    The influence of fathers on child experiences and outcomes has been given much less attention in international and Irish research than the influence of mothers (Fitzgerald et al., 2020). The Growing Up in Ireland (GUI) study has collected very detailed information from fathers throughout the different waves of the study which can be used to address this gap. This report uses data on the younger GUI cohort, Cohort '08, who were born in 2008 and were nine years of age in 2017. It documents the nature of father-child interaction and the quality of father-child relationships from infancy (nine months) to middle childhood (nine years). Analyses relate to the 4,090 cases where fathers and mothers were both living with the child and where fathers completed the survey at all full waves.1 However, additional analyses are included on the quality of the relationship between children and their non-resident fathers, as reported by the children at nine years. Case numbers did not permit an analysis of households with lone fathers or same-sex couples.

The sight of a father pushing his baby in a pram is no longer rare, and parental leave is no longer for mothers only. Yet parental leave is still not shared equally, despite parents having the right. Nordic fathers only use 10-30 percent of the total leave. State of Nordic Fathers examines why; and identifies possible avenues to increase fathers’ share of childcare and leave. 10 key findings reveal that fathers’ involvement is a key to gender equality and fathers who have taken long leave distinguish themselves in many respects from those who took none. State of Nordic Fathers is based on a survey capturing the attitudes of 7515 men and women, mostly parents, in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, on childcare work, parental leave, masculinity norms, and workplace and family relationships

    Although parents in almost all rich democracies are entitled to some form of paid parenting leave, fathers in particular often do not take all the leave available to them. As employers play an important role in the implementation of parenting leave policies, this article investigates what workplace characteristics influence mothers' and fathers' uptake of their statutory leave entitlements. In Part 1, we combine data from the OECD and the European Labor Force Survey to estimate the size of the "implementation gap" between statutory leave entitlements and leave uptake for mothers and fathers, and compare the size of this gap across countries. In Parts 2 and 3, we review the literature on structural and cultural workplace factors that promote or hinder parenting leave uptake. We conclude the article with suggestions for further research and stress the need for reliable data on the uptake of parenting leave entitlements and research on non-European countries. Obwohl Eltern in fast allen westlichen Industrienationen Anspruch auf Auszeiten nach der Geburt eines Kindes haben, nehmen insbesondere Väter diese Möglichkeiten oftmals nicht oder zumindest nicht vollumfänglich wahr. Da Arbeitgeber*innen eine wichtige Rolle bei der Implementierung von Elternzeitangeboten spielen, geht dieser Beitrag der Frage nach, welche Organisations- und Arbeitsplatzmerkmale die Inanspruchnahme von Elternzeit unter Müttern und Vätern beeinflussen. In Teil 1 des Beitrags kombinieren wir Daten der Europäischen Arbeitskräfteerhebung und der OECD, um das Ausmaß der "Implementierungslücke" bei der Elternzeit von Müttern und Vätern ländervergleichend darzustellen. In Teil 2 und 3 fassen wir die Ergebnisse existierender Forschungsarbeiten zu strukturellen und kulturellen Faktoren zusammen, welche die Inanspruchnahme von Elternzeiten begünstigen oder verhindern. In unseren abschließenden Hinweisen zu bestehenden Forschungsdesideraten stellen wir die Notwendigkeit ländervergleichender Erhebungen zur Inanspruchnahme gesetzlicher Elternzeitangeboten sowie Forschung in nicht-europäischen Ländern heraus.

    Whether and how a paternal health shock cascades across multiple generations to affect descendant health is understudied even though a link between ancestral living conditions and descendant health may constitute an important source of differences in the stock of health capital across families and thus across ethnic, racial and social groups. I study how a paternal health shock affects grandchildren's longevity in a unique setting where the ancestral stressor is the grandfather's ex-POW status in the US Civil War (1861-5) and the children are born after the war. Ancestral stress is associated with longevity after age 45 of male-line grandsons but not of granddaughters or female-line grandchildren. I rule out transmission through socioeconomic channels and direct cultural transmission from grandfather to grandson. An epigenetic explanation is consistent with observed male-line transmission at epigenetically sensitive ancestral ages and mediation by own late gestational conditions. Consistent with epigenetic reprogramming depending on the in-utero environment, the association between the veteran's ex-POW status and that of his male-line descendants declines across generations

    We use a unique data set of linked birth records from Florida to analyze the intergenerational transmission of health at birth by parental gender. We show that both paternal and maternal birth weights significantly predict the child's birth weight, even after accounting for all genetic and environmental factors that are common and time-invariant within a family. Our estimates reveal that a one standard deviation increase in mother's birth weight (535 grams) translates into a 0.13-0.24 standard deviations increase in child's birth weight (70-128 grams), accounting or not for maternal grandmother fixed effects. On the father's side, we find that a one standard deviation increase in father's birth weight (563 grams) translates into a 0.10-0.15 standard deviations increase in child's birth weight (56-78 grams), accounting or not for paternal grandmother fixed effects. The significant role of both maternal and paternal health at birth in explaining offspring health at birth is confirmed when using alternative metrics: intrauterine growth, being small for gestational age or being too heavy (i.e., macrosomic)

    Women earn less than men, and that is especially true of mothers relative to fathers. Much of the widening occurs after family formation when mothers reduce their hours of work. But what happens when the kids grow up? To answer that question, we estimate three earning gaps: the "motherhood penalty," the "price of being female," and the "fatherhood premium." When added together these three produce the "parental gender gap," defined as the difference in income between mothers and fathers. We estimate earnings gaps for two education groups (college graduates and high school graduates who did not complete college) using longitudinal data from the NLSY79 that tracks respondents from their twenties to their fifties. As the children grow up and as women work more hours, the motherhood penalty is greatly reduced, especially for the less-educated group. But fathers manage to expand their relative gains, particularly among college graduates. The parental gender gap in earnings remains substantial for both education groups

    Background: As a response to the spread of the coronavirus in Germany, day care centres and schools closed nationwide, leaving families to grapple with additional child care tasks. In Germany, as in many other societies, women shoulder the lion's share of housework and child care responsibilities. While the gendered division of household labour has shifted in recent years as men have become more engaged in the upbringing of their children, it was hypothesised that the coronavirus crisis may have resulted in a re-traditionalisation of behaviour. This paper examines this hypothesis by analysing how the time fathers spent with their children changed over the course of the coronavirus crisis in the case of Germany. Methods: Data for this investigation come from the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP). The outcome variable is the time spent on child care tasks. We investigate how the time parents spent with their children changed between 2019 and spring 2020, and how these patterns differed by gender, education, and employment situation. As a method, we employ linear panel regressions where the dependent variable is the change in childcare time between the two survey years.Results: We find that fathers and mothers expanded the time they spent on child care to similar degrees between 2019 and spring 2020, which marks the climax of the coronavirus crisis. However, we also observe large differences by level of education. In particular, we find that men with low and medium levels of education spent more time with their children than they did before the onset of the crisis. This finding is at odds with the results of prior studies on fathers' involvement, which showed that highly educated men tend to be the vanguards of paternal involvement. Contribution: Our study provides novel evidence on the effect of the coronavirus crisis on fathers' involvement in child care. Contrary to expectations based on previous research, we find that fathers significantly expanded the time they were spending with their children over the course of the crisis. While we also find that women continue to perform the bulk of child care tasks, our results cast a positive light on the potential of paternal involvement in contemporary societies.

    This paper tests whether mothers and fathers differ in their spending on their daughters relative to their sons. We compare mothers' and fathers' willingness to pay (WTP) for specific goods for their children, diverging from the previous literature's approach of comparing the expenditure effects of mothers' versus fathers' income. Our method, which we apply in Uganda, allows us to estimate gender differences and explore mechanisms with greater precision. A second innovation is that we examine why spending patterns differ between mothers and fathers, e.g., altruism, personal returns to investing in children. We find that fathers have a lower WTP for their daughters' human capital than their sons' human capital, whereas mothers do not. We also find evidence that altruism plays a role in the mother-father differences: fathers' WTP for goods that simply bring joy to their daughters is lower than their WTP for such goods for their sons, but mothers' is not

Fatherhood norms have changed considerably in the Nordic countries over the past decades. The sight of a father pushing his baby in a pram is no longer rare, and parental leave is no longer for mothers only. Yet parental leave is still not shared equally, despite parents having the right. Nordic fathers only use 10-30 percent of the total leave. State of Nordic Fathers examines why; and identifies possible avenues to increase fathers’ share of childcare and leave. 10 key findings reveal that fathers’ involvement is a key to gender equality and fathers who have taken long leave distinguish themselves in many respects from those who took none. State of Nordic Fathers is based on a survey capturing the attitudes of 7515 men and women, mostly parents, in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, on childcare work, parental leave, masculinity norms, and workplace and family relationships

    Männer als Väter befinden sich in einer inkonsistenten Situation. Zum einen haben soziale Veränderungen zu einer Neu-Definition der männlichen Rolle innerhalb der Familie geführt. Väter werden nicht länger ausschließlich als Ernährer konzeptionalisiert; darüber hinaus wird von ihnen ein neues intensives Engagement in der Betreuung und Erziehung ihrer Kinder erwartet und gewünscht. Gleichzeitig gewinnt aufgrund zunehmender Trennungen bzw. Scheidungen von Eltern eine Familienform an Bedeutung, die durch die Abwesenheit des biologischen Vaters gekennzeichnet ist. Beide Entwicklungen - die wachsenden sozio-emotionalen Anforderungen an Väter sowie ihre zunehmende Abwesenheit innerhalb des familialen Haushalts aufgrund der elterlichen Trennung - stehen sich konträr gegenüber. Untersuchungen zu Nachtrennungsvätern zeigen unterschiedliche individuelle Strategien mit dieser Widersprüchlichkeit umzugehen. Nachtrennungsväter, ihre Wahrnehmung und Ausgestaltung der Sorge um ihre getrennt lebenden Kinder in Form von Care und Cash sind Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit. Es stellt sich die Frage, nach der qualitativen und quantitativen Ausgestaltung des sozio-emotionalen Kontakts sowie der finanziellen Unterstützung. Welche Determinanten bestimmen das väterliche Engagement nach der elterlichen Trennung? Zur Beantwortung der forschungsleitenden Frage werden Trennungsväter in verschiedenen Kontexten in den Blick genommen. Die Untersuchung basiert auf der Sekundäranalyse dreier quantitativer Datensätze, die jeweils in Deutschland, Großbritannien und Norwegen entstanden sind. Nach dem Prinzip parallel demonstration of theory werden zunächst basierend auf einem Rational Choice-Modell Hypothesen über mögliche Einflussfaktoren väterlichen Sorgehandelns entwickelt, die in einem zweiten Schritt anhand der nationalen Studien überprüft werden. Die Ergebnisse deuten auf eine recht unterschiedliche Ausgestaltung väterlichen Sorgehandelns Care wie Cash - in deutschen, britischen und norwegischen Nachtrennungsfamilien hin.
