    A woman is implicated in an assassination and captured on CCTV. Instead of looking for a truth behind the image – is she really guilty? – the writer and curator Shumon Basar dives deeper into the image itself. The kaleidoscopic result of this “paranoid, associative portrait” is the gateway for the authors of this volume to meme Basar’s encounter with the digital image and to unfold what can be recognized as a post-digital image practice.To cut, to split, to reformat, to rearrange, to zoom – these techniques mix up the relation of reality and its representations and show that questions concerning the truthfulness of images under post-digital circumstances come to a dead end. The mimetic status of imagery, the search for the one and only original or false copy becomes an unsolvable quest in a world that is overloaded with images. What the authors of this volume therefore call for is not to neglect the concept of mimesis but to treat it as even more important – though as a dynamic not as a normative, hierarchical ranking tool.

    The first media images of the Earth came into being as a by-product of space travel. Today, we use GPS signals every day and satellite images are part of the toolkit of intelligence officers, scientists, and artists. In addition to looking at the history of this phenomenon, the book also discusses pictures produced at the point of intersection between space travel, digital image culture, remote sensing, and art. The central perspective embraced by art history can generally be said to have disintegrated into a reticular network of scattered focal points, sensors, and perspectives, and there has been an exponential increase in the amount of visual material that exists. Drawing on the iconic short film Powers of Ten (1968/77) by Charles and Ray Eames, Vera Tollmann develops a complex narrative telling the story of imaging processes—from the first images of the Sputnik satellites to today’s Big Data

    Despite a variety of theoretical and practical undertakings, there is no coherent understanding of the concept of scale in digital history and humanities, and its potential is largely unexplored. A clearer picture of the whole spectrum is needed, from large to small, distant to close, global to local, general to specific, macro to micro, and the in-between levels. The variable-scale representation allows for exploratory paths covering areas such as: theoretical and applicative reflections on scale combining a digital dimension with research in history, media studies, cultural heritage, literature, text analysis, and map modelling; creative use of scale in new digital forms of analysis, data organisation, interfaces, and argumentative or artistic expressions.
