    Isabella Stewart Gardner’s museum (Fenway Court) owes its distinctive character to the influence of Dante Alighieri. Gardner’s interest in the Italian poet originated in a context of late nineteenth-century Boston’s enthusiasm for his writing and her personal quest for a meaningful life’s work. As a student of Charles Eliot Norton, a member of the Cambridge Dante Society, and a collector of rare editions of The Divine Comedy, Gardner became apprised of issues surrounding literary translation. When she began to study visual images inspired by Dante’s poetry and to acquire European masterpieces, she was poised to conceive a variation on this practice. As a visual translation of Paradiso, Fenway Court was not an illustration of a classic text but rather a conversion of a spiritual idea of love and beauty from one art form to another. In creating a museum for public education and enjoyment, Gardner exemplified Dante’s moral concept of free will and evoked his poetic vision of heavenly beauty.

    The Christian liturgy is far more than a simple mobilization of a diverse range of artistic expressions in service of its ordinary performance; in fact, the liturgy is in essence a poiesis of the faith. Nor does this poiesis function as a system in harmony with Christian dogma and ethics, because in many regards it transcends these other two approaches. In the midst of the contemporary questioning concerning faith and life, believing and living, the centuries-old poiesis represents an invaluable resource. Truth alone cannot be imposed, nor should it be. More than ever, the symbolic translation of the faith, or to put it in other words, its aesthetic mediation, as expressed in its communitarian practice, will prove itself worthy of faith.

    Our ancient ancestors instinctively enacted their stories onto and within walls that resonated with the sound, and reflected the light, of their gatherings. Those of us who care for the liturgical needs of our communities have the same task and, I believe, are instinctively compelled by the same Spirit. We call on all of the senses through every expressive medium we have at our disposal—the arts of color, texture, line, movement, intonation, inflection, crescendo and legato. We curate symbolically-significant occasions and act as prompters for the participation of the people in their ritual art-making. We do it because it is what we have always done, because we can’t not do it, and if we are not doing it, it is because it is being actively suppressed by our own or other's notions about what is “right and good.” The relationship of liturgy and the arts is not primarily a conversation between entities, but an inextricable part of our very anima, our pneuma. The stories handed down to us come alive when we come alive.

    „Mit dem Schönen ist es ganz anders bewandt.“ Aber wie ist es mit ihm bewandt? Das, so Kant, kann allein die Analyse des Urteils, durch das wir Schönheit zusprechen, offenbaren. Den oft steinigen und mit allerlei Fallstricken versehenen Weg dieser Analyse nachzuzeichnen, um zu erkennen, wie Kant zum Begriff der Schönheit als Form der Zweckmäßigkeit ohne Zweck gelangt und was dieser Begriff genau bedeutet, ist nach wie vor sehr lohnend. Allerdings gilt es dabei, Kant gegen sich selbst in Schutz zu nehmen und den Kern seiner Ästhetik von sehr viel Beiwerk zu befreien, das mit der Sache nichts zu tun hat. – In einem Anhang zu dieser Auseinandersetzung mit der Kritik der ästhetischen Urteilskraft wird der enge Zusammenhang zwischen Kants Text und Humes Abhandlung über die „Grundregel des Geschmacks“ aufgezeigt. It is quite different with the beautiful. But what about it, then? According to Kant, this can only be revealed by analyzing the judgment by which we attribute beauty. Tracing the often rocky path of this analysis, fraught with all sorts of pitfalls, in order to see how Kant arrives at the concept of beauty as a form of purposiveness without purpose, and what exactly this concept means, is still very rewarding. However, in doing so, it is important to defend Kant against himself and to rid the core of his aesthetics of a great deal of incidental material that has nothing to do with the matter at hand. – In an appendix to this discussion of the „Critique of Aesthetic Judgment“, the author demostrates the close connection that exists between Kant's text and Hume's treatise „On the Standard of Taste".

    The book of Proverbs concludes with an alphabetic acrostic that describes and praises its feminine subject (Prov 31:10-31). The poem’s praise closes with a generalized critique of beauty, its deceptiveness and short-lived nature (v. 30). What function does this critique of beauty serve in light of the praise of the woman and her deeds? How do the poem and, specifically, this critique of beauty function in the broader organization of the book of Proverbs? This study argues that the poem rejects innate beauty in favor of acquired wisdom, a message that can be found elsewhere in Proverbs. The poem rejects beauty through an appeal to a rhetorical device—the “totalizing description”—which is used elsewhere to argue for a subject’s beauty or perfection. Through the structure of the alphabetic acrostic, the poem carefully embeds its message of willed action and acquired wisdom; using a description of the woman’s successive deeds, the poem shows how each deed leads to the enduring success of the woman’s family, her community, and the subsequent generation.

    In Ezekiel 27, the city of Tyre is depicted as a beautiful ship whose success in trade is the very cause of its demise. As a seafaring vessel, Tyre is laden with goods from the surrounding nations with whom it trades. But a heavy ship in a storm can sink. In Ezekiel 27, weightiness-“glory” ( כבוד )-turns to excess weight, and it is precisely this weightiness that brings about Tyre’s failure on the sea. The presentation of Tyre’s demise is heightened by a preceding praise of its glory. This glory is the city’s beauty, systematically described from end to end, as perfect bodies are in biblical and ancient Near Eastern literature. Ezekiel 27 is thus animated by two simultaneous metaphors: the city as a ship, whose weight determines its viability on the sea, and the city as a body, whose interaction with others determines its success in the world but whose corporeal boundaries must be maintained for health.

    This note uses a unique dataset for Germany which contains interviewer-rated physical appearance assessments of survey respondents both before and after the interview to address three questions. Firstly, after the first impression of an individual's physical appearance, what characteristics make people appear more or less attractive to interviewers? We find that these differ widely by respondent gender. Second, how does this second impression vary by interviewer characteristics? We note differences by interview gender, education and age which has implications for the design of surveys which attempt to abstract "objective" measures of respondent characteristics from interviewers. Lastly, is the first impression of physical appearance most important in determining income or is there also a role for the second impression? Here we find that while it is the first impression which matters, the correlation between interviewer-rated attractiveness and income is higher if it is recorded by somebody of the same gender.

    In der preisgekrönten Arbeit von Larissa Berger mit dem Titel „Kants Philosophie des Schönen“ wird eine Analyse und Rekonstruktion des kantischen Texts „Analytik des Schönen“ entwickelt. Mittels der Methode der kommentarischen Interpretation wird eine sehr textnahe und detaillierte, zugleich aber analytisch-argumentative Interpretation der kantischen Schönheitstheorie entwickelt. Dazu werden Kants Thesen, Definitionen und Argumente klar analysiert und rekonstruiert, sodass die Theorie insgesamt verständlicher und damit auch anschlussfähiger für aktuelle Debatten wird. Das Resultat ist ein umfassender Kommentar, der entweder in Gänze oder als eine Art kommentierendes Nachschlagewerk für einzelne Paragraphen, Begriffe und Thesen genutzt werden kann.

    Research on the economics of beauty has persistently emphasized beauty premiums in the labor market but ignored its influence within existing marriages. We examine the physical appearance of the wives and its influence on several post-marriage family outcomes using a conceptual framework that is widely applicable. Based on two data sets from China, we find beautiful women have at least 0.43 fewer children than average- or plain-looking women when controlling for other factors. The negative effect remains robust controlling for wages and the possible endogeneity of beauty. In terms of mechanisms, the negative impact seems to operate by altering bargaining power within the family and the opportunity cost of having children, but not through the quantity-quality interaction of children. For other outcomes, wives' good looks reduce the probability of their taking care of or tutoring their children and increase the probability of parents or in-laws caring for children or performing household chores in urban areas.

This paper estimates the effect of attractiveness on engagement in risky behaviours in adolescence. We find marked effects across a range of risky behaviours with notable contrasts. More attractive adolescents are more likely to engage in underage drink- ing; while they are less likely to smoke, use drugs, or practice unprotected sex. Investigation into the underlying channels reveals that popularity, self-esteem, and personality attractiveness have roles as mechanisms. Our findings suggest physical attractiveness in adolescence carries long-lasting consequences over the life course.

    This article discussed the question ‘Does God speak through the language of mathematics?’ For centuries, mathematicians with different religious backgrounds would have answered this question in the affirmative. Due to changes in mathematics from the 19th century onwards, this question cannot be answered as easily as it used to be. If one regards mathematical concepts as creations of the human mind, it is difficult to argue that mathematical formulae exist in a divine mind. The article argued that there were traces of the divine in mathematics. Six kinds of traces were explained: (1) the existence of indisputable truth, (2) the existence of beauty, (3) the importance of community, (4) rational speaking about infinity, (5) the discovery that speaking about unseen and abstract objects is reasonable and (6) the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics. In practice, traces (1), (2) and (6) are probably the most convincing. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: This article is very much interdisciplinary as it combines mathematics and theology, especially the philosophy of mathematics and systematic theology.

    Physically attractive individuals experience a range of advantages in adulthood including higher earnings; yet, how attractiveness influences earlier consequential decisions is not well understood. This paper estimates the effect of attractiveness on engagement in risky behaviours in adolescence. We find marked effects across a range of risky behaviours with notable contrasts. Attractive adolescents are more likely to engage in drinking; the gap between attractive and unattractive adolescents in terms of propensity to drink constitutes about one fifth of the baseline mean. In contrast, more attractive adolescents are less likely to smoke, use drugs, or practice unprotected sex. Investigation into the underlying channels reveals that physically attractive adolescents are more popular, have higher self-esteem and personality attractiveness. Popularity leads to a higher likelihood of engagement in "cool" risky behaviours and a lower likelihood for "uncool" behaviours, while self-esteem and personality generally predict a lower likelihood in engaging in all risky behaviours. Our findings suggest physical attractiveness in adolescence carries long-lasting consequences over the life course.

    We investigate the relationship between physical attractiveness and the time people devote to video/computer gaming. Average American teenagers spend 2.6% of their waking hours gaming, while for adults this figure is 2.7%. Using the American Add Health Study, we show that adults who are better-looking have more close friends. Arguably, gaming is costlier for them, and they thus engage in less of it. Physically attractive teens are less likely to engage in gaming at all, whereas unattractive teens who do game spend more time each week on it than other gamers. Attractive adults are also less likely than others to spend any time gaming; and if they do, they spend less time on it than less attractive adults. Using the longitudinal nature of the Add Health Study, we find supportive evidence that these relationships are causal for adults: good looks decrease gaming time, not vice-versa.

    Since the mapping of the human genome in 2004, biologists have demonstrated genetic links to the expression of several income-enhancing physical traits. To illustrate how heredity produces intergenerational economic effects, this study uses one trait, beauty, to infer the extent to which parents' physical characteristics transmit inequality across generations. Analyses of a large-scale longitudinal dataset in the U.S., and a much smaller dataset of Chinese parents and children, show that a one standard-deviation increase in parents' looks is associated with a 0.4 standard-deviation increase in their child's looks. A large data set of U.S. siblings shows a correlation of their beauty consistent with the same expression of their genetic similarity, as does a small sample of billionaire siblings. Coupling these estimates with parameter estimates from the literatures describing the impact of beauty on earnings and the intergenerational elasticity of income suggests that one standard-deviation difference in parents' looks generates a 0.06 standard-deviation difference in their adult child's earnings, which amounts to additional annual earnings in the U.S. of about $2300.
