The significance of the conference held in Madurai between 4.1. - 10.1.1981 to strengthen the cultural identity of the Tamils. Centuries-old tradition of Tamil scholarship. The situation in the area of Tamil literary, cultural and historical studies. Determination of the Tamils to prove to themselves and to others that their linguistic and cultural heritage compares favourably with the great civilizations of world history. (DÜI-Sen) + The spirit of Tamil nationalism which ran as a strong undercurrent in the atmosphere of the conference (Jan. 1981) was manifested in the agenda of scholarly activities and in many speeches, exhibits and performances. In hindsight this grand-scale "cultural performance" bears eloquent testimony both to the strong feeling of pride Tamils feel for their language and culture and to their painful awareness that in the global community Tamil culture has not been orded the recognition they believe it deserves.
