    The images of the book of Revelation have always presented interpreters with challenges. How are we to understand these images? What models or comparand a might produce valuable insights into their use? What is accomplished by such strange language? This paper argues that a central aspect of the images has been frequently overlooked in interpretations of the book of Revelation: their visuality. While visual realia and ancient rhetoric have been employed in the service of interpreting Revelation, they have not frequently been used specifically to unravel the riddle of the imagistic language of the book. By interrogating visual comparanda and drawing on ancient discourse on ekphrasis (vivid description), we can begin to grasp the power of John’s images, which was to “present” his audience(s) with a virtual visual reality that subtly countered the imagination of the divine inscribed in the visual culture of the cities of Asia Minor.

    As an introduction to programming for the Digital Humanities (DH), this book presents six key assignments oriented on DH topics. The topics include Computing Change Over Time (calculating burials at a historic cemetery), Visualizing Change Over Time (visualizing the burials at the historic cemetery), Textual Analysis (finding word frequencies and “stop words” in public domain texts), XML Transformation (transforming a simplified version of XML into HTML styled with CSS), Stylometry (comparing the measured features of graphic images), and Social Network Analysis (analyzing extended relationships in historic circles). The book focuses on the practical application of these assignments in the classroom, providing a range of variations for each assignment, which can be selected on the basis of students’ specific programming background and skills; “atomic” assignments, which can be used to give students the experience they need to successfully complete the main assignments; and some common pitfalls and gotchas to manage in the classroom. The book’s chief goals are to introduce novice computer science (CS) students to programming for DH, and to offer them valuable hands-on experience with core programming concepts

    Abstract: This Supplement of Historical Social Research stems from the contributions on the topic of modelling presented at the workshop “Thinking in Practice”, held at Wahn Manor House in Cologne on January 19-20, 2017. With Digital Humanities as starting point, practical examples of model building from different disciplines are considered, with the aim of contributing to the dialogue on modelling from several perspectives. Combined with theoretical considerations, this collection illustrates how the process of modelling is one of coming to know, in which the purpose of each modelling activity and the form in which models are expressed has to be taken into consideration in tandem. The modelling processes presented in this volume belong to specific traditions of scholarly and practical thinking as well as to specific contexts of production and use of models.
