must be original and the other a revision. In this study, I propose an alternate explanation. Drawing on considerations of material culture, comparative evidence, and insights from the field of book history, I suggest that the Jeremiah traditions existed in the early Persian period as an only partially ordered collection rather than a linear book. Rather than one version being original and the other an editorial rearrangement, both the LXX and the MT represent independent organizations of this collection.

The plaint of an anonymous reader in 1712 sounds with endearing frankness a note of consternation that resonates throughout The Faerie Queene's reception history, from its first known reader, Spenser's friend Gabriel Harvey, who urged him to write anything else instead, to Virginia Woolf, who insisted that if one wants to like the poem, "the first essential is, of course, not to read" it. For more than four centuries critics have sought to counter this strain of readerly resistance, but rather than trying to remedy the frustrations and failures of Spenser's readers, Catherine Nicholson cherishes them as a sensitive barometer of shifts in the culture of reading itself.Indeed, tracking the poem's mixed fortunes in the hands of its bored, baffled, outraged, intoxicated, obsessive, and exhausted readers turns out to be an excellent way of rethinking the past and future prospects of literary study.
