    Lesser Living Creatures examines literary and cultural texts from early modern England in order to understand how people in that era thought about—and with—insect and arachnid life. The conversations in this two-volume set address the collaborative, multigenerational research that produced early modern natural history and provide new insights into the old question of what it means to be human in a world populated by beasts large and small.Volume 2, Concepts, explores ideas that cut across species, insect and otherwise, both building on and invigorating critical vocabularies developed over nearly two decades of early modern animal studies. The contributors explore topics such as the medical and culinary consumption of insects; extermination campaigns; the auditory and emotive effects of a swarm; insects and politics; and notions of infestation, stinging, and creeping. Throughout, they illuminate how early modern science and literature worked as intersecting systems of knowledge production about the natural world and show definitively how insect life was, and remains, intimately entangled with human life.In addition to the editors, contributors to this volume include Lucinda Cole, Frances E.     Die Korrespondenz zwischen körperlichen Merkmalen und dem Charakter eines Menschen, die im 19. Jahrhundert die Matrix für die Naturwissenschaften fungierte, stellt heute die Basis von Lifestyle-Normen oder auch von psychologischer und medizinischer Diagnostik dar. Infolge strukturalistisch-semiotischer Methoden gilt die Physiognomik immer noch als Deutungsdispositiv bei Formen literarischer Personendarstellungen oder philosophischer Deutung menschlichen Antlitzes. In den durch umfangreiche mediale und technische Umwälzungen hervorgebrachten Modellierungen der Sinnlichkeit erweist sich die Physiognomik auch als Paradigma des Enhancements. Der Band untersucht historisch und systematisch die biopolitische Performativität physiognomischer Praktiken der Selbst- und Fremddeutung, ihre Gestaltung sowie ihre Transformationen durch neue Technologien. Er diskutiert ihre materiell-mediale Dynamik, das in der Ästhetik von Texten und Medien implizierte Lebenswissen, Formen der Affektforschung sowie die anthropozentrischen Implikationen der Physiognomik. The correspondence between physical features and the character of a person, which was the matrix for the natural sciences of the 19th century, is today a basis for lifestyle norms, and even for psychological and medical diagnostics. This volume historically and systematically examines the biopolitical performativity of physiognomic practices, their mediality, and the knowledge of life implied in the aesthetics of texts and media.

    Can art heal? Jasmin Degeling pursues this question via a redefinition of Michel Foucault’s concepts of the technologies of the self as well as of care of the self through the lenses of media studies. For that purpose she describes and analyzes the media and aesthetics of Christoph Schlingensief and Elfriede Jelinek as aesthetic therapeutics. The example of the later works of theater, film, and action artist Christoph Schlingensief traces the modern political and aesthetic history of art as a medium of therapeutics, while Elfriede Jelinek’s monumental online novel »Neid (Mein Abfall von allem) – Ein Privatroman« experiments with literary writing in virtual spaces and designs an autobiographical novel that rejects any form of literary subject constitution in a feminist way. The study brings contemporary media of care into view as exercises in healing, health, and survival, and connects them to an archaeology of the aesthetic and media history of modern concepts of health and healing.

Jahrhundert die Matrix für die Naturwissenschaften fungierte, stellt heute die Basis von Lifestyle-Normen oder auch von psychologischer und medizinischer Diagnostik dar. Infolge strukturalistisch-semiotischer Methoden gilt die Physiognomik immer noch als Deutungsdispositiv bei Formen literarischer Personendarstellungen oder philosophischer Deutung menschlichen Antlitzes. In den durch umfangreiche mediale und technische Umwälzungen hervorgebrachten Modellierungen der Sinnlichkeit erweist sich die Physiognomik auch als Paradigma des Enhancements. Der Band untersucht historisch und systematisch die biopolitische Performativität physiognomischer Praktiken der Selbst- und Fremddeutung, ihre Gestaltung sowie ihre Transformationen durch neue Technologien. Er diskutiert ihre materiell-mediale Dynamik, das in der Ästhetik von Texten und Medien implizierte Lebenswissen, Formen der Affektforschung sowie die anthropozentrischen Implikationen der Physiognomik The correspondence between physical features and the character of a person, which was the matrix for the natural sciences of the 19th century, is today a basis for lifestyle norms, and even for psychological and medical diagnostics.
