Jez Butterworth is undoubtedly one of the most popular and commercially successful playwrights to have emerged in Britain in the early twenty-first century. This book, only the second so far to have been written on him, argues that the power of his most acclaimed work comes from a reinvigoration of traditional forms of tragedy expressed in a theatricalized working-class language. Butterworth’s most developed tragedies invoke myth and legend as a figurative resistance to the flat and crushing instrumentalism of contemporary British political and economic culture. In doing so they summon older, resonant narratives which are both popular and high-cultural in order to address present cultural crises in a language and in a form which possess wide appeal. Tracing the development of Butterworth’s work chronologically from Mojo (1995) to The Ferryman (2017), each chapter offers detailed critical readings of a single play, exploring how myth and legend become significant in a variety of ways to Butterworth’s presentation of cultural and personal crisis.

‘A deft, rigorous and thrilling analysis of dreams and sleep in Shakespeare’s drama, informed by a unique interdisciplinary focus. This book is a veritable cabinet of wonders which opens up early modern cultures of dreaming in new and exciting ways. This marvellous study both refreshes and redefines its field.’ Chris Laoutaris, Lecturer at the University of Birmingham’s Shakespeare Institute, Stratford-upon-Avon, UK, and author of Shakespeare and the Countess: The Battle that Gave Birth to the Globe ‘This thoughtful and well-written book makes especially good use of the dream interpretation books of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries and connects Shakespeare’s work to much other Renaissance drama. Much of the value of the book is the way the author examines and analyzes the classical influences on Shakespeare’s work. Fretz’s knowledge of classical literature is remarkable.’ Carole Levin, Willa Cather Professor of History and Director of the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA Dreams, Sleep, and Shakespeare’s Genres explores how Shakespeare uses images of dreams and sleep to define his dramatic worlds. Surveying Shakespeare’s comedies, tragedies, histories, and late plays, it argues that Shakespeare systematically exploits early modern physiological, religious, and political understandings of dreams and sleep in order to reshape conventions of dramatic genre and to experiment with dream-inspired plots. The book discusses the significance of dreams and sleep in early modern culture, and explores the dramatic opportunities that this offered to Shakespeare and his contemporaries. It also offers new insights into how Shakespeare adapted earlier literary models of dreams and sleep – including those found in classical drama, in medieval dream visions, and in native English dramatic traditions. The book appeals to academics, students, teachers, and practitioners in the fields of literature, drama, and cultural history, as well as to general readers interested in Shakespeare’s works and their cultural context

“Rautzenberg considers games, play and gaming as core ingredients of Performance Philosophy today. The author deploys a large variety of perspectives in order to discover the types of knowledge encapsuled in games. Furthermore, Framing Uncertainty is an inventory of the confused state of actual discourse in game studies and unravels the intricate ramifications of these cultural objects. Any avid student of ludology benefits from the profound insights into the various fields of immersive worldbuilding the book offers.” - Dr. Andreas Wolfsteiner, University of Hildesheim, Germany "A philosopher by training, a gamer by passion and a media scholar and cultural scientist by intensive reading and writing, Markus Rautzenberg is one of the key figures of contemporary German academia. His work on the theory of signs, the non-visual impact of images, disruptions and disturbances, and his sharp analysis of specific games and game genres influenced a whole generation of scholars. Current discourse on presentism, the aesthetics of games, AI, automation of play and more general epistemological questions all draw from his oeuvre.“ - Prof. Dr. Mathias Fuchs, Leuphana University Germany, Artist, Computer Scientist, Media Studies “Standing in a universalist tradition, Markus Rautzenberg bridges gaps of thought and juggles with ease between critical theory, postmodern philosophy, psychoanalysis, as well as game and media studies. His philosophical concepts connect usually separate disciplines, ranging from anthropology and psychology over media theory and far beyond. This collection of articles is a perfect guide through the all-encompassing postmodern uncertainty, leaving the reader with one certainty: That when it comes to games, markets, futures and the human condition, there is nothing to be certain about, and that this is a good thing.“ - Dr. Anne Dippel, University of Jena, Humboldt University Berlin, Anthropology, Literary Studies The book provides (1) an introduction to a continental approach to game philosophy; (2) an aesthetic theory of computer games rooted in concepts of performativity and epistemology; and (3) an introduction to an interdisciplinary approach to game studies that is based on philosophical perspectives on the subject matter. Markus Rautzenberg is Professor of Philosophy at Folkwang University of the Arts, Essen, Germany

Maternal Representations in Twenty-First Century Broadway Musicals: Stage Mothers analyzes Broadway productions within the context of their presentation and assessment of motherhood and the variety of roles for mother figures. Using a frame of feminist and psychoanalytical positions, Gina MacKenzie establishes, defines, and interprets mother figures in contemporary Broadway, according to original categorizations of the absent, inconsequential, and overbearing mothers. MacKenzie considers how and why commercial representation of mother figures are limited and predominantly negative, even as fiction, poetry, and other forms of drama offer a much wider and progressive view of the varieties of motherhood possible in society, asserting the need for greater representation of mother figures in commercial musical theatre today.

In the Shakespeare aftermath—where all things Shakespearean are available for reassembly and reenactment—experimental transactions with Shakespeare become consequential events in their own right, informed by technologies of performance and display that defy conventional staging and filmic practices. Reenactment signifies here both an undoing and a redoing, above all a doing differently of what otherwise continues to be enacted as the same. Rooted in the modernist avant-garde, this revisionary approach to models of the past is advanced by theater artists and filmmakers whose number includes Romeo Castellucci, Annie Dorsen, Peter Greenaway, Thomas Ostermeier, Ivo van Hove, and New York’s Wooster Group, among others. Although the intermedial turn taken by such artists heralds a virtual future, this book demonstrates that embodiment—in more diverse forms than ever before—continues to exert expressive force in Shakespearean reproduction’s turning world

This is the first book-length analysis of Shakespeare s depiction of specula (mirrors) to reveal the literal and allegorical functions of mirrors in the playwright s art and thought. Adding a new dimension to the plays Troilus and Cressida, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Hamlet, King Henry the Fifth, Love s Labor s Lost, A Midsummer Night s Dream, and All s Well That Ends Well, Maurice A. Hunt also references mirrors in a wide range of external sources, from the Bible to demonic practices. Looking at the concept of speculation through its multiple meanings - cognitive, philosophical, hypothetical, and provisional - this original reading suggests Shakespeare as a craftsman so prescient and careful in his art that he was able to criticize the queen and a former patron with such impunity that he could still live as a gentleman

This is a book about what becomes of the truth when it succumbs to generational memory loss and to the fictions that intervene to cause and fill the gaps. It is a book about the impossibility of writing an autobiography when there is a prepossessing cultural and familial 'we' interfering with the 'I' and an 'I' that does not know itself as a self, except metastatically — as people and characters it has played but not actually been. A highly original combination of close readings and performative autobiography, this book takes performance philosophy to an alternative next step, by having its ideas read back to it by experience, and through assorted fictions. It is a philosophical thought experiment in uncertainty whose literary, theatrical, and cinematic trappings illustrate and finally become what this uncertainty is, the thought experiment having become the life that was, that came before, and that outlives the 'I am'
